Subwoofer Selection

i use the audison bit one so i can keep my stock head unit. it is a interface unit that allows you to control anything by using there controler that mounts nicely in the ash tray. for my sub i have the JL 13TW5....which is a sick sub! deep bass like a 12inch and tight hitting bass like a 10inch
for my amp i use the JL HD750 with 4gauge wire.
i have a fiberglas box that mounts to the side of my hatch. doesnt take up much room and sounds great

never go with their enclousers goto an audio shop that will build you 1 to your liking so you can tell them exactaly what you want. they will make a rough sketch for you and go from their. custom is always better....thier is no such thing as a universal box unless you dont care how much room it takes up. and yes those are the subs i am refering too.

ya my buddy owns a audio shop here in wi and we did eveything to my liking. flat subs are sick!

i was honestly just going to run into a reputable shop and tell them to do everything but i feel like theyd rob me if i didnt know anything. i have a ms3 and didnt want a huge enclosure. and this car is a lifer, so i need the space in the trunk for groceries and what have you. was looking into a single sub and i herd stock amp shouldnt be used or cant be used? any thoughts of which brand besides JL? still debating between a 10 inch and 12 also. what amp? im a newb to this, but my bose sub suxxxxx, and that is all i know. i think i might get rid of stock HU also...

Find your self a nice 10 inch sub that will work in a 1 cu.ft sealed enclosure. Put some where around 300-500 watts to it, and you'll be good to go. Good bass in a small space. A sealed enclosure will be smaller and more 'musical' than a ported enclosure. Just make sure you buy decent stuff. No cheap crap. And it will sound good and last a long time.

is our stock bose speakers trash? im def. gonna go the thin sub route! does it take alot of work to replace the other speakers as well? any recommendations?

I'm a JL man myself. I'm using a single JL W3 8" enclosure in my M2 and it kics some serious ass. My whole rig is tight and full. As full disclosure I work as a recording engineer, so I have a relatively good idea about proper sound, and I'm all for balanced sound and 'support' of the lower couple octaves, rather than license plate rattling.

Anyone who wants to put 1200w dual 12" long throw subs in a space the size of an M3 is so far off their nut as far as sound quality goes that it's not even worth entering into a discussion...

the stock bose speakers are good, not great. but you were saying your on a college kid budget, so i would go with a better sub and amp and then worry about door speakers later on.

I'm with you on that. I use a 10" in small sealed enclosure (the 6 is a little bigger of a car) and its nice and tight. Compliments the factory door speakers with better low frequency extension.

FYI: I run the signal right off the bose subwoofer. The sound is colored a little. The bose HU does its own thing with the sound so your not getting a real "flat" signal to the amp. The coloring of the low end gets worse when you push the volume. As the big sub in the trunk starts to push the little sub in the rear deck.

yea bro the bose are junk! it does take some work replacing the speakers, like i did 5 1/4 mids and took out the bose think they where 5x7's, what i did was made a adapter mount for the different size wich i used 1/4 mdf, just take the stock speakers throw em down on the mdf and trace em and cut em out then you can switch to whatever size you like

I have dual Alpine 12" Type X's. I can't say enough about these subs. I've had them for about 4 years now. However, they do require a larger enclosure. But they really aren't expensive at all. If you bought one and got an enclosure to match the width of the hatch (to maximize space), it shouldn't be so bad

heck yea man! Alpine is just awesome!

Hi,

I just got my hands on a 2005 Mazda6 S with a standard stereo system. I would like to customize the whole stereo system. Starting with the subs... I want to add a good amount of bass without loosing all the space in the trunk. I thought about high quality 8" subwoofers for the rear corners of he trunk. Also may upgrade existing speakers Do you have any ideas on what will work well in this car?

yea for the 8" you have some good options like rockford p2's or if you wana get a really sick 8" the jl w7 8" takes the cake! as for the speakers what size are you looking to do in the doors and are you going to amp them? (highly recommended)

yep got the solution for ya man, a single alpine type r 10 in a sealed enclosure, box specs are for .60 cubic ft wich is really nice cuz that's a nice tiny box and lemme tell you the type r's sound incredible in a sealed box! talk about some clean bass!

Hey, I've got an 09' hatch and I'm looking to get a sub without sacrificing trunk space. Should with an under the seat or stealthbox sub? I've heard that the kicker zx 350.2 amp and an 8" kicker cvt84 syv can be a good, cheap combo.

Seems like everyone here likes the JL audio stuff. Personally i prefer the JBL. Im running 2 12" JBL GTIs in a custom fiberglass box. Powered by 1 JBL crown bpx1100.1 amp. And im loving it

Im running an Alpine CDA head unit with a single 12" Rockford Fosgate P3 with a 1000W MA Audio Mono block amp, and the stock Bose speakers. This is my 3rd or 4th different setup, but i like this one best so far.
