Mazdaspeed 3 / 6 K04 Turbo Upgrade - 330WHP!!!

Wow this is still going! good.
i am now at 21lbs at 5800. Really did not gain much power after 18lbs.
Custom tuned on the Standback. I have never dynoed and the car feels faster than before but still a little slow.
The idea with the 21lbs was to see if the internals could hold up. I have about 4000 miles on the current tune.
I just bought a used k04 for fun/rebuild/learn a little. But the car deserves some more flowage than stock i think though.
My little turbo is just blowing hot air these days and i really have to shift early to stay in the compressor's map. Every serious Speed 3 enthusiast should upgrade the Turbo whether it be internals or a larger BB altogether. imho.
Please remind me how to see the details for BNR. And any updates.

Eric...................Kudos for you to see how the engine would deal with 21lb...but its prabaly time to dial the boost down...Without meth..the stock k04 turbo just doesnt do you any good after 19 psi.....I made 274 whp on my 14 psi map!...yet when im at 18 psi...I couldnt push no more than 296 whp...after that its just not worth it.....The BNR turbo looks promising..but untill i start seeing some really good numbers im staying stock....the stage 3 BNR is spose to be a 2871 hybrid, If I slap this on my car and after a good tune make 330-350 whp..then its worth the 12-1300 bucks...right now the numbers ive seen for stage 2 isnt anymore than properly tuned fully bolted stock turbo, though have more power after 6000 rpm is nice :)

Thanks for the note. it was a science project at best (21lbs ). One of my goals has been to run the car out of sixth gear. Top speed or at least pulling in sixth to redline. I do not think the engine design will ever be happy up there in the 6000 + range.
Bore and stroke and valvetrain and all that. It performs like a grunting big block kinda.
I have faced that. But i might exchange some lag for a short burst of boost say 3500 to 6000.
Before we head down that road i will feel safer with another motor at the ready. haha.
I appreciate that you are sharing your #s with us. Those are pretty damn good numbers especially on the Mustang dyno, i hear. I will stay tuned to this thread though now that it has been brought back.

I think the BNR Stage 2 will get there easy, no one has had the time and balls to push it yet. The fact is that out of the box it's running 30 HP or more... once people dial it in the numbers should be there.

I can speak for the 2871r, and it is superior to any frankenstein k04. I have a feeling that most on this forum think the 2871 is a "small" turbo. It certainly is not. I personally would not consider a journal bearing turbo for 1100 that may or may not make 330whp, when there is a 1400 ball bearing option that is good for much more. Even if you are on stock internals, set it to a modest 18psi, which will easily hold until redline, and walk away from a 22psi k04 car. My k04 tune was 291whp @ 19psi, and the 2871r set up is night and day faster at 18psi. Since I am studded and forged, I can turn up the boost to say, 22-23psi if I want, and will still be in the efficiency range of the turbo. If I had the rebuilt k04, I couldn't, and would be left wanting a better turbo. I will post a dyno on my build thread hopefully next week if I can get a few pulls this weekend. Some will never build their motor and be able to use more boost, but some will, and I'm sure would enjoy more headroom in their turbo to take advantage of a built bottom end. Food for thought.

I am glad you are enjoying the Garrett. It is a good unit for our cars absolutely, there are a couple close to that size that are nice options too. i am thinking onthe 30 down the road or maybe a bit more way down the road and some lower psi.
Since you can log data, does your turbo stay happy after 6100 with your car? the egts?
You make a good point about boost, there Always comes a time when you want more.
My car was once too fast for me. Now its a bit of a dog. Fun still, but you know the story. haha I agree have headroom, when upgrading unless you really know exactly what you want. i do think a k04 upgrade is good for some folks though. Especially VW enthusiasts!
add. Congrats on the build.

The reason I am here doing these K04 hybrids is there is a HUGE problem with smoking. Not everyone wants the badest car around that needs tune work everytime there is a change in anything, they just want their stuff to stop smoking. I have talked to many people that have had 2 and 3 turbos in their MS's and CX7's and the problem still existed. I have solved the problem with these units. With that problem solving, we added another 1500-2000 RPM of user powerband. No more turbo fall off up top.

When I get the stage 3 up and going and we put it on a forged engine. I bet the peak numbers of the K04/2871, boost for boost, will compare to the garrett GT2871R. The under curve numbers will be there with it as well! :)

can you point to some users with your turbos that have dyno sheets and vids? i know about the thread over on 6club, already

I've emailed him twice at his yahoo account in the past 2 months and nothing. I'm going to call him this week for either a delivery date or a refund depeing on what he says.
