Speed 3 - Si

You'd be suprised how little difference in premium it is between a regular 3 and a speed3.

Surely there is difference! Especially to someone who used to pay $4,000 per year on auto insurance. (first)

nobody mentioned yet that mazda did build a car to compete in the EVO, STI class...its called a Mazdaspeed 6! ... I have to agree with anyone who doesnt like the look of the hatchs, but hey different strokes for different folks. There are hatch lovers and sedan lovers. I just wish japan would send us a sedan Ms3...do they have them over there already? I know they were planning on it, but we wouldnt get them in the states.

Sorry, but your wrong, DEAD wrong. The MS3 was aimed at the WRX. The Mazdaspeed6 was aimed at the legacy, as well as an alternative to the Audi and BMW. Actually, the MS6 was delayed several months in order to change the gear ratio's so it would out accel the Audi.

The STI/EVO were never on MAzda's mind. AWD, 300HP rally cars that are essentially econo cars that ride like skateboards and cost much much more then even a ms6 ( or at least they do in Canada 55k for a STi vs 39k for ms6/33k for ms3). Don't take that the wrong way, they are fantastic cars and I'd love to have one, just point out a very large difference.

....and yes, the MS3 should have been a sedan.

You speed three guys seem cool. but keep in mind i'm not comparing prices here. I'm comparing performance.

But your right. The GTI is your competition and you guys walk all over it.

I think the Si coupes look good, and the Si Sedan looks like swampass!!!!

I guess the Speed3 hold its weight when it comes to speed for the value, and everyone has to admit the Si holds its weight when it comes to N/A 4 cylinder performance. I guess thats why it is often brought into debates with turbo and 6 cylinder cars. I cant think of any other affordable car that beats hondas high revving 4-cylinders.
I passed on the Civic Si because it wasn't functional enough for a travel RN who has to move every 3-6 months. I LOVED the exhaust note though. The interior was even more crap-tastic than the 3 however - with the GTI winning that particular beauty contest.

I'm still close to that on my Mustang....

But no, I don't think insurance companies see that much of a difference between the regular 3 and the Speed version. I'll do some research and give you a firm answer in a bit.

Geico doesn't....

Of course, in a year or so, they may wise up.

Funny.. why is everyone whining about a evo and a sti.. yeah we all know (msp3) owners that your not going to get a awd car from off the line... not even a WRX.. but if you try a evo at 55 MPH let me know what happens.... i already know... you can will strongly and its not hard.. im not selling street racin tickets.. but there are alot of cars the speed 3 will beat that alot of people on here are scared to run.. because someone says they cant,, i went from a 06 gti to a MSP3 and without the options.... the mazda is the better car... that i would ever run anyway

I think most of us dont associate a rolling 55 MPH start as a typical "race" event... most associate a "race" with the 1/4mile drag race or the autocross/track day events and in both of those the EVO/STI should bring fear to any MS3. With equally talented drivers the EVO/STI bunch will beat an MS3 in either 1/4 mile or track

I've been browsing this forum for a while and i figured it was about time to register. I love the Speed3 for its price and the power it puts out. However i keep hearing people say that mazda forced themsef into the big power class. To much torque and HP in a car thats only FWD and is not balanced well enough.

I also keep hearing MS3 owners compare themselves to Si's, RSX's etc... But why? You guys need to go play in your own league, turbo Evo's/WRX STi's?/M3's. Those are cars that have 4 cylinder turbo motors (except the M3). Lets see how bad your ass gets Waxxxxxxxxxxxxxxed, LOL, j/k.

Also, why did mazda design their speed3 as a station wagon?????? YUCK!! They should have used the sedan mazda 3 as a template for their speed version. it would have sold like ASS during wartime.

Anyway i'm just making small talk and attempting to feel out the Speed3 scene.

To answer your questions a salesman at a mazda dealership said the reason Mazda went with the 3 hatchback instead of the sedan, was for handling reasons. There is more body so more structure rigidness.
Funny people mentioned insruance. I called my state farm agent, and he said for a MS3 it would cost me 20-25 dollars more a month. I currently have a 2003 Protege5.
I've been trying to find a similiar vehicle to the MS3, and I found a 2004 VW R32. Nice looking vehicle, good options, similair power output to the MS3 plus AWD. 27000 miles for 23000 dollars. Stock except for XM radio. The main deciding factor for me has been final price. Insurance for the R32 was the same increase as for the MS3.

Last Gen R32's are SEXAY!!!!! They are pretty fast too and AWD is a HUGE plus. Just be prepared for those repair and maintenance bills. All things being equal I'd take an R32 over an MS3 but overall the MS3 is the better value

How many people race from 55 MPH??

On track - all the time. 55 is probably the typical exit speed of most "slower" turns on track. I can't wait to get this car to VIR or Roebling - I know it is going to surprise a lot of cars.

My street experience (no street racing) in this car and my past track experience with a mostly stock SVT Focus lead me to believe a quote I read in a magazine - "MS3 will keep up with an STI on a road course".

With the Mazdaspeed add ons, I am convinced this car will run on track with just about anything.

I think i'll keep my $1200 year MSP...

I've always been curious. Mazda offers an upgrade package for about 2K that increase's hp on the speed3 to close to 300, and keeps the warrenty. Has anyone got this option and how does that compare to other cars in this hp range?

ummm...I can see how speed3 vs. si got off topic...But lets here some more comparisons on the two cars we originally started with

Power and handling = Mazda

Engine Longevity, Reliability, Overall Refinement = Honda.

There you go.
