Safeguard

can you run a J&S with the SS afc? i know i just bumped a old thread but better than making a new one. so does anyone know this answer?

The user Knox Joe I believe was running into problems using this setup. I don't recall his exact issues or how he set them up but from what I remember reading they should be compatable as long as you leave a certain aspect of the Safegaurge disconnected. This is something I am seriously considering in the future. However, now Splitsecond has the FTC though so I don't know how that would compete with this.

The install takes about 10-30 minutes. very easy to install.

this isn't a timing control, just a knock prevention unit (which it retards timing to do basically), so the FTC and this aren't really in competition with one another. I use a safeguard with my Microtech and my Microtech has far more power than the FTC ever will. In a lot of ways it's like a wideband for timing and an insurance policy at the same time. It makes it much easier to tune your timing and also give you protection if anything ever goes wrong like bad gas, overheating of the engine, failed injector, etc.

I'm using mine for timing control. Pulling 1degree starting at 9psi and also pulling an additional 2degrees midrange from 3500rpms-4500rpms then feeds it back after 4500. I'm at 14psi and planning for 20psi but we'll see how that goes.

happen to know what part of the safeguard to keep disconnected?...i have a v1 afc and im starting to look into this...

Are they still making them for our cars, Steve?

I may want to buy another one to go with the Unichip.

For everyone;

I have no idea what was up with the set-up with the AFC and J&S. Car ran fine with just the J&S and ran fine with just the AFC, but would not work right together. They were both sharing a wire (or two??? can't remember) from the ECU (MAF I think) and that could be the reason why it wouldn't work right, but who knows.

I tried it, it didn't work. I wasted money trying a set-up everyone said should work, but had never tried, then they told me I was wrong.

It would only happen at partial throttle rolling past the 0 psi mark, building boost. A harsh stutter, or bucking, is how I would describe it.

Good luck to everyone!

Oh, if you do try the set-up with the SS AFC don't say I didn't warn you.

Doesn't the safeguard have a maf and O2 clamp that can be installed as an option? If they were installed with the afc, that would screw it all up for you.

Yeah, running the O2 and MAF option when another device controls those things like an AFC is a bad idea overall. So that would likely be the root cause.

John is still making a few here and there for the Protege's. The "new" unit design is nearly done though and the next generation will be available (and it's schnazzy too) in the next couple months.

^^^ Yeah that was the issue. It's nice to know the new model should be out sometime soon. I definitely plan on picking one of these up in the future.

Give him a shout john@j&s.com

Metallic just sold her unit like a day ago. The new one is the 4ch and you only use 2 like the original and a bit more expensive from my understanding.

more like next couple of years. i just got an e-mail from him stating he's working on an "industrial engine" project and is "very busy". so what ever the hell that means, but it sounds like our s*** is on hold.

Must be something new/big that came up then as he wasn't working on it when I talked with him previously. Hopefully he gets back to it soon though as a lot of people keep asking for units.
