Martial Arts

Last edited:
I took Tae Kwon Do as a kid for about a year. It was okay, but only good for getting down the basics and as an introduction to martial arts.

I've been doing Muay Thai now for about 6 months and I love it.

I started Seibukan Jujutsu last Feburary, so just over a year. Only 6 promotions to go...

I could go on for some length about how the philophosy on rank promotions are different in SJJ than some martial arts, and if you are interested - pm me, but for now just realize that I am about 1/7th through the technical requirements of this system and I don't regard this Black Belt as a destination but more as a new beginning.

i've never done any kind of martial arts. i've always wanted to do something. but i'm not sure where to study or what to study. ninjitsu has always caught my eye.. i'm a wrestler by heart. very good with grapple and things of that nature. but that's about as far as i went.. about idk.. junior year in high school so i have like 8 years of that. any suggestions?

Find a school that lets you have a free trail period so you can try it out for yourself. Most honest schools should offer something to that effect.

I would avoid any school that has you process loan paperwork (like $5000) cause I've heard horror stories of people getting injured, moving, or Dojo goes out of business and you are still stuck with that loan.

Other than that I did a quick search in Google and looks like you have lots to choose from including Brazilian Juijitsu and Judo, however I will warn you (from my very limited experience in ground fighting and as a former high school wrestler), BJJ won't mix very well with your wrestling considering that BJJ considers laying on your back as a viable defense and turning your back on someone is a very bad idea. It was definitely a mental hurdle I had to overcome and my wrestling was 10 years ago. Though you should recognize the takedowns...

Ninjitsu (Bujinkan Budo Taijitsu) is pretty cool from what I've seen, however I hear that it is greatly dependent on the school since the system doesn't have much oversight from headquarters. So try it out first..

Good luck.

I'm biased, but try judo. Many wrestlers do judo, and vice versa. You might find judo more useful than bjj, as it will improve your stand-up>takedown game, since your groundwork is probably pretty good. Judo encompasses everything BJJ does (that's right, EVERYTHING), it's just a matter of whether your school teaches extensive groundwork, or is very competition oriented. Judo is very standardized, as it's an olympic sport, so the level in most schools is very high, few mc-dojo's around. Also, judo is cheap; I pay $20/month for world class instruction, 2 hours three times a week. Lots of national, international, sumo, bjj champions practice with us. It's no BS training, and because it is basically Japanese jiu jitsu without the joint crushing and bone snapping, you can practice full-force, full-contact, every class, against fully resisting opponents. We do 45 minutes of that EVERY CLASS! It's outstanding.

Yeah, I love it. :D

Find a club!

I'm moving back to South Dakota and they do not have my jujutsu, but I know someone doing Judo, basically that's what I get unless I want to learn Kyuki-Do... I think I'll be doing Judo...

thanks for the responses guys. are these kinds of arts basically a defense? i'm beginning to think that most/all martial arts are more of a defense than anything..

Seriously? Yeah man... that's why they call it 'self-defense'. Any reputable school will promote the use of these techniques as a 'defense' against a would-be attacker. If you're looking for a school that instead teaches you to go on the offense at all times... I suggest the Cobra Kai Dojo.

what was that crapfest you just posted? LOL
no offense but that video mad my blood boil.

I am actually looking for a martial art to practice. I did about 4 years of silver/ golden gloves and then I joined the military and haven't done anything since. I haven't really needed to defend myself though, I don't get threatened too often.

Hopefully you never have to..

It seems that most Martial Arts these days hinge around self improvement (Budo) or competition. I didn't include military fighting systems in my last statement... Krav Maga is for killing.(boom02)
