Im running the stage 1 93 octane SR and TIH map. The only other mod i have is a SURE test pipe. I just cannot figure out why im getting this knocking. Wot does not knock but slow around town driving does. Idk if im actually knocking or if something is just banging around under my hood. Please any help or input would really be appreciated

are you hearing a ping (audible knock) or are you just worried about knock retard?

KR has nothing to do with actual knock, and it is trying to compensate for a condition that could result in knock. i pull a few blips of 3-5 degrees kr every once in a while while cruising at very light and part throttle low load scenarios. Heavy load to full throttle Knock Retard situations are the ones that could cause problems.

Im pretty sure KR is due to a knocking condition and not a preemptive measure to prevent knock. if the computer is aware that knock "could" happen under X conditions than there would never be knock

a knock sensor is a purely reactive instrument. when the peiziolectric sensor sends voltage to the ecu (because of knock) the ecu will adjust timing or fuel, etc, accordingly

essentially there is only one ecu setting for WOT sitiations, but there are endless settings for normal driving between idle and WOT. since the 2.3turbo is tuned on the side of performance it is always pushing the engine towards performance numbers and then backing down when the limits are reached

you could get knock in sooooo many ways. from carbon buildup to bad AFRs, or you might have left a wrench under the hood. i could hit your block with a hammer while the engine is running and your ecu would probably sense it and try to change the timing

Makes sense.
I read this post.

Knock Retard is when the ECU detects knock or pre-knock conditions(detonation) in a cylinder, retards the timing and adds fuel to protect the engine.

Knock can be caused by a number of things - lean fuel ratio, bad plugs, oil/gunk in the intake.

Look up 'engine knock' on wikipedia for more information.

I borrowed a friends headphones setup he used when tuning his b20 + t3 turbo civic, and while crusing no noises were herd during or before seeing a kr value on my dh. Perhaps its a defective setup, all parts came from radioshack, but I guess it could be defective, or just me...

And as far as I have been able to tell the stage 1 maps get more power from Ignition timing then boost. Have you tried any other maps? Have you calibrated your maf sensor also?

No I do not here any kind of audible noise, Im simply live viewing the Kr from the access port and seeing the numbers as they pop up. As for screwy AFR's or Fuel trims it seems that all of that stuff is in decent shape(at least so that I wouldnt be hitting +5 Kr). I did mess around with a stage 2 setup but didnt like what I saw so I took it off. I am fairly new to all of this so I could just be over reacting but I was under the impression that Ive got problems if i am seeing that kind of Knock popping up on my access port.

knock while cruising in normal and poses no danger. it's in the AP help guide. it is just the ecu finding the best timing for gas mileage. stop worrying about part throttle knock and only worry about WOT knock.
