Winter FI/Engine projects?

blkzoomzoo i will be the one blowing it up at the track since i am going to run 25 psi at a race aginat my but in a overly built 72 pickup .... once it is blown i will put my new engine in but oh ya ..... i am the not cool turbo'd es guy....... because i go show also.........

your gonna blow pretz's car? I have a hard time following that.

no i am going to blow my motor this winter.........it is planned...... at a laid out strip that is not official....... sorry for any confusion..... the video should be fun though

lol. Yeah thats what I did, minus the video. It kinda sucked cause I took out the starter and other stuff though.

ya i hope not to do that but if it happens oh well.... plus video in car and out of car it will be fun.......

Piston coating?

Hey guys, not to thread jack, but has anyone thought about ceramic coating the top of the piston (and maybe the valves too)? Just wondered if anyone had tried that to gain a little hp.

A couple of the race teams do it. It's been mentioned too. There is some benefit to it, but I know I'm not doing it because I don't want to add the extra cost or so forth with it. It's also one more step that could delay me and I'm trying to keep on schedule!

Heres something sort of bothersome about coating pistons that I found on JetHot's Australian site:

Internal Engine Coating Disclaimer:
Piston manufactures use all kinds of metal and other elements in combinations of metals alloys in the production of pistons. When the coating is applied, the pistons are subjected to re-heating. This re-heating may alter the structure of the metal. When JET-HOT receive pistons we are unable to identify the alloys that may be more susceptible to this phenomenon. The coating application system used to apply the coating demands the piston be re-heated over the critical temperature that this phenomenon may occur. Therefore JET-HOT make no claim that a set of pistons will not suffer from this phenomenon and fore warn all customers.
Piston coating is a risky business JET-HOT take all care and caution when applying the coating endeavouring not to cause any changes in the piston.
When a customer has agreed to coat pistons they have entered into an agreement with JET-HOT knowing that there is a risk involved in coating pistons and that neither party has assigned any claims or obligations. Internal Engine Component are Guaranteed at the point of consumer sale against workmanship and coating defects only.

Just fyi.

I wouldn't ceramic coat the faces of pistons... though dry film to the skirts is in my plans.

the reason to not ceramic coat the piston faces is because in long term use (street driving) the ceramic can flake off, get inbetween the valve and seat, go into the turbo, etc. see, forged pistons expand and contract a lot more than stock cast ones, making this even more likely. for race its great.. but hey, they rebuild after every race/pass

read up on dry film coating though, its great for bearings and piston skirts.

I was warned against the thermal coatings also.

I heard mixed. Some swore by them, other's swore them off. Some claimed the coating expanded enough that flaking was a problem... dunno.. not gonna worry about it! :)

Hey i am trying to start a winter project but i need to get a BARE BLOCK...anyone know of where to find one...been searching this site for a month now and no one has any listed...anyone that can help me out will be greatly appreciated

My winter project involves taking my car back from the inconsistancies that haunt it. This week will be the week for fixing s*** like o2 sensors, and Exhaust/CAT issues. Then the MAM FMIC will go on, and then the dents that a certain someone put in my car will be fixed.

If you cant find one on the forum, try car-part.com. I think a few of the guys on here have gotten their block from there.

Has anyone thought about a nikasil coating at all? Doesn't present much pefrmance gain, but it extends piston life... Also has anybody cryo treated internals, i think from what i've seen, i might go that route next winter when im building my next protege

I've had this discussion a few times. The consensus is that cryo is really only good for wear. It does do some stress relief which results in some improved strength, but not anything major. Unless you are hoping for 100,000 miles or something I wouldn't bother with the cryo.
