I got 42 miles per gallon this weekend

Drove from Atlanta to Lake Oconee and back this weekend. Stayed below 3000 so as not to engage the turbo and kept around 60 mph. I had a 200 lb passenger.

I got 41.997 mpg. Pretty amazing! My last trip there I got 39 mpg. driving the same speed.

I know some of you are going to scoff at this but I've made this drive twice and I've gotten pretty much the same results.

Has anybody else had these resluts?

By the way, around town I only get around 20 mpg.

2008.5 sport.

Yeah, I got better than that, I drove off a cliff with a back seat full of RESLUTS (damn I hate those nasty ho's) . . . J/K

According to my Dashhawk, I get 99.9MPG when coasting in neutral.

LOL, I just got my Dashhawk, and have seen the same... for about half a second, it's really nifty. I'm still learning the ins & outs of the Dashhawk, but I noticed that there's a correction factor you can use to adjust the mileage calculations. Looks like I need to use it, too, because on a road trip this weekend, I got just shy of 28mpg, but the Dashhawk was constantly reading 18-20, even while crusing at 75mph.

I've got my correction factor on +40% or something around there. It seems pretty dead-on now. I tried -40%, and it was telling me I was getting 50+ MPG! I don't think Mazda's engineering is quite that brilliant yet.

it is a sin to worry about mileage in a MS3. I had a friend that worry'd about mileage in his MS3 and one day he started to recycle toilet paper! eeewwww.

It sounds concievable to me. There are many factors that play into the mileage that could have been right for you. The fact that you were only going 60 makes a huge difference. Wind resistance being an exponential function, a 5 mph difference in cruising speed can make a big difference too.

My dad and I averaged 38.5 mpg on our way to Ann Arbor, MI in an 86 BMW 325. A 6 cylinder got better mileage than my Protege.

Think about it. You're cruising at X mph, your engine is spinning 800 rpm. The mileage is probably even higher than that. The engine is only using the gas needed to idle, not the gas needed to keep the car at speed at 3000 rpm under load.

Yea. 99.9 is probably the highest it'll read.

And I really don't stress gas mileage on my MS3 that much. If I can hammer on it and get 20MPG, I'm happy :)

I got my Dashhawk second hand & the correction factor was set to +50. Today, I set it back to Zero, and it seems to be only slightly high now. (Compared to way low before) I'll tweak it some more over time.

But I didn't buy this car to save gas. I bought it for the fun factor per dollar spent.

but its alway nice knowing its good on gas if u behave =D

In my car, I've been getting 31 mpg, calculated using mileage traveled divided by fuel used.

I thought these speeds weren't supposed to get such fantastic MPG?? (Guess the EPA screwed up yet again??)

I think too many people drive it "properly" to get the stellar mileage they're capable of. hahaha.

You seriously have to baby it to get those miles though. I drive 60 miles round trip all freeway to work and have a hard time getting over 28 MPG, I have tried to do better!!!

But I'm not really babying it that much. I did one run up to 100 mph, but I shift low (around 2500 rpm), plus, I'm going like 70 mph most of the time on the highway.

From what I understand the new MPG ratings are supposed to be more "real world" numbers. Since few people actually drive conservatively, I guess they figured this did not make the average and used more aggressive driving styles.

That said, I've heard the turbo starts between 2500-3000rpm. When I bought the car I wanted to know what kind of mileage I could expect so I babied it a bit, (under 1000RPM launch, shift @ 2500RPM).
Combine this with some on ramp fun and I get; [Average 27MPG, (math)], [best 36MPG@40MPH 32MPG@60MPH, (trip comp)].
Mazda's are not known for the stellar MPG, so I love that we can almost get the mileage of an accord, haul a table and chairs, and still Booooooossssssst to 155!! (2thumbs)
