Toyota, Honda, and Subaru all use high moly oil for their 0w-20 factory fills. I think it's the same Idemitsu oil for all of them. The 0w-16 and 0w-8 Toyota now specs are also very high in molyI think the high moly gig is over rated...I'm betting they only specced the high moly as the 0-20 was so thin that it needed everything thrown in it to actually lube the motor....no such issues for the 5-30 so moly is not a required factor
On my first oil change I didnt use the recommended 0w20 for my skyactive , 2025 CX5, NON turbo either.. i used 5w30 and used Pennzoil Ultra Platinum. I expected the engine to be quieter, but i think its actually louder. Bearing in mind that skyactivs are known for their loudness, I was going to switch to mobil 1 like you.. but ive heard the opposite of what your saying. Multiple people say Mobil 1 is a good oil but definitely makes engines louder.Mine sounded like that when I used Pennzoil Platinum.
Engine got quieter when I switched to Mobile 1 EP. Waayyyy quieter.
One word, acronym rather: C.A.F.E.Wanted to also add to this thread, although its been up a while. That nobody here is mentioning the possibility (I say possibility because i dont know if its true) that mazda programs engines or oil pumps (Variable?) DIFFERENTLY when bound for the U.S., Candada, hence, ONE of the reasons for the recommended 0w-20..along WITH cafe requirements (even saw the Car care nut do a video on this regarding toyotas) curious what folks here think about that. I made a separate thread about this as well, just trying to get different opinions about it. Some say that the CX5 does NOT even have an electronically controlled variable oil pump so its a non issue, others are saying that could be true but its still only about the fuel economy and nothing to do with viscocity recommendations, so go ahead and use 5w30... I have a 2025 NA skyactive non turbo.. ..
Was wondering.....Mazda recommends Castrol brand. Is the warranty voided if engine problems occur when using a brand other than Castrol? On my first oil change I didnt use the recommended 0w20 for my skyactive , 2025 CX5, NON turbo either.. i used 5w30 and used Pennzoil Ultra Platinum. That was a long time ago. There is no specific brand recommended now. Just make sure it meets the latest specs (API SP, ILSAC GF-6, soon GF-7).Was wondering.....Mazda recommends Castrol brand. Is the warranty voided if engine problems occur when using a brand other than Castrol?
Right, oil pumps are mechanical, at least for the 2016 year that I know of. Nothing programmed there.I don't know how programming would affect anything. The computer controls ignition timing, variable valve timing, injector duty cycle, things like that. Think air, fuel, spark. Everything your oil interfaces with is mechanical in nature and set with physical tolerances. Think crank bearings, piston rings, timing chain, valve lifters.
When OEMs mention another specific brand in the manual, that's just a marketing thing. Castrol paid Mazda for the placementWas wondering.....Mazda recommends Castrol brand. Is the warranty voided if engine problems occur when using a brand other than Castrol?
The CX-5 at least from 2017 has variable oil. There is also oil valve stuck at the block if I recall. Whether it can take any oil (beside 0w20 and 5w30) I don't know.Right, oil pumps are mechanical, at least for the 2016 year that I know of. Nothing programmed there.
