Lightweight Alloy CF wheels

What do you guys think? I was just thinking they might look hot. But I don't have that much CF on my car yet.

No mention of weight, but I think they are real. Keep in mind, it's CF composite, not just CF for the inner section. That's the same stuff they made the McLaren F1 out of.

well, they can also make composite in that the wheels are alu. then wrapped in C/F then they are a composite of CF and ALU

never seen wheels on car's made of CF, bikes yes, even formula 1 doesn't use wheels of C/f and they have unlimited budget's...

c/f by nature doesn't crack or bend it shatter's.......very bad for wheels...

There's not such thing as a CF wheel, not even in F1. Not that cannot be done, it's just that material resistance issues don't make CF a good option, being delamination just one of the reasons I can recall.

I'd say those are Aluminum alloy wheels with their spokes wraped in CF fabric, in a wet lay-up resin process (the fabric doesn't look well aligned in the pics). True you need a quality resin that will be able to withstand chips and the sun light, but certainly there's not such thing as as a Aluminum/CF alloy... You cannot melt Aluminum and then mix it with resin and CF to obtain such material.

On the other hand I would say those wheels are kinda nice!.

yeah i just don't see it as being a good material for wheels, otherwise someone would have already done it

Thank you for your interest in our new SYSTEM ONE wheel line.

The SYSTEM ONE weighs in at:

17" - 19lbs.
18" - 22lbs.
19" - 25lbs.

These wheels are aluminum wrapped in a layer of carbon fiber. They are not designed to be extremely lightweight, more for visual aesthetics.

If you are looking for an extremely light wheel, we are developing a wheel in the near future which is strictly for the racing enthusiast. The wheel will look similar to the SYSTEM ONE however weigh only 9 lbs. for the 17"... These wheels will be priced around $2500/ set.

I have to say they're pretty honest!

But about that 17" wheel @ 9 lbs. WOOOW...!; That's more than a full pound less than the lightest wheel around in 17", and almost 2.5 pounds less than very light forged versions from manufacturers like Velox !!!

Andres, that's not exactly true. there are a couple of wheel manufacturers that make Full CF wheels for motorcycles. I don't remember the names but will ask at the bike shop this week.

bikes usually weigh in at less then 500lbs total.......that why they can get away w/ c/f wheels

blackstone comes to mind when talking about c/f bike wheels....

I don't know I'd rock CF(when it comes to rims).I'd be 2 worried about them breakin' in an accident or something.

Good info Reffoxel !

But coming back to cars, I think there are other issues that have kept CF away from the manufacturing of lightweight wheels.
Like I said, it's not that it can't be done, it's just that there may be other reasons why metals are still a better choice for Enkei, Fondmetal, BBS & O.Z. just to name some F1 suppliers who would be able to manufacture anything, cost be damned...
I don't know how Valentino Rossi takes kerbs in Moto GP, but I think they don't "attack" them in the way a F1 car has to, in order to do the best lap times, so my guess is CF wouldn't be as durable as a metal in these conditions.
Anyway, composites engineers are already experimenting a lot with "hollow" carbon fibers that are supposed to be even stronger than the regular stuff, at an even lower weight, so who knows, maybe CF wheels are just a matter of time...
