Teeson's Probege Build Thread

you'll love redoing your wiring over and over

mine is about 85% where is like it

i caught in between letting my kl control the tranny and starter, which is pretty easy but its a lot of cutting and splicing
i cant do 1 ecu because the kl ecu cant control it all
im thinking about upgrading to obd2
requires boost sensor (i got 2)
2 more O2 sensors i think
different ecu, different wiring for sure
new dist?
and i think 2 or 3 more sensors

swapped the EGR line to the 5th cylinder, didn't seem to help the idle thing... I have the ECU on switched power, so it resets every time I turn the car off. The idle starts high, then it settles to a low idle, then by the end of my 40 minute/40 km commute its doing the lopey idle again.. not sure where to start looking. Have 1 possible vac leak... 1 major exhaust leak, and an absolutely shot front motor mount. I have a new one shipping, but it can't get here fast enough.
Clutch break in is getting better with each drive. I'd still like to smack myself for buying a 6-puck. Don't do it kids, its not cool, not needed for performance. Its' NOT a DD clutch, I don't even think these things below in fwd cars. Maybe monster drag ones..

also having a ball of a time tracking down the reverse trigger wire; it changes color a few times in the car, and its not in the ECU harness of either car. Need a tach too.
Oh getting half decent MPG's too for it running pig rich and idling high. Guessing I'll get around 550 km to this tank, which was decent for the old engine. Speaking of the old engine, its for sale. I plan to make a for sale thread of all my left overs wednesday.

And Jed I guess your not in a smog area, or you'd have to be obd2.. I'm still trying to get my OBD2 interior diagnostic plug to work. After that the under hood one. I'll post up my findings when I get it figured.

Nah.....Jed lucked out and didn't have to have smog, if I remember the conversation correclty. But me.....I have smog - and still have OBDI. Knowing "people" down here is a godsend. Especially when they own a Protege5.

ok ill try to help once i know whats going on

Not if I figure it out first lol. Then I can finally return all the favors you've given me this far...

ya I wish I knew people, I`m just lucky that Aircare doesn`t hire car people.

^^^^ most car places dont hire car people
the guys who inspected my car popped my hood stared at my engine for awhile and never asked me anything about it, and i think my EGR valve leaks or a have a slight rear leak, i get a wiff every now and then

my friend bought an engine lift so this is going to be a fun summer, ill probably repull my engine and swap to obd2, or buy an msd ignition setup and run my haltech and turbo pipping, BOV and wastegate (whistle)

niiiice. You have a build thread yet? be an interesting one to follow, especially with a sell like that.

I have my car in the garage for the weekend, goin to weld the 2 exhaust flanges together to prevent it leaking anymore.. and maybe help it lift away from the ground. Also planning to Seafoam and do my oil change to Royal Purple. Was at the wrecker the other day and I think I've figured out my vaccum idle issue. I don't have any lines runnning to the intake piping, this is wrong. I'm about have way through my changes, wiring is ever closer and I got my wicket Tsunami battery terminals all in and pretty with new power wires.. ahh.
I spent most of my day helping a buddy with this:

We are just so proud we have to show it off!

alright small update, I be slacking lately.

Got some vacuum lines re-routed to the proper place, idles much better now.
Oil is now Royal Purple, and seafoaming was a hoot! my buddy claims he saw flames shoot out the back of the tail pipe, I wish he had gotten a pic.
new battery terminals, redid my power and ground wires with quality car audio stuff:

tranny saver in place:

Have a ton of pics and stuff to write regarding wiring, I have the engine running with no CEL's (today at least), the fans working, all guages except tachometer, still waiting to get a SGI-8. Still trying to figure out the OBD2 and diagnostic ports though. I deem the protege's diagnostic plug easier to keep, so I found a pinout for it and now I just need to spend some time lining them up. The OBD2 on the other hand is being an absolute hassle. I have 12V from the car, ground, I have a data wire from the KL ECU (tried the data and diagnostic wires) the only thing I could think of it that my signal ground is not correct. Need more research and time spent staring at diagrams to figure that one out.

A shameless plug, I have a FS thread for my left overs, including my K&N system.. ya know if your interested

looking good, how are you liking it?

I'm got 28.75 mpg on my last trip home

i get at least 27+ mpg with the probe 5th gear

im thinking about swapping in the p5 5th gear and trying for 30+ mpg, my goal is 35mpg

ya I swapped my p5 5th, we'll see. It seems to drop the RPM's more than it used when I get to 5th, but I won't know til I get a tach. I kinda need a tach to be a gentle driver too lol.
I've put my first full to the tippity top tank, we'll see what kinda mileage I can get. Though i took it for a backroad run last night. I love it, its just soo much better all around. Now if I trusted my brakes even a little bit...

well it drops the RPM by like 200. This allows me to do around 110 at 3k instead of 100. It's not much but every bit helps

I don't know if I missed something earlier in the thread, but why is your engine bay black when the rest of the car is silver?

Very clean though, classy build

^^^ Because it looks awesome. (2thumbs)

Wish I could help out with the A/C issue you guys are all dealing with but I had no interest in retaining it. But glad you guys are chugging along at it and helping each other out and sharing info. :)

Well it was inspired by Lewis, but mine is an anti-rust measure. Page 3 or so I have pics where me and a buddy cut out rust, welded then Val-spar'd everything (almost). My original goal was to paint everything matte black under the hood, not as easy as I would've thought..
