Official 'Smoking Turbo' response from Mazda

eh who cares, 5w40 is better for the motor anyways.
QFT

this oil is specified for the MPS 3/MPS 6/CX-7 in australia and europe anyway
I don't go to their boards but you don't hear anyone from there complaining here about smoking issues much either... but bottom line is, its specified there because it is what the engineers feel best at protecting the engine and not having to compromise for some stupid EPA CAFE standard

I just switched back to 5w-40...I really need to get a copy of the EUDM/JDM owners manual fluid recommendation page to prove this.

What about an oil catch can? would that help?

From what I've seen, those running the OCC have seen an improvement/reduction in smoking. It certainly won't hurt. Usually, they install it with a second PCV valve, per the Cobb procedure outlined on their website.

This is awesome. 47,000 of horrific abuse, Turbo back exhaust for thirty thou and now i get oil smoke at warmup idle on occasion. I have been in communication wth the company that claims to fix the issue that the free flowing exhaust causes. I also have ordered a couple of parts besides the fix. Just because. i will report up.i plan to install asap. These folks have explained themselves fairly well so it is worth a shot. If it turns out the Turbo seals have deteriorated i will probably step into a ball bearing unit finally. MATX, i see you are new to the forum. Welcome. This discussion has been gone over alot. If you search you might find some useful/ or not, threads about catch cans on the Speeds. so you may not get alot of responses, it is kinda worn out. Some folks think Mazda might admit it is a design issue, some feel its is the free exhaust, some the type of turbo. Mine made it this far with out much smoke. But my mods are way beyond warranty. So i will try this fix it. If you have oil smoke already, go right to the dealership. When did you get your car?

As I posted in another thread, the free exhaust shouldn't be an issue. Mazda claims that the C revision of the turbo has an improved design of the seals that would counter oil leakage if the back pressure on the exhaust side of the turbo was removed/reduced.

Which company did you order from and what parts are you testing?

I have purchased a piece to try it out just to see what is up and will it correct an issue with my Corksport TBE that just started to show itself. I have pm'd you. I hope you do not mind. I am glad to hear they have resolved it ( Mazda ) But i do not see myself using my warranty any more. I will get back to this when i install the piece and know more. I am using RP 10-30 and have been for about twenty thou. I store the car in the cold weather.

Who said Mazda resolved it? To my knowledge, there still hasn't been a permanent solution from Mazda for the smoking turbo problem...

No, there's not yet. The PTP fix is the solution that most people are trying now, or the second PCV with a catch can.

Maybe i mispoke. Addressed it maybe would be better worded. If Mazda made changes to repair an issue maybe admit would be a word i should use.

perhaps you should go to the australian or UK board and ask them to scan the page and then post it here? :)

Don't know about the others, but euro CX-7 recommends 5w-30. I asked people form a Ukrainian forum to scan a copy of a page from the official european CX-7 manual where oil is specified. It is in Russian, but one can clearly see 5w-30 as the oil type there as well:( And they do complain about smoking on both official European CX-7 cars and "gray market" American CX-7cars at about the same level.

Although other countries aren't recommending it (at least none I can find yet), running 5w-40 will help. If you think you're car is going to smoke, I'd switch and see how it holds up after.

I did the install myself, they have very clear instructions and it is not that hard. i am not ready to say it is THE fix yet. It has been mentioned that there is another one available. Do not give up yet!

I had a V1 fix, which didn't do much of anything, so I pulled it out. If you're smoking, it might be worth a shot, but I wouldn't call it anything of a preventative fix whatsoever.

My MS3 was suffering from the "Smoking Turbo Syndrome"(STS). As per the MTOL-5505information, I had the the oil changed with Mobil-1 5W40 and replaced the oil filter. I did the test as specified by the TSB and I'm happy to report the 'STS' has ceased. I repeated the test several times and she passed with flying colors. I have only driven about 40 miles up this point, but it looks pretty good. Thanks for the info.
