I just received my K&N replacement filter ( I ordered one before this one & it was not the right filter ) & installed it today, needless to say I had my stock filter in my car for a good part of 12,000 miles give or take
The thing is before I installed the filter I was hearing a noise coming from the top of the engine somewhere, like a hissing. I found the noise coming from somewhere in the FPR tie off. So today I installed the filter & went for a drive, right away it felt better, but not what I thought it would be. So I then decided to remove the FPR kit & boom, now the car felt right
I thought the flash did nothing to the fuel pressure, but guess I was wrong.
Get this, its raining up here & after I finished removing the kit I went out for a ride, I hit first gear & waited to gain traction, then jumped right on second gear & when the boost came on the wheels slipped even after I was already in gear.Next run, I went into second gear & had no traction at all, what a blast I was having out there.
Anyway, sorry for the long post, but if any of you guys are still running the FPR kit after the flash, it is a good idea to take it off. This may have been talked about before, but I for one thought the FPR kit did nothing to hinder performance & guess what, it does..( after flash of course )

The flash didn't touch the fuel maps, it adjusted the timing...

I thought the same thing, but along with how the car feels now, other people are saying the flash did adjust the fuel pressure. The car dose feel better after take it off & I didnt reset the ECU.

The flash did redo the fuel map, and advanced timing. Thats what has been said before, but i dont think anyone really knows for sure.

And i love my K@N filter.. makes the turbo about 3x as loud. :)

Rain Sucks. I have good tread left on my tires, and just barely giving it any gas i lose traction....
Snow should be interesting.

DONT DO SNOW IN THE STOCK TIRES....trust me...I have bad memories of almost pasting my MSP when it was 1 week old! Stock tires have 0....I mean ZERO traction in snow! Just my Strong opinion.

Yeah I almost got crucified for saying that I was going to run the stock tires in the snow. It makes sense. The stock tires aren't even mud and snow rated.

If you look at the ridiculously long ECU Flash thread there is a graph of the HP and the Fuel Map before and after the flash. The fuel map reads slightly leaner in the higher RPM post-flash but only slightly.

bah im too poor for winter tires
We dont have constant snow here... and when it does its usually not bad, and the roads are kept fairly clean....
And if i wreck, i'll just sue mazda for not equipping the car with proper tires for the climate. ;)

Good luck...The two days it actually iced/snowed here last FEB it was WORTHLESS to try and drive. I mean these tires WILL NOT WORK in the snow. It was totally amazing just how little traction the treads have....I mean it was a total black hole effect on adhesion. I am glad it only lasted two days.

I've taken datalogs of the stock fuel maps, it has changed, but ever so slightly, and its all in the nice detonation range up top.

hmmmm ... i've kept my stock tires for about 3 weeks when i got the car and you guys know how much it snows up here. It was in the middle of FEB and although i know and saw that these tires suck in snow, it's not that bad when you know how to drive in snow. but we're used to that kinda driving conditions here, there's snow on the ground like 6 months a year hehe =)[/threadjack]

I made it fine through winter on my stock tires, through snow and sleet. Got stuck in my driveway a couple of times but other than that, just drive slow and break REALLY early. You'll be fine.

what type of filter did you get? i wrote to k&n and they tried to tell me they didn't have a panel filter for the '03 msp. what the f***?! if they do, what is the product number?

just go to your local auto parts store and get a filter for any protege, they are all the same, except the old ones probably.

yeah, i went to advance auto parts and ordered one last night, picked it up and put it in this morning. it was $33.28 and is K&N Part #33-2134.

turbo is definitely a little bit louder.
