Night Terrors.....

So I have a question, is there anyone else on here that has Night Terrors? Now I am not talking nightmares, but Nigth Terrors. Nightmares are just a walk in lolly-pop land compared to Night Terrors. I am rather curious to see if anyone else does, and how you might deal with having them.

I am asking this because over the last year I started to get them again. I used to have them as a very young child, and than they went away. However, they are back and worse than ever!

There are times at night where I wake up out of a dead sleep just scared to s***, with my jaws hurting because of myself gnashing my teeth together. The scary part is, I don't remember anything, but I do know that I have been getting violent while having them. Since they have come back I have almost broken my hand from hitting what I assume is the wall, I have scares because of injurys I have inflicted on myself somehow. On top of that, I fear for the saftey of my fiance who of course sleeps with me, and my son's who although isn't born yet(bout 4 more weeks) will be sleeping with us in the room. I am not so much afriad that I will hurt them directly, but in-directly. I have broken my foot during these episodes, among other injuries.

Some of this may sound like rambling, and I apologies but I am very concerned about them coming back. I stay up as late as possible, simpley because I know when I go to sleep I will probally have one. It is effecting almost everything I do. I have researched Night Terrors, and other than medicating myself with presciptions I don't see much other way of helping prevent these.

I guess what I am trying to do is see if anyone else has these, and what maybe if your willing to share, you do to deal with them. I am trying to see if I can find maybe a more common cause/remedy for this thing.

The only good news I guess that I found out about this, is that it doesn't mean you have some phsycological issues...which is good. But still....

For those of you who might not know what I am talking about, here is a little snipit from http://www.nightterrors.org/

....[font=Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif][size=-1]Night terrors have been shown to appear in stage 4 of sleep. This is what separates them from nightmares which can occur anytime in sleep. It is possible to make a night terror occur in some people, simply by touching or awakening them during stage 4 of sleep. Why night terrors occur is still a mystery. The mind is supposed to be practically void during the deeper stages of sleep. The subject will awake gasping, moaning, crying but more often screaming. Breathing rapidly they will sit up in bed with a wide eyed terror filled stare. This panic will often last anywhere from five to twenty minutes. I find the most amazing aspect of night terrors is that it generates a heart rate of 160 to 170 beats per minute. This is much faster than the normal heart rate that can be attained under most stressful circumstances.....

Well.. I supposedly used to have them too.. caused me a lot of trouble in school.. but .. yeah..

every now and then.. I sleep walk and talk..

kept me out of the army.. heh.. but yeah.. dunno

never really caused any real problems so havent done anything about it.

I had one a couple of years ago. They happen every few years for me. These are truely terrifying. I have nightmares frequently where I wake up in a cold sweat. The bad ones are when you don't wake up and have to endure them all night.

wtf r u doin asking us? you want my advice? go see a doctor if u really care about ur pregnant girl. You think maybe after you broke your foot that might hint you to ask a doctor about ur "Dreams". I pity you for your lack of common sense.

Woa, hey jack ass, I didn't ask for some prepubescent child to give me lip. Here is some common sense for ya, I already did. If you had half read what I said you would have realized these have been going since I was a child.

Oh, and btw. Most people, when they break a bone have to go to the doctors you dip s***.

So with that said, why don't you take your ass off to bed because it is obviously WAY past your bed time, and you are cranky and need some sleep. (321fu)

Edit: Oh, and btw next time you feel the need to pop off at the mouth, espcially when its about something as serious as what I am talking about, I would stop and think. Maybe ask yourself "Would I want someone being a dick to me over something I have no control of, and for the fact that I have some concern for the ones I love" Just do that next time kid.

Ok, ok calm down guys! Lets not get out of hand! Everyone just chill for a minute, and maybe someone will know what I am talking about and have some helpful infomation.

I experienced a phenomenon which can be somewhat similar called sleep paralysis. The difference being that with extreme sleep paralysis, you experience a nightmare without actually being fully physically asleep. You lie awake in bed, unable to move, while still experiencing the dream. Often you can see people or things in your room which aren't really there. It's quite terrifying. It generally happens to people who are exhausted and have some mental axiety.

See I have had that maybe twice, and it was just as terrifing I think as the Night Terrors themselves. Did they just go away for you?

haha wtf is a foot doctor gonna do for your psycho-dreams? maybe you should see a therapist or a shrink. Get your self some anger class's while ur at it, put ur crazy dreamin ass on prozac or zoloft. (upyours)

They stopped as the stress level in my life decreased. I haven't experienced this in a long time.

:D this dude with the psycho dreams needs the green more than i do, might cool his nerves.

Wow,your still here? I figured your parents would have changed your diaper, fixed you a bottle, and put you to bed by now. I guess not.

Um, and as for the "foot doctor" those are also called "specialist" and are only called in when say..the entire foot is busted up, or surgery is needed.

Also, again if you had read my posts you would have seen where it says that Night Terrors have nothing to do with any form of mental illness.

Now off to bed with you child.

man whats with all the e-thuggin on here as of late. if you got something negative to say just shut the **** up it doesn't prove or help anything

i have something along these lines and to be totally honest i started smoking pot so i could sleep better. Little bowl before bed and i sleep great. Its almost impossible for me to otherwise get more then 4 hours. Last night for example i woke up after 4hour forced myself to sleep another 2 then another hour adn i was finally awake by 430... nothing i can do.

i will agree though your asking for trouble bringing this to a fourm for advice... there are several sleep study doctors in this work and i suggest you look into one.

If you havn't thought of it yet try paying a visit to a sleep clinic. You reg doc could let you in on your closest one. Pay a visit or call him/her and see if they can help. At the very least they might tell you why ur having them...

I have no real experience in this, but I would suggest getting more exercise. I assume from your life circumstances you work a 9-5. or 7:30-6:30 like me. While I didn't have night terrors, I did have lots of trouble sleeping. I've found that simply getting a little bit of exercise every evening helps a lot. For me it doesn't need to be a fulll workout, that usually keeps me up, but a 2 mile walk with my wife and dogs in the evening helps a lot to relieve stress and leads to much better sleep quality.

I also would recommend some drugs. You could try over the counter sleeping pills. Or if you don't want those, take something like Benedryl an hour or so before bed. Muscle relaxers work really well for me, but they are a prescription for my wife's back so I almost never take those.

I have also found that smoking a little weed helps a lot too. I wouldn't recommend doing it while your girl is pregnant, nor around your baby as he/she develops. But if you know someone you trust who smokes, ask them to hook you up with a $10 bag. If you are a non smoker and only use it before bed to help you relax, that bag would last you 1-2 weeks easily.

Visiting a sleep clinic sounds like a good idea too if nothing else works, although it's naturaly hard to sleep under observation with wires hooked up to you so you may need to go for a while.

Good luck

Yea when i used to do it purely for sleep 10 dollar bag would last about that long.

As far as drugs... melatonian (sp) works great, Get the 3mg pill and one or two before bed will help you fall naturally to sleep. Its what your body creates once it reach the deep sleep cycle. I dont suggest you take these every night because just like anything added to the body (fats, vitamins, etc) your body will become dependant. You can find it in the vitamin isle of a drug store.
