Street Prepared build

pics of seat mounted

I finally snapped some shots of the Momo Start seat in the car. I'm not 100% happy with the way it is mounted so I'm going to be testing a new method when I mount the passenger seat and if it works better I'm going to redo the driver's side the same way. Right now the seat sits just a hair to straight. I need a little more slope to the back since I have long arms.

Nice! How much lighter are those compared to stock? I'm interested to see what how the comfort compares to stock too (you daily drive it, don't you?). The harness is hot too... I need to order mine sometime.

It's a 1/4" sheet of aluminum. I took a look at the stock brackets and I think I've found a better way to mount it.

The Momo seat weighs 15lbs. I didn't weigh it with the mounting brackets, but I can tell you that it is at least half the weight of the stock seat. I'll be a little more exact with those #'s when I start to mount the passenger side since the design will change a little and i'll eventually do the same thing to both sides.

so you bolted the seat to the aluminum and the aluminum to the stock places where the original rails bolted up to? I dont think that is to safe if that is in fact what you did. I hope it's not what you did.

looks great! those seats are a screamin' deal, and they fit oh-so-nice. light, too. did your car come w/ side airbags?

where's your rear seat, d00d?

Looks good man, still dont like it cuz they are too small for me and i wont be able to drive the wag of death :-(

You should check out my seats sometime, Corbeau FX1 Wides, and basically the rear of the seat sits almost on the floor. They rawk!!!!!

That's pretty much what I did, but it was a rush job just so I could get the seat in the car and get a feel for it. In autoX preperation sometimes lighter wins out over safer. I'll be modifying the design for the passenger side and then going back to fix the driver's side when I can get another set of stock sliders. It's pretty solid right now as far as side-side and front-back goes. Saftey in my car kind of went out the window when I broke the airbag in the steering wheel anyway.

I did have side airbag seats so the weight difference is huge. My redesign of the mounting will make them a little heavier, but they will be a lot more solid and better positioned as well. I took out the rear seat cushions since I can legally remove them per the owner's manual allowing it for gaining cargo area and since I carry my pitbox back there it keeps me from damaging them.

I did see your seats way back the first time I came to race in Atlanta and I couldn't see over the dashboard.

at least you're not running a go-kart seat liek some SP guys. yikes.

i'll bet the stock airbag seat is at least 40-45 lbs.

nice! i'd take 'em out too if i had a 5...nothing like fold-down seats that actually fold flat. i took 'em out of my 'rolla for that reason. the dogs appreciate it.

***Update***

Got to really play with the car last weekend at my clubs test day. Here is what I ran into. I decided that it would be a great idea to install some camber bolts in the rear struts while I was at the AutoX. I just set them as far in as they would go and just eyeballing it it looks to be about -2 on both sides, maybe a hair more. I rechecked my tire-strut clearence and I have about a 1/4 inch of space to play with. In other words +37 offset is the right answer on 15X7 rims with 225 V710's. I'm glad that worked out after all that guessing from last year. So....what did all that rear camber get me. Holy hell!!! All the high speed transition oversteer I was getting is no more. I can literally toss the car at will now and the rear end stays right where it's supposed to. We had a really harsh downhill "zig" taken about middle of second gear for me and I actually said "holy s***" in my second run because the car transitioned so fast and the backend stayed right in line. Once I got used to the car and made a few air pressure changes after about 5 runs I had knocked off 3 seconds from my times. The really awesome part of all this is that the car still has something left. The camber in the rear is allowing me to carry more corner speed and that means more compression on the outside rear strut. I have now exceeded the dampening ability of the struts with the 450# springs on them. I was getting a lot of bouncing mid corner once the car settled in and hit any kind of bump. I raised the air pressure about 3 pounds all the way around and bumped the dampening up all the way on the struts. That helped a little but the car was still just too much for the rear struts to cope with. I can send the struts off to KYB and get them revalved properly for the 450# springs, but if anyone else has any other cheaper suggestions I'm all ears.

Less spring......hahahahahhaahahahaha..... (hah)

Man I wish I could have rode with you when you came to the Atl. event. I am definitely calling a shotgun position the next time you come down.

Heck, this year I'd like to travel a little more......once I get a car.......

BTW, I think it's awesome how you are constantly fine tuning your car and laying alot of ground-work, and $, for other people to use as a benchmark.

Dude...if your car comes up missing, tell em to look in macon, you'll probably find it here (boom07)

Ok, not really, but damn. It just keeps getting better and better!

Noice! Pretty soon here and we will all be posting stuff about the latest autocross. I can't wait, I love reading all of them.

I'm thinking about coming down for the Evo school just before Nationals so we'll trade a couple of rides with each other. I wish I could a have thought enough to ride with you in the MP3 last year. You were obviously doing something right.

Ok so I just went out and took a good look at my rear camber....I have way way too much rear camber. I'm going to go turn those camber bolts down about halfway. Jeez...how the hell did I not notice it was that bad.

Are you using a camber guage?

Ha...nah...I just set them as far in as they would go for the test day. I might take them back out completely until I can go get an alignment late next week. No sense in keeping them in there until I can get it aligned anyway. I'm going to see a friend later who has a camber gauge. I might borrow it, but it takes all of 5 minutes to change the bolts out so I'm not really worried about it right now.
