So when you say "ported and polished" you are staying within the rules right? One inch either side of the gasket, effectively just gasket matching? I kept seeing this, and I ran in DSP then FSP for several years and wasn't allowed anything more. I had to go reread the new rule book to see if things had changed for 2005.

What kind of struts did you get?

BTW thanks for the oil filter relocation pics, that was one of my next mods.

Britt

In FSP the intake manifolds are unlimited so I knocked off all the weird casting flaws and polished as much as I could reach. The head can be modified within an inch from the gasket surface like you said. I actually ported the gasket slightly bigger and then matched the manifold and head to that spec. Everything should still be within the rules. I started a thread for it somewhere, but I haven't updated it. I'll post the link when I get all the pictures in there.

The struts I got were the JDM Mazdaspeed Adjustable struts. They are the green ones that Corksport used to sell, but they are discontinued now. I got word from Tripoint that the people who tune their shocks can revalve mine for whatever I want to do for $200 in case I get into some crazy springrates. my rear springs are already making my MSP struts cry. Anything that upsets the car mid corner gets the rear end to start bouncing instead of just sliding. Hopefully these new struts will be a little better on the dampening. I don't need much. It's just not right enough now to be annoying.

The relocation kit went a lot smoother than I expected. I was thinking I was going to turn the car on and oil was going to be leaking from everywhere. Those Russell fittings are worth every penny.

here are a few pics. The first is the head that shows I didn't go over an inch into it. The second picture shows how much larger my port job is than stock and the last picture just shows how I trimed the gasket to make the openings bigger.

Oh man. I'm having a hard time not just driving my car around non-stop now. I got the struts in today. Absolutely fantastic. These things are amazing. I've got the fronts set on 2 and the rears on 5. The rears handle the 450# springs with ease. I'll still be upping the springrate on the front as I still feel that the car dives too much under braking and turning, but they only have 300# up front right now and I'm planning on going with a 375# front spring. I'm still working with the ride height to keep the car off the bumpstops, but I should have that finalized early next week. The car handles brilliantly with the daily driver all season tires. I cant wait to mount up the Victoracers and take her for a spin.

Update!!!!

We had our test day today so I finally got to really push the car. My first two runs included high speed spin outs at the end of the slalom. Little too much swaybar. I went in and dropped a little air pressure in the back and loosened the AWR bar almost all the way. I still have about 1/2 an inch of the bar left behind the endlinks. Car is still pretty loose, but the changes helped. I'm not going to fool with it anymore until I can get my front swaybar hooked back up. I disconnected it last year to get a little more weight transfer at corner entry. With the new rear springs I don't need as much weight transfer to get the back end around. I got reports from the sidelines that I was lifting the inside rear tire over 6 inches off the ground and the front tires were rolling over a little too far for my liking so the front swaybar should help settle it down a little.

I can't wait for 225 series tires and an LSD.

Hopefully there will be some pics and maybe a good video of my spinout floating around the net shortly.

Oh...forgot to add...the car is back in the garage for a bent valve. I'll have her running again early next week. Hopefully that will solve my little hesitation problem.

LAst weekend he had the new head on after the other one had a leaking valve. Car wouldnt start. He was gonna swap em back.

any updates?

Well...the motor is coming out of the car next week. The rings are shot and I need to hone the cylinders. When it all goes back together she will have a new LSD, Fidanza flywheel, and clutch. Depending on if I have any money left over I might be able to get my new header as well. I won't be able to race it this weekend, but that just means I get to drive a 270hp Miata instead. I haven't been able to update much since my computer is still broken. The next 5 weeks will have a lot of updates since I'll hopefully be completely rebuilding the motor and the tranny. I installed the polyurethane control arm bushings that I made and I re-installed the front swaybar endlinks, but the car hasn't been out of the garage to test the setup out. I also ported and polished the exhausts ports on the new head which I didn't do on the old head. When it finally does come out it ought to be a whole other animal.

Update

I got the motor out of the car yesterday. I probably won't get back to working on it until Monday since I have to work all weekend. I'm waiting on my tax returns so I can get the new flywheel, clutch, and LSD. I'll be selling my MSP flywheel and clutch as soon as I can get it off the car and take some pictures of it.

Update

The motor is on the engine stand and I'll be pulling it apart this weekend and next week. The really good news is that my LSD/flywheel/clutch and new Racing mazda 4-2-1 header are on their way to my door.

I hate you!

Don't speak too soon. I pulled the motor completely down and my pistons are shot. I ordered new oversized pistons today along with all new bottom end bearings and seals. I have 3 weeks to rebuild the entire motor, put the LSD in the tranny, and put everything back into the car. I can do it, but that won't leave me much time to break everything in before the race. I would love to post some pictures, but I don't have a computer at home right now. I'll try and get some and take them to my friends house to uplaid them.

how far overbore are you going? .040?

you definitely need to get that bad boy on a dyno at some point!

if you can get the pics to me this week ill get em on for ya. If you need anyhelp on the weekend with the car, call me and ill try and repay you for you help when you helped work on my car.
