Official 'Smoking Turbo' response from Mazda

Damn that sucks. My VIN and production date fit in there. Nice to know I have a ticking time bomb.

What about all the people with modded cars? the dealerships certainly won't honor warranties on theirs.
+1

what if your done with warranty?? will they still consider repairing those??

From what I understand its not just the valve. It's the entire system to release the crankcase pressure while at idle. Just a new PCV wont fix it.

Yeah, the rumors I've heard potentially include a new valve cover design or something of that nature.

before you say this, since it looks to me like you own a protege, not an ms3, go look at an actual ms3 and study its pcv system, look at all the oil and crap inside the motor when its apart, and you will find flaws. there are oiling issues as well. its alot farther than a simple $20 pcv valve my friend. have you looked at the valves and head from a ms3? s**** dirrrrty.

Has anyone actually brought this TSB to a dealership and had them honor it? I am taking mine in next week. I brought it in for the smoke issue before and they couldn't replicate the problem and told me basically I was SOL and if it wasn't something that was happening all the time then I "shouldn't worry about it". The dealership I am taking it to should already have the previous service records and the only thing I am worried about now is the authenticity of this TSB as there is no TSB number listed.

Priceless info.

I was sitting in traffic in Washington, DC, this afternoon, idling for 10 or 15 minutes at a time. I happened to glance up at my rear view mirror to see gray/white smoke coming out of my exhaust (2008 Mazdaspeed 3, with 10,000 miles on the odometer).

Drove for a bit; smoke disappeared.

Hit heavy traffic again, sitting at idle, and there it was again.

This happened three times. Called the dealer and he immediately mentioned the necessity of swapping to synthetic oil to see if that fixed the problem and, if it did not, getting an OK from Mazda to replace the turbo.

The car goes in Mondayl

I work in DC as well and the same thing happened to me on my drive home
from work. I am taking my car in on Tuesday. Where are you taking yours? I'm going to castle ford Mazda mitsubishi. Glad they are honoring the TSB.
I think 40 switch is a temporary patch

This is going to be a bit annoying for the people who only get the smoke on non stock exhausts, assuming Mazda won't do the fix with exhaust mods.

My dealer is Brown's Mazda, in Fairfax. I'll report back what happens on Monday when I take my car in.

My service guy said that if I see the smoke in the meantime, photograph it. That's not going to be easy, photographing blue/white smoke on a sunny day, but I'll try to do so if it happens again. Think I'll try it first in color then in black and white; I suspect black and white might do better.

I just emailed the service manager asking if this was available and what the part #s were to replace it.

Just got a message from my service manager, who talked to his District Service Manager, who called the District Field Engineer, and basically, they don't know of any fix available yet for the smoking turbo...

Sooooo.... not sure about what the guys who said they got the fix got, but it's definitely not a widespread solution yet - if it is one...
