Speed 3 - Si

I've been browsing this forum for a while and i figured it was about time to register. I love the Speed3 for its price and the power it puts out. However i keep hearing people say that mazda forced themsef into the big power class. To much torque and HP in a car thats only FWD and is not balanced well enough.

I also keep hearing MS3 owners compare themselves to Si's, RSX's etc... But why? You guys need to go play in your own league, turbo Evo's/WRX STi's?/M3's. Those are cars that have 4 cylinder turbo motors (except the M3). Lets see how bad your ass gets Waxxxxxxxxxxxxxxed, LOL, j/k.

Also, why did mazda design their speed3 as a station wagon?????? YUCK!! They should have used the sedan mazda 3 as a template for their speed version. it would have sold like ASS during wartime.

Anyway i'm just making small talk and attempting to feel out the Speed3 scene.

I love the wagons but think of it this way. Its like a 4Dr VW GTi?
The prior version of the Mazdaspeed had been the sedan. They like to toss things up every model or so.

Perhaps the majority of people that will be buying this are looking for added utility along with their fun. The only competition for this car is the SRT-4, and thats not out yet. The rest of the cars you mentioned were based off AWD Rally cars. Go get your Si and be happy with that. They're cars, nothing more.

Edit - Good point, forgot about the GTi

Sti: $33,495
Evo IX: $31,399
Civic Si: $21,090
Speed3: $22,240
(Starting MSRP's from Edmunds.com)

Might the near $10K difference in price be the reason we don't compare our cars to the ones you suggested?

The best comparisons are the ones mentioned earlier (GTI & SRT-4).

BTW, some of us love the hatch (had a P5 before this one).

The sedan vs. hatch argument has been done to death.

The hatch is a way better choice because it has way more agressive lines. The sedan is not sporty looking in the least.

i love my hatch, I think the 4 door si looks like ass and while the coupe looks hot, i like having 4 doors. si's are ok, but i wouldn't buy over a ms3.

I'll do you one better. I have a non-speed Mz3 hatchwagonback. I would assert that for the money (OTD $19,121 for Touring version inc. moonroof/6cd, wheel locks, and rear bumper applique) my 150ish hp is more car than the Si in either coupe or 4dr guise. I don't plan on racing anybody (motorcycles and tracks are made for that, not public roads and cars - end PSA), but feel power and handling are more than adequate, and it's a HATCH, which makes it much more versatile. It also doesn't have the wonky dash of the civic and I didn't have to pay a penny extra for the standard carpeted floor mats.

Oh my gosh~! I can't believe you just called it a station wagon! >_<
(when I hear station wagon, I picture something I can stuff 20 dead bodies into)

lol~ j/k I prefer the term "hot hatch", but like others said owning those cars are totally up to one's preference. Performance + versatility = unbeatable deal. To me the hatch looks way more beautiful than the sedan (for the Mazda 3).

I take it that you have been hearing your opinions from Honda guys...

The lines of hatchbacks and coupes tend to make a wedge shape, which looks aggressive, streamlined, and generally very good. Sedans tend to have flat lines, which can look like a brick or a box more often than not.

well if you read the books at mazda, the competition for hte ms3 from mazda is the civic si, the vw gti, and the cobalt ss are what is is relased ot compete with. its considered a 5 door hatch. (mazda dosnt really or reallly hasnt made many wagons that i recall.

but hte wrx, and evo are another class.

plus after talking ot mazda corp guys in cali, they wont do a sedan why, well that styling is called a mazdaspeed 6. they dont want to disrupt the sell of each car.
why have 2 sedans about the same price . change it up, a sedan and a hatch. and well the hatch cant be kept in stock, the awd sedan well dosnt sell as fast. That migh be part of it. since madaspeed6's are ont he lot for 200 days compared ot maybee 7-30 days for speed3's

but they have a reason. either way love my speed 3, was going ot get a used roege. but im a hatch guy.

You speed three guys seem cool. but keep in mind i'm not comparing prices here. I'm comparing performance.

But your right. The GTI is your competition and you guys walk all over it.

I think the Si coupes look good, and the Si Sedan looks like swampass!!!!

I guess the Speed3 hold its weight when it comes to speed for the value, and everyone has to admit the Si holds its weight when it comes to N/A 4 cylinder performance. I guess thats why it is often brought into debates with turbo and 6 cylinder cars. I cant think of any other affordable car that beats hondas high revving 4-cylinders.

Exactly... and additionaly, the EVO and STi are both AWD, while the MS3 is FWD.

You also better get used to the Hatch thing, because from what the rumors sound like, the next STi is going to look a lot like a Peugot. (i.e. hatch)

EDIT:
I take that back, I hadn't looked up the STi in a while, but according to this site the STi will remain a sedan. http://www.tamparacing.com/forums/subaru-tech/314778-official-new-2008-sti-pics.html
When I was in the market for an STi the Subaru guy had just come back from a national conference that said the STi would most likely be the 5 door model. But that was around october of last year. Time flys.

I hope you're wrong. I like the STI the way it is personally.

Honda lover here. 06 Si coupe owner here. I'm selling my Si for an MS3. The Si sedan is hideous. The dash is what a dashboard should be. Functional. Everything is in a good place. The car is a blast to drive, and has been fairly easy to work on (springs, control arms, intake, header, exhaust, reflash, can't recall what else).

I want the MS3 for the versatility mostly, plus I want to do some work to a turbo car. Plus the MS3 is sexy.

No. The STI is in another class, the WRX is very comparable to the MS3. Regarding the Evo, I agree.

Heh, apologies for my very stream of consciousness post.
