Shift Switch Replacement issue...Any ideas? 2015 CX-5 Automatic

Yeah I also have a 2010 Yamaha stratoliner. Love the bike. My car is only 9 years old. I was always told manufacturers had to supply parts for 10 years. Maybe that is an American thing. Canada doesn't give us consumer protection like the states. Also Mazda is the only car maker that is advertising that you will have to pay a monthly fee if you want to use the accessories that you paid for when you bought your car. Heard all the manufactures wanted to do that but only see Mazda advertising it.

I see the unavailability of parts all the time on my tracked '89 Yamaha snowblower.

Data on yearly sales seems to be down right now at GoodCarBadCar but here are US sales from 2012-2022

I think BMW does that too, probably others at this point. AFAIK Mazda only wants to charge for the app, but hasn't started doing that yet. Once you have to pay for that bug ridden abomination you might actually expect it to work well and they would be in all sorts of hot water.

As far as parts availability goes that's all over the map. But as I remember it was only seven years but I think it also depended on the type of product.

Yeah I did see it advertised in southern Ontario Canada that that was was going to give you the first 2 years free before they would start charging you monthly for your use of what you paid for

I can’t say over the 10 years I’ve been here this has been a common failure in CX-5… in fact seems kind of rare. I do agree treating the switch with some cleaning and lube where needed.
Its common for early model years, mainly 2013, 2014, 2015.

I guess most don't report it here. I don't commonly frequent the other Mazda forums. When mine fails I'll probably pick up up a used assembly like OP did and then fix the stock switch if possible and keep as a spare.

I think most if not all the folks here are car savvy and do their own diagnostics up to some point. The people on Reddit are often clueless and ask questions about what dashboard indicators mean...

Yeah my switch has been working fine for. A couple of weeks so not going to pull it and install this other switch. My switch looks totally different than the switch where people said the worn area was on the other switch. To be honest I would find the $40 Canadian for the replacement with the KYDO-46-040 available on Amazon. For switches on the 2015 then nothing you can do but order the whole shift unit.

Yeah it was mainly an early model year (gated shifter) problem that got a revised part. Later models to my knowledge don't have an issue. 2015 might be less susceptible as well depending on when they started putting in the revised switch. I don't remember off the top of my head. I could be wrong on that.

Yeah your 100% right about the gated shifter hence the arm that sticks out of the kdyo-46-040 part. Apparently Mazda was supposed to have fixed it foe the 2015 model up but mine did not work for a couple of days with having the radio staying on after shutting the car off. People should be able to buy that switch on all the model years and not have to buy for close to $800 for the entire shifter assembly. The switch is the same size as the other one just missing the arm sticking out for the gate to engage. Thanks for the gated shift as I wasn't sure how to explain the difference between the 14 and 15. Thanks for everyones input.

I believe it was a mid-year change in 2014 CX-5 from gated shifter to the current straight line shifter. So for 2014 CX-5’s they come with straight line shifter after certain assembly date.

The only reason the gated shifter switch is available IMO is there’s an update to the switch due to a TSB. Your switch on the 2015 CX-5 should have similar improvement for durability like the previous updated switch. Unfortunately yours happens to fail but most of others should last longer.

Like power seat problem on the CX-5, there’re 2 flexible steel braided cables attached to the motor which are making noise or sometimes even broken. Mazda does sell the long cable, TK81-88-0D1, as a “service part” mentioned in a related TSB, but for broken short cable you can only get an entire seat ($1,250+) or a seat bottom assembly ($550+). Luckily people are finding these long / short power seat cables from AliExpress as they are available in China.

Oh wow, I thought it was in the 2015 model they started shifting (heh) to the straight line shifter. Didn't know it was in the 2014's. Good info to know. I also think the 2015 had an early version of the commander knob too?

Commander came with '16s along with sport mode and EPB in US market. I have seen other markets that number their models based on sales years so while a '16 here it could be considered a '15 elsewhere. I think I noticed that in Australia.

No, Mazda started to offer the commander knob with new Mazda CONNECTTM infotainment system in 2016 CX-5 for the US market. But the US 2016 CX-5 which has a face-lift with new infotainment system actually started selling in Feb. 2015. And the same US 2016 CX-5 selling a bit earlier in other countries were 2015 MY, hence you’ll see the 2015 CX-5 in other regions looks like the 2016 CX-5 in the US.

This has all made me curious about exactly what the physical difference is between the the older and newer switch and what is failing, is it a bad electrical contact or a mechanical thing. I'm just asking because I'm wondering if it would be possible to create a 3d printable part to repair the original switches.

My 2014 Touring was built on 9/2013 and has the straight (non-gated) shifter.

And @ColoradoDriver‘s 2014 CX-5 Touring AWD has gated shifter.

Wow, when my switch went out on my 2014, all I did was go to Med Center Mazda and order the revised part and it fit no problem. It was sort of a pain to do the work myself since you have to tear the center console out, but in the end glad I did the work myself.

My car has the gated shifter vs the ones in the newer CX-5's. I'm not sure what your 2015 has, but wonder if different switches based on that.

I'm quite certain I've seen models that still had an actual hand brake and commander knob which led me to think it was a 2015 since the 2016 introduced the electronic parking brake and such.
