Paint problems!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

ok heres the deal.......
today i went to the powerwash in my area... i started to power rinse my car and then when i got to my front bumper it started to peel right off!!!!!!!
upon futher investigation... there is NO CLEAR COAT (or at least not enough), and no flexible or regular primer underneath. its just a cheap ass acrylic or just base........
i dont get it..... tomorrow mazda is gonna hear from me!

wo.........thats bad
Started peeling off ??
Thats why I never go to those power washes........
Concept......tell us what happenes when Mazda heres about this ......Alright ?? Thanks

Does your car happen to be yellow? First off.yellow does not have clearcoat.. at least not the Canadian "Sunburst Yellow"". Having said that , I recall someone else having the same problem on the front fascia/bumper with paint flaking off. Maza re-painted it under warranty. Just see your dealer and they will have a Mazda rep look at it and you should get it repainted for free...

and I am guessing your car is fairly new too....

I have heard of this before...the powerwashers peeling off paint....usually on a fairly new car and the paint has not TOTALLY cured. I had a friend in highschool that did that very thing to his new car....blew off a section of paint on the door that was about the size of a basket ball.....hopefully mazda will fix you up....good luck

mine is a sunlight silver Protege5 and i have used many diffrent kinds of pressure washers to clean my car, and ive never had a problem. but i have however heard alot of problems with the yellow versions of my car in canada with paint comming of easily

paint

mine is silver.
and its almost one year old.... next month.
so the paint shoulda cured by now. its basically bad adhesion of paint.
i will go to mazda tomorrow and ask that they switch me bumpers.
cuz i do not have time to wait for blundering idiots to paint my car.

paint

i had some serious problems with my fascia as well. my paint was literally melting off in the sun. problem was no hardener (sp?) in the paint. mazda attempted to repaint the fascia as a warrenty resolution but the paint was so defective repairing it was impossible. they had to replace the entire front fascia and have the new one painted. what a friggin hassle.

it is true the yellows don't have clear coat but it is not a "canadian" issue. ALL yellows have no clear coat.

here is a response from mazda....

"Thank you for taking the time to write Mazda Canada Inc. We welcome correspondence from consumers and are pleased to be of assistance whenever possible.

We have made some inquiries with our Product Planning Division regarding your concerns about the metallic paint charge on the Mazda Canada web site. They have informed us that the terminology used is incorrect and they will be taking the necessary steps to inform the Mazda Canada web site providers of this and have it rectified. All of the paints on the Proteg5s are clear-coated except for the yellow.

We thank you for bringing this discrepancy to our attention and trust that the above information will be of assistance.

Regards,

MAZDA CANADA INC.

i realize this is from mazda canada but it is the same i got from mazda u.s.

Umm Someone on this board or the "other protege" board called or had a letter from Mazda saying that the Yellow WAS clearcoated. If it was not the Yellow would lift everytime you waxed the color.

I don't have any info about the paint but I did wax my car recently and the paint did not come off.

I used Zaino. I used the clay bar too. I used white cotton towels to buff off the excess wax and I did not see any yellow residue.

i actually called Mazda Canada & Mazda USA 2 times each and asked about the paint. They told me all colors have clear coat.

So I don't know what's going on.

I remember seeing a window sticker online somewere let me see if I can find it.

this has been an ongoing issue...and bumbleG posts here too....just under a different name....

anyway....there is NOTHING refered to on the USA window stickers....as soon as that post went up I went and got mine, they are in my book in the glove box....and I looked at BOTH of them....my wifes is black mica, and mine is yellow....NEITHER window sticker has ANY reference to any clear coat or charge for metalic paint at all...in fact the ONLY reference to the paint at all in where it states on the sticker what color the car is.....thats it.

Alright since I had anything better to do this morning I called MazdaAmerica & talked with one of the techs about the Clear Coat issue. He said the guy that would know for sure is on Vacation until the 22nd of this month, but my tech looked in this other guys public records & found a question about the Red Protege 5's. Within that record it said the Red DOES NOT have a clear coat.

I dont' think this issue will EVER be put to rest....because no matter who calls....we all talk to differnt people...and it seems that NONE of them have the REAL HOT POOP on this. maybe THEY are being kept in the dark just like WE are by their management....it wouldn't be the first time the LITTLE guy was NOT told the real deal.

My car is taking some hits from rocks and the paint is coming off. I think that this is funny because I do not drive this car in any different places than I drove my other car. My other car never had these problems. I am wondering if not having enough clear coat is making the paint come off easier. I don't think that it is entirely rocks, I think it was mostly bugs. Believe it or not, the deilership told me there is nothing they can do about it.:bs:

But if Concept can get something done then I will go back to the dealership, and start giving threats LOL

Same here. Mine peeled off at the car wash. I'm contactring my dealer today to see if theywill re paint the hood, front bumper, and front fenders. They better or I'll go postal!

yes that is my post. In canada there is no window sticker like in the US. I was answering a question someone posted ....does anyone have a window sticker.....

I have a yellow P5 have had it since Dec 11/2001. (wow 7 months old). I now have about 16,000km(10,000mil) There are a few rock chips on the front bumper but I'm sure they're from driving on the highway. I havn't experienced any kind of paint peeling.

I guess I'm lucky not to have the paint problems. But I'm kinda pissed that no one from Mazda can give a strait answer about the "type" of paint used.

I'm gona ask around at bodyshops if they can determain if my car has clearcoat or not on it.

I know of a Yellow P5 in Canada here that just has his bumper repainted based on the paint being too soft or something. he told me his finger print would stay in the paint... so I guess you are having the same problem.

paint

hey jcs that was me you were talking to, when i came over to pick up my shifter.

bumble g you mentioned in canada there are no window stickers. i hope i misunderstood because there most definately are stickers. i don't know if they legally have to be there or not but they are there none the less. i did not get one with my car because my car was not on the lot when i bought and the first time i saw it they had already done the PDI.

as for clear coat, like i've posted a dozen times or so ALL have clear except yellow. this is not uncommon. i would say virtually all yellows for any manufacturer don't have clear (unless it's like a porsche). most times for a solid colour they only use a single stage base coat enamel like what is on the yellow p5s. usually red has no clear as well but this time they put it on. there is a sure fire test to find out if you have clear or not. find a spot on your car that is hidden very well, like under a fender or inside a door jam or something. clean it and remove any dirt/wax/residue. take some 1500 or 2000 grit sandpaper and LIGHTLY rub the paint. if you get white on the paper you have clear, if you get the colour of your car you don't. (for those who have the white p5 you will know the difference).

what i would like to know is why do solid colours like black and yellow have a surcharge (metallic or otherwise) and not red (i don't think white has it either). i would like to sit down with a rep who even has a clue (unlike most) and ask them some serious questions.
