New 2017 CX-5 Revealed

What basis do you have for this supposed reliability concern?

Please see the link: http://www.jlmlubricants.com/en/how-diesel-particulate-filters-work which I think describes the operation of the filter regeneration process. I am NOT suggesting that there is a problem inherent with the operation when the engine is run optimally thus allowing the filter to recycle as designed. My problem perception is with my own driving cycle and the amount of time I spend doing short-duration, low-speed trips between days when the vehicle is not used at all. In the 4.5 years of CX-5 ownership I have accumulated just under 50,000 km. You can also reference the Australian CX-5 owners group and another for Tiguan owners where diesel owners reference filter issues.

Just sayin'

OK, so... first post here. I have never owned a Mazda, and until this past weekend, never even ridden in one (to my knowledge). I have a 2008 Ford Escape Hybrid that is *probably* about to enter "replace it" territory. Check engine line coming on for different stuff with increased frequency.

The 2017 CX-5 has caught my attention, especially the possibility of increased fuel efficiency with the diesel option that's being rumored. Unlike lots here, I actually like the interior redesign over the 2016.5, so that's a plus for me. I saw one YouTube review that didn't specify the trim, but was demonstrating an optional "manual" mode entered by pushing the gear knob to the left. It wasn't sport mode, but something else. Can someone shed light on what that is called, and does anyone know whether that is supposed to be available on the GT 2017 (especially the diesel)?

The Escape I have now is my first non-truck and my first automatic. I kinda miss manual transmissions, but those are getting hard to find anymore.

I like the idea of rear A/C vents... and read that the rear seats are supposed to recline in the 2017. HOw is that possible...seems like it'd be the issues you run into on a plane when you recline... wind up leaning against the profile of the unreclined seat next to you. Even weirder prospect with that 40-20-40 split in the back seat.

Also, anyone know if the new paint job (soul crystal) might come in anything other than red?

The dealership I did a test drive of a 2016.5 last week didn't seem too "big" on the 2017. I suppose of course they were more interested in making a sell of their current inventory, than in talking about upcoming models.

Anyhow, looking forward to seeing more leak out about the 2017.

Thanks all :)

The transmission mode you are referring to is "MANUAL MODE", and simply allows the driver to control the gearshifts at the RPM they want. This has always been available on the CX-5 since the first 2013MY intro.

The "new" paint is just a new color of red. Mazda has a multi-step layering process to achieve a deep and reflective red metallic. Previous CX-5 called "Soul Red", now its called "Soul Crystal Red"

The 2017's don't exist to a dealer until they can sell one. (gtfo)

LOL@GTFO. Yeah, pretty much. "Nnnoooo... you don't want to wait. What you REALLY want is this little beauty." And to be fair, I did like how it felt and drove, so that was nice. I'll wait, though.

Good to know about the "manual mode" - never been in a car with any such thing. So, no popping the clutch for an emergency start while facing downhill. Rats. (I knew that... no clutch, no stick.) Thanks on the red clarification, too. That really caught my eye - how highlights almost went orange/salmon, and shadows were much... I dunno, deeper? It looked nice, IMO.

Guess I'm in a wait game. Hopefully the current check engine light is the last one for awhile. Kinda tired of plonking a few $hundred a couple times a year, though it could be worse. Mileage has slowly slid downhill, and I'm looking at mid-20s for city driving on the Escape (which is supposed to be its strong suit -- uses brakes to capture energy), whereas it was easily in upper 30s when I bought it 10 years ago. C'est la vie, no?

The reclining seats, if like most brands, are useless and not worry waiting for. Mother had a 2017 Cherokee with reclining seats. Yea...moves about an inch.

Yeah, seats aren't any big deal for me. I was just wondering how that worked. The rear vents, though... my 8yo would appreciate them quite a bit! Haven't seen mention of any rear USB or charging ports... that'd be nice, too!

I was actually all about the rear seats reclining for my 6 year old...then tried the Jeeps. Yea.
I wanted vents too. Car I traded in had them. So far no issue with heat. AC might be a different matter.

In Cleveland, I could see heat being important. Not so much down here in Houston, though :) On the rare occasions where it is needed, I do like my heated front seats. (For those weeks where it "drops" into the 50s or lower, haha). I think I saw the 2017 would offer heated rear seats. That'd be a nice option, too!

You have a 2008 Ford Escape and that is deeply related with 1st-gen Mazda Tribute. :)

"Manual Mode" on an automatic transmission is nothing new and it's been available since late 90's on many vehicles. But the way it operates is different among different manufactures. Mazda selected moving rearward on gear shift (pulling gear shift down like you're changing gear from 1st to 2nd in stick shift) is the "+", shifting to a higher gear but most others selected the opposite way, moving rearward is downshifting. I personally prefer Mazda way although I seldem use it as it's still different from true manual transmission with a clutch.

Lack of rear AC vents is one of my complaints for my 2016 CX-5. I'm glad they're available in new 2nd-gen CX-5. Rear seat back recline has been available on many other compact CUVs too even my 1998 Honda CR-V has it. Not like the front seat back it's has very limited reclining angle so it's doable.

Yeah I like those new amenities been added to 2nd-gen CX-5, and it'd be my top choice if I were in compact CUV's market. But I wouldn't get a diesel at this time due to concerns many people have mentioned.

Also note the gear select option is factory installed for GT only - for Touring its not the stick instead, for sport no idea.

If you're talking about "Manual Mode" on CX-5's automatic transmission, it's there as long as you have an automatic.

The lack of rear vent isn't a big deal on my 2016, even in Minnesota' subzero winter (maybe the rear floor vents do help). The backseat area is my daughter's territory, who's in the car with me 80% of the time, and her response has always been "it's warm, stop asking" whenever I concern that she could get cold back there. A/C was also good back there in summer. Note that I have the center vents pointing straight to between the the front seats as I have allergy and can't take the blow directly.

Heated seat at 40-50*F? I'd be sweating in it :-)

And those Mercury Mariners. Same body (before Ford f'ed them up). Until I read it here, I hadn't heard that Ford and Mazda had some kind of "fling" for awhile. My first vehicle was a 1979 Chevy Luv pickup, and I knew it had a Isuzu engine, so was aware of the... frankensteining. Just didn't realize the extent of it until much much later.

Yeah, that's what the guy in the video was demonstrating. Nudge it forward to downshift, and back to shift to a higher gear. It's all new to me, man. I've been driving stick-shift pickups until I got the Escape. Having a kid changes a person... in more ways than one!

I'm not at all familiar with diesels (I associate them with the likes of old C-model volvos, and delivery trucks), but the possibility of higher gas mileage is appealing to me. Of course, I'm speaking from a very high level and with a pretty healthy dose of ignorance. Seeing things like urea injection I think (wth? gotta inject pee?)... and other gearhead phrases has convinced me I should probably read up on it, and see if it looks good beyond "on paper" at least. How much better is mileage in a diesel (or is that an impossible question) compared to regular gas engines? I'm a mom driver, so fat torque numbers don't matter much -- gotten used to polite starts at red lights, in my 4-cyl... which did require some brain retraining from the 6cyl manual Dakota I was in for the decade before that, haha.

Compare and contrast to my 8YO, who has started whining that she wants me to get a new car because the A/C in this one isn't sufficient for her. *eyeroll*

And yeah. Much thinner blood around here. My South Dakota roots are all gone, and my relatives back north would laugh if they saw what I had just written, hahaha.

In case it's important to you, from the pics I've seen it doesn't look like the 2017 entertainment system (at least in the US model) has a CD player.

Thought someone said just the opposite?!?!

Yea, you're right. Don't see it there. Haven't even used mine.

I really don't like the infotainment like that iPad looking thing. Yea, I know they all have that now. Saw it at the dealer in the 3 and 6. Not a fan. That reason alone I'm glad I got the 16.5.
