Stock rubber really does suck...

Stock car and everything for me. Glorious hot summer day today. I was turning onto a busy street and wanted to get up to speed faster with cars approaching, so in 1st gear I just put the pedal down farther than I usually do, but still not flooring it, and it spun the tires. lol, it really sucks. On rainy days sometimes if I'm on a curved section of road, and press the gas a bit harder, I feel the front tires just spin and front end starting to slip away.

Must get rid of stock tires this autumn... what else is good but will last a long time? I'm hearing the Kumho ASX only last like 30,000km, while I'm getting close to 60,000 on the stockers.

I would have to disagree. I find the stock Dunlops to be quite good... Much better than the stockers on previous cars I've driven.

Maybe the road was really uneven? If you were anywhere on Cambie Street where they're doing the construction, I'd believe it...

I have stock rubber on my 02 w/17k and they really suck... rain or shine... they suck... but I will not get new tires until I get my new rims....

If you look around I've seen some threads with alot of detailed information on tires for our Stock rims... If I see anything I'll post the link here.

lol, wow, 40 km/h. It would have been interesting if I broke that record today at 20 km/h.

I give a rats ass what anyone says...I have tired...stocks, toyo tpt's, toyo proxes 4's and now am running Perelli p zero nero M+S.

it's the front suspension. it is not designed to really let the car drive. you can clearly see the camber in the rear and it's almost flat in the front. the real drivers here will tell you this b**** understeers when you need it to stick. the Nero a/s are about as close to the summer as an a/s will get. the a/s dry grip was .92 and the regular was .95. on our cars I swear it's barely over .80.

look at the camber on the mazda 3's it's about equal from front vs rear. let alone our rear suspension allows for tons of roll and is very soft. The P5 may be very responsive, but a REAL corner carver it isn't. It's lightweight and tossability fools you. example... a Crossfire will **** you without even trying. don't kid yourselves and be fanboys.

I don't think it's the tires.

prove me wrong. show me a test or sheet or something on a stock p5 pulling some g's.

countless times on any tire I have lost crazy traction from just normally pulling away from a stop taking a small turn. ALso, I followed a Sentra from a stop to a corner and was losing traction while cornering.

with all that being said...proxes 4's I think have crazy dry grip but crap for wet weather. sidewall waaay too soft.

I'd take the perelli's any day.

Clicknext, give Tire Trends a call, they are in Maple Ridge. I'm sure they could hook you up with a set of good tires. They sponsor MPSport. If you are going around a corner at an intersection and hit the gas, it's not hard to spin the tires on any car. The momentum of the car wants to go forward even more while you are turning. The stock tires I had sucked too, I was freakin out on the Richmond freeway one night when it was pouring, I was hydroplaning all over the place! I was actually driving home with my new wheels and rubber in the trunk. I felt like pulling over on the freeway and putting the new stuff on right then and there. On the other hand, they didn't handle the snow too bad up on the local mountains. Seemed to be good enough to get me up and down without slipping and sliding, and without having to slow to 20kmh, lol.

fo sho. stocks hydroplane very very badly. Perelli's I am happy with. they tramline though. it's all give and take.

I have not purchased a Protege 5 yet but from everything I have read, epinions, msn, yahoo, cars.com, and all other websites, the mazda protege 5 stock tires are extremely dangerous and bad. I don't know what is wrong with mazda, equipping these cars with these crappy tires. My g/f's brand new Mazda3 also comes with crappy tires. Mazda needs to step up to the plate and do something about this problem.

And clicknext, you are a living legend, having survived with those stock tires for 60k miles. When I get my Protege the first thing I am changing is the tires. Kumho Ecsta or ATX all the way, rain, snow, dry, whatever.. Kumho's are really great tires.

Falango, from what I have read Protege 5's seem to be good in the snow, I dont think that's a shining quality of the tires, but more of the cars suspension and drivetrain maybe?

I never wrecked on my stock tires because I'm a good driver (evil) but I had to go slow as *#$% whenever it rained. Especially when I got them to 30K miles. Hydroplaned like hell. It got embarrassing on the highway in the rain because I'd be getting passed by soccer moms in Ford Explorers. I just couldn't go any faster because I could feel them floating.

The Fuzion ZR1s I have on there now were cheap and perform great.

i think he meant 60k km. which is 37k miles. i racked up 52k miles on the dunflops and they were drangerously bald.

i switched mine at 20k, 2k after i bought it :). and mazda p5 driver, every car with stock suspension, even ferraris, are set up to understeer. do you know why? because the average driver cannot drive. its a safety thing, if you drive over your ability, the car will understeer, most of the time saving your ass. a few simple tweaks however, and the p5 is an oversteering b**** :)

^agree with all.

The stock dunlops while plenty adeqaute when dry (sold me on the car! ;) would be dangerous when wet. Climbing a mountain in W(BY GOD)V in the rain i

I don't know if I would hold the Crossfire up as the gold standard of cornering and grip. Every review I have read labeled it as a absolute pig, sporty in looks only. The SRT version is pretty capable, but has a punishing ride. It's apples to oranges anyway, compare the MP5 to another similar car that retailed at $18k. By that standard it's pretty damn good.

Most OE tires suck ass, it's just life. I talked to a guy that worked at Bridgestone, he said that many of the tires they sell to the OEMs are of far worse quality than what a consumer buys in a store, even if they have the same name. They're forced to reduce the quality to meet the OEM price point. Obviously it's less of a problem on more expensive cars. The Dunlops that came on my wife's 4Runner new were trash, replacing them transformed the ride and handling.

For all the people that crashed on the stock tires. The only thing responsible for the way the car drives is the driver. We all know the stock tires are terrible in the rain so when the road is wet adjust for it. No tire is going to grip as well in the rain as it does in the dry thats just physics.

I actually enjoyed driving in the rain on the stock tires because they allowed me to slow down and really learn to balance the car through a corner. Their crappy traction taught me to be gentle on the throttle and always use smooth steering imputs.

That being said I still replaced em as soon as possible.
