P5 sportronic transmission

Whats up everyone...

What are the best shift points for the sportronic transmission ?? Looking for suggestions/opinions on when to shift to get the most out of it. :D

I tend to shift a little later in the redline area because your rebound rpm in the next gear is much higher. I believe after shifting past redline in 1st gear I can get the 2nd gear to start at 4.5k rpms. Not too shabby. Only bad part is that mine sometimes decides "not" to shift like even when driving normal it just WONT shift and I have to go into Drive for it to go. Anyone else have this problem?

I would just recommend getting the feel of what yoru best shifting points are. To each is their own.

As for problems shifting out of first, I have had the problem a few times. But wasn't sure if i just didn't slap it down hard enough... cause I tried it again and it shifted fine. So not sure if it was just me or something actually is goofed up with it not shifting properly all the time.

(it's probably the latter)

Use a Dyno Graph to know where is the power located in the the band.

www.flyinmiata.com

check the stock dyno.

If you are running stock i think the best shiftpoint is 6,000rpm, after that, our cars hp and torque is a waste of time.

In 1st gear, accel all the way just before rev limit.!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks for the info/suggestions :)

I could not find any dyno charts of stock protege's on that flyin miata site tho...

Anyone eles have any suggestions/experience ??

Thanks for the link dficken. :D

Wow the dyno curve with the turbo but so much $$$ (omg)

On the stock dyno i noticed the torque drops before the peak of the horsepower. So is it best to shift then or wait for the horsepower to peak ??

From what I have seen in my 02 ES. The rev limit appears to be 7200rpm. But I try not to go that high.

Incidentally, I think if you look at where your AT usually shifts on it's own @ WOT is pretty close to the shift points you are talking about. With the exception of 1st into 2nd, which does seem to shift just around 6800rpm. I'll stomp on it later and see where it shifts.

Basically you have to drive it like you stole it:D We just got our Laser Blue MP5 tonite, and coming out of a 2001 Ram Air Trans Am we were used to having power, but for a 4 cyl. its got some balls, compared to an automatic Focus I drove the Fucwuss was a dog, but with the sportronic it makes me feel like im driving a stick, very very fun little wagon.
