What 5W30 oil brand do you use in your CX-9?

In USA, the lable is pre paid with Blackstone already. It's already accounted for during the price of testing. They send it to you for free, until you send it back.

You happen to test your atf too? I did one sample at a 90k I think only.

No, didn't think to. No idea what i'd even do with the info?! Would be cool to have the record of it though. i would only ever use the Mazda fluid anyway, so wouldn't really change anything.

I did it since I owned multiple Mazda. I wanted to see how good their "Lifetime" was. Turns out at 90k, the results told me to push it to 120k and come back. I used that data and adjusted my fluids replacement cycle. First round at 100k, next one at 200k ish.

So you didn't change your ATF fluid until 100k?
Correct, my cx 5 I did at 80k I think. Using that data, I did my cx 9 at 100k with oem. At 200k, I'll might use non oem from Rock Auto. Or go cheaper with Asian blend from Castro.

Very surprised you didn't have issues waiting that long.

This guy claims his transmission is "fine" after 400,000 miles without ever servicing the transmission. Obviously, don't ever do this, but it is a testament to the extreme reliability of these units. The guy thinks these transmissions are "sealed."

Fine, maybe. Drive horrible most likely. My car feels so nice after atf or oil change for sure.

I wonder what gave him the confidence, at 100K miles, to say no transmission service, and again and again at 200K, 300K, and 400K miles. Most people don't expect 400K from anything that is supposedly a "closed system" and "lifetime." 😅 He seems educated and diligent about other aspects of the car.

I knew someone who swore by the reliability of Camry. She said the tank would be empty to the point she could hear a ticking sound, but it would keep going. 😬

My CX-3 is NOT built to extreme reliability. The ATF was first refreshed at 153K miles because of my mistake, I thought I had it done at 60K along with diff oil and transfer case oil. Shifting became sluggish until the fluid was refreshed and shifting pattern was reset. It shifts fine now but I considered myself lucky, not that the car is abuse-proof.

Then you have people finding junk in their 20k mile Skyactiv transmission which justifies an early first change. Just like engine oil, only worse.

Ya i think some Kia or Toyota has a recall on something. Since shaving gave issue and screw with transmission. If you can afford it, do it sooner. Reading into that issue, if I own a new car. I'll probably do it at 30k, then 100k.

I ran PUP on my 2018 for the first like 30k kms, then switched to Kirkland and I've been running it to 137k kms, when I traded it in. I have enough oil to do one more OCI on Kirkland for my 2022, but I think I may just keep that oil for an emergency and switch back to PUP if I can catch a sale. It's tough paying $43 CDN for PUP when I can get 9.5L of Kirkland oil for basically the same price, but maybe it'll be worth it?

I'm definitely on team "over-maintenance", but I think there's something to be said about not having hacks mess with your stuff and introduce problems.

Half the videos on youtube doing Mazda ATF changes are checking the fluid with the car turned off.
This exact scenario happened to me this year. Picked up a cheap truck that used to be a commercial vehicle. Ton of maintenance records, etc. It would squeal in the morning for the first 20-30 feet, and when i'd leave from work. Thought it was just a worn u-joint on the driveshaft.. Well unrelated, I decided to freshen up the transmission fluid and it was almost 3L down. Guarantee you someone filled it until it came out the level check, but with the car off and not circulating through the system.. It must have had just enough fluid to make it work, and not totally grenade itself. Squeal gone, and shifting perfect.

Due to Nissan horrible cvt issue. At least they got a easy enough fluid change setup. In their vehicles exist two plugs. One to drain, and one to "full up to". You basically fill until it start to pour out on top plug. Top plug I'm talking about isn't the place you fill it in at. Really like that system.

Other companies "close loop / seal" system is basically the two lower ports.

I was looking at the local walmart recently. THey had the new type of Valvoline RESTORE for about $30, and Pennzoil Platinum for about $26, but not the Ultra Platinum. I think they had the more premium Mobil 1 (EP).
The Pennzoil Ultra Platinum is 'rated' for more miles, but has the same GF-6 specification, I don't know how much difference there is between the two.
