Official 'Smoking Turbo' response from Mazda

Spoke with my SM this morning after I'm having some turbo issues...PCV fix is postponed again, pending more R&D. This is at least another 90 days out.

Does this mean we can all stop paying our car payments until they get it fixed? Sorry, I'm feeling a little sarcastic this morning.

I wish. I'm thinking my time with turbos may be coming to an end, and I may start a new chapter here soon...

new turbo on the way from mazda for me. no word of the pcv system they initially mentioned. ?? anyway, i'll post my replacement stats here soon. :P

I've had the 5w-40 replacement and now I'm smoking again. I read over at the CX7 forums that the fix should be out in Novemeber - December. Also the 5w-40 seems to wear out faster than the 5w30 the car is rated for. May be that my turbo seals are leaking and mudding up the oil? We'll see. Going to call and bring the car back in.

Hmm, that's odd. I've also heard the fix was pushed back, at least another 90 days. My esitmates had the first prediction to be right around this time, and now I expect it to be late Dec.

I don't think the 5w-40 is wearing out any faster. If anything, it should break down slower than the 5w-30, and help to prevent fuel shear.

Can you post a link to the CX-7 info you have?

I just wanted to share my smoke experience w/ you all.I tried 5w-40 sythetic and run at 3000rpm for 15min and it still smoked.I heard 10w-40 conventional was it,still smoke.cobb catch can setup, still smoke.pt performance part, still smoke.and also tried turning the idle up,still smoke.I hope mazda's pcv valve update is the answer! Just called yesterday not avail. yet...

I thought you were only supposed to run at 3000 RPM for 1 min? Thats been what I have been doing and before I got the 5w40 synth swap it made the car smoke every time. 15 minutes seems like a long time to be sitting idle revving. I'm not a mechanic or anything but seems like something would make a car smoke regardless of internal issues.

just got my car back with the new turbo. got my cat on, so cant tell if its smoking yet. seems to run well. now time to put my bpv and RP back on and cross my fingers! quite pleased with my dealership.

there's no reason for a car to smoke after idling for extended periods of time (like 15 minutes) unless there's a problem.

As I posted in another thread, the free exhaust shouldn't be an issue. Mazda claims that the C revision of the turbo has an improved design of the seals that would counter oil leakage if the back pressure on the exhaust side of the turbo was removed/reduced.

Which company did you order from and what parts are you testing?

Do some MS6's come with this fix?? if so how could i find out if mine does or doesnt?

.. that didnt work out.. tuner steve.. that was for you idn why the quote thing got messed up.

Fixed it, just click the 'quote' button on a post, and if you're copying from another thread just cut & paste it.

No, unfortunately all MS6's were equipped with the older turbos and as far as I know, all DISI motors have the 'inadequate' PCV system. The PTP fix seems to have mixed results, and other than that, the secondary PCV and catch can works for others as well. I've personally decided to just wait it out for the Mazda PCV fix, and see if that does the job. I'm not smoking with the new turbo, and I'm still running the 5w-40 Amsoil and will continue to do so.

im still running stock.. i have no smoke at all im just curious incase the STS comes about in my car.

If it smokes, don't hesitate to take it in and have them replace it. The revised turbo seems to curb the smoke for most people.

Hi Guys – just had my DP done to 3” car (MS3 2008 model) started smoking this weekend, badly.... Would you say that I should rather go back to 2.5” DP and get the Turbo sorted out with Mazda? I read the Thread and understand the PCV issue and changing the oil, just want to know if the 3” pipe is harder on the seals than a 2.5” pipe? My apologies if I sound ignorant and this might have been mentioned somewhere else?

there are some people who believe that the reduced back pressure resulting from the 3" system contributes to the smoking problem. They say that the back pressure in the 2.5" system helped offset the pressure in the turbo that causes oil to leak past the seals, reducing the amount of leakage...

No one's offered any actual proof that I've seen though... So for now it's just conjecture...
