My amp fried my subs :(

Well, I figured out pretty quickly that my amp (MTX Thunder 500D) was gonzo when it was drawing obscene amounts of current from my battery and it was hotter than hell. Well, it must of been pumping D.C. to my subs because I replaced the amp and only now have I realized what the amp did to my subs.

Right now they still have the correct impedence but they play very softly and the sound is fuzzy. Looks like I'll be buying new ones.

Check out the pictures. The plastic magnet covers melted. They smell like ass.

Not enough to blow the three 25a fuses on the amp, the 50a fuse on the capacitor, or the 80a fuse on the battery.

Gotta remember what 20 amps will do...my mig welder is less than 20 amps and that can melt heavy gauge steel!

But at what voltage?
Heat is about power, not just one of its components.

DC power will cause a voice coil to WAY over heat. If disotrtion causes too much heat do to the audio wave becoming DC like. Imagine what DC does.

i can get you a hook up on the new adire lineup, if you don't mind waiting till the end of august to get the subs. i'm replacing my 2 year old brahma 10 for a new pair of the brahma 10's.

I thought the Brahmas were a down grade of the originals now?

in a way, yeah. they downgraded them to a 2.5" voice coil which reduces the power handling. i guess after all their preaching about the sub not *needing* 1600 watts to reach full excursion, they found a way that took care of that, but still keeps the excursion high. actually it's higher than last years models. and now they offer it in dual 2 or dual 4 ohm. the downside is that after running the numbers, they need larger enclosures. that's what you get with a more efficient sub.

characteristics of a subwoofer system:
1)plays low
2)is efficient
3)is compact

pick 2.

Do they have 2ohm DVC or 4ohm 8"s?

unfortunately no. i guess the koda 8's wheren't a huge seller so they did away with 8" subs. they do still have the extremis, which is a bad little driver. but it's 8 svc. if they made an 8" like it in 4 svc or dual 2 ohm, it would be sweet.

I dunno. Prolly the same ones, IDv3s. The box is tuned for them. They are $110 at www.sounddomain.com. They were on sale for $89 when I bought them the first time around.

I'm pretty sure the amp caused this and it is no fault of the subs. It happened around the time I transported a table from my fiance's parents house. The seats were down so I turned the remote bass nob all the way down because it was way too loud. That must have screwed something up in the amp. On the way home I heard it pop a few times and then the next day it was over heating. :(

Anyway, I'm not going to buy anything yet. I'm open to suggestions as long as they are 8", can be wired for a 2ohm total load, and will sound good with 500 watts RMS. Before you suggest the 8W7, the amp cannot handle 1.5ohms. The IDv3s were rated at 300watts RMS.

That happened to me once with my Arc Audio 1500-dr and my Tempest. Granted, 1kw to a Tempest isn't a good idea... :D I sent the amp in and had it fixed, it had some sort of problem with the output stage. Definitely have yours checked out too.

Well, I paid $100 for it (ebay). It lasted 2 years. So I just bought another one for $80. I'm kind of worried that the same thing will happen but I'm not about to fork out $500 for an amp.

My solution... $92.60 with shipping included for a pair of Eclipse 8708.4s.

They're rated at about 175watts RMS so my amp will be a bit overkill at 500watts RMS. I think they have a greater x-max than the Image Dynamics though. If they don't sound good (which I doubt) at least they didn't cost much. I think they will match nicely with my Eclipse components. I will have to shorten the ports but the box size is perfect.

I can't wait to get them. I just installed a new amp in my fiance's car so she has bass again (the 5th channel of her amp died months ago). I was tuning it this afternoon and damn her system sounds nice (pats self on back)... CDTech 3-way classics and an IDQ 10" powered by a PPI 5-channel amp.
