Gas Mileage

The fanboyz keep telling us we haven't waited long enough. If I had known this car would be getting 12.5 to 13.5 MPG, I would really have pushed my dealer to give me a better deal.

I have to wait for 3.5k to 5k+ just to start seeing better mpg?

Feh. Good thing I leased this CX7. Gas just went back up 11 cents here to $2.59 a gallon for 91 octane.

Drove round trip yesterday to JFK Airport to pick up my Kiwi. Temp avg. 10 -20 degrees. Cruise control almost all the way set at 72mph.
310 miles including about 15 miles NYC Midtown traffic, pumped 16.98 Gallons = 18.25mpg.
Not too bad considering. Just had ECU reprogrammed and have 4500 miles on odometer.

Happy motoring

PS. Highest price gas for 93 octane that I have seen is $3.30 on NY part of Palisaides Intersate Parkway..(sick)

how many miles are on ur ride? do you think you should be getting optimum numbers right out of the box? you have stated you buy a ton of cars, new cars, have they always yielded fantastic mileage new?

ive been driving since 96, and have bought about 10 cars mostly hondas and acuras, the best mileage ive ever seen comes when the car is well broken in. add to that, this engine is different than ur run of the mill 4, or 6, so yea, you need to wait a little while for it to break it.

I thought the AC was always on when using the Auto Temp control feature. Heck, when it was 20 degrees over the winter, the green AC light was still lit.

Yes, it is, but you can turn it off by hitting the "A/C " button, which puts you into the "semi-auto" mode.

Another Thought...

KY classifies the CX-7 as a "truck." 20+ mpg on the road isn't bad for a AWD truck. My Miata gets 26 mpg if I flog him mercilessly, and 31 if I drive as a Spartan.

Life's too short to be a Spartan.

Former owner, 1999 Dodge Dakota, 4WD V8 Full Testosterone Package (16 mpg)
Former owner, 2004 AWD V6 Santa Fe, Too Damn Ugly to Endure (18 mpg)

I just hit 5,000 miles. i'm still getting 12mpg for mixed driving. On the highway i'm gettin 22mpg, I went up to Toronto over the wknd.

Lawsuit

Love this car but fed up with the mpg so this is what I'm sending to Mazda and will be sending to some major magazines/newspaper

CX-7 Buyer Beware!!

If you like the comforts a car but the gas mileage of a truck then this is the vehicle!!

Before stating the facts, let me give you some background;
Ive previously owned 2 other Mazda cars, both 626, different years and was very impress with both of them as for performance and riding comforts, on both cars; I accumulated over 150,000 miles on each one!! Very good!

Ive owned this CX-7 since last November and have accumulated over 5,000 miles (mostly highway) and impress in the riding comfort but very disappointed in MPG. One of the main reasons I purchase this vehicle was due to past experience and the advertised MPG!!! But after driving this vehicle mainly on the highway, the best gas mileage that it ever did; was 18.5 mpg which is way below their advertise sticker. The vehicle has been brought to the dealership twice to upgrade both chips (ECU and Transmission) and have not seen any improvements. So basically Im driving a car but with the gas mileage of a truck which Im very disappointed in. If I had known of the gas mileage issue, I would have bought the Toyota RV4 which has a V6 and still produce better gas mileage and have previously owned a Toyota vehicle which was very good and dependable.

Do not forget that you must use 93 octane gas which is $0.20/25 more than regular gas and as we are all aware of, gas is not cheap nowadays!! Its costing me around $40-45 per fill up!! This is outrageous!!!

If there is a lawyer out there that is willing to go to court for me and other owners willing to sue Mazda for Fraud for mis-leading EPA MPG or even under the lemon laws since this will be the third time this vehicle has been to the dealer ship and no improvement have been met, please send me a note at lilolhoss@rcn.com

Disclosure: This is my sole statement and is base upon owning this vehicle for the past 6 months, the vehicle is a great vehicle which Mazda has done very well but again it has not meant the criteria that it advertise on the MSRP sticker.

To Nash04 - Your right to complain

Well, you can do what you want to, however it is far from being constructive and you may be earmarked as a crank!!(enguard)

Why not start a petition asking Mazda, for the sake of good customer relations to pay back in cash (preferably) or credit $50.00 for each 5,000 miles driven as a show of good faith rather than you creating a black eye for a product that other than the MPG issue is a joy to almost all of us on this forum?(first)

BTW: My Dad had a Nash Ambassador with seats that folded down into a bed!!
However, I don't think that you were named after that car, even if Dad was a traveling salesman, LOL

this is borderline rediculous and hilarious at the same time. ur getting 19mpg. complain all u want - its your car, but seriously wow. go buy a crv, get 22 mpg and take 11 sec to go 0-60.

not to mention, 19 +/- is well within the EPA given estimate, so good luck on the lawyer end. If u were getting 12 or lower, u may have some sort of a case, but seriously, ur waisting ur own time and someone elses for having to read that rediculous statement.

I guess some of you have never dealt with big companies but I have with Mitsubishi for their crappy wheels and have won so if you do not try anything then might as well stick your head in the dirt and do nothing! 25% less then what the EPA stated on their MSRP is not justifiable and who said anything about the CRV, the RV4 with a V6 is quicker then ours and has better gas mileage, sorry if some of you are willing to accept it but for what we have to pay for gas nowadays and the price of the vehicle, I feel rip off by the company so you are not happy with what is written then you do not need to read this post! This is a great car but the gas sucks! lol!

I'm not trying to get any money from them, I just want them to improve their gas mileage by tuning their ECU which they can, I have done so on my Jetta and was able to get better performance and mileage improve from 25 to 27.5 on the highway, this is what I really want. They have the technology, now we just need to push them in doing something about it! if we do not let them know of the issue then they won't do anything about it. What is the old saying; if it's not broke>leave it alone!!

If you driving normal speeds on the highway and only getting 19 miles than something has to be wrong with your vehicle. I get 22 on the highway and I have gotten 21 with 75% highway and 25% state highway or loads routes. BTW, I by know means drive the speed limit but I do watch my acceleration and I keep my distance from cars so I don't do as much braking and accelrating as those pesky tailgaters on the road. Occasionly I do floor it for passing and I still get great mileage. When I mix local driving with highway as in daily comutting I end up with 16-18 MPG so I am happy with my results.

BTW, I also own a Jetta and I get over 30 miles per gallon highway but it may be a different model than yours. Mine is a 2005 1/2, which basically is the "new" Jetta and it has a 2.5 5 cylinder engine.

Usually I'm on the cruise control going about 10 over the speed limit (nana) and as you stated; avoid the slow pokes so I do not need to brake all the time. The only time that I did get 22mpg was when the cruise was set at 80 mph which is too high over the speed limits in NJ, NY I barely drive the car in the city since usually I use my work van.

As for the Jetta, I had a 2004 1.8T with all kinds of nice modifications on the ECU and Turbo equipment which is one other reason that I bought this car; Turbo/ECU modifications but as I can see, no retailer as of yet are doing any performance improvements. Hopefully someone will come out with some soon!

Well!!! You can improve your performance and at the same time improve your gas mileage, yes, there is a chance that you could also drop your gas mileage but from past experience which I have quite a bit, you'll improve your hp/torque and gas mileage, again it all depends on how much and what you improve. So basically I do not know what you're missing and I'm not whining just stating my opinion which you do not need to read it. Pretty sad when we make an opinion then we have some people that would cry wolf stating quit your whining, well! I guess that I'm now asking you to quit your whining! If you're happy with what you have then that's great! but I for one am not and stating so. Oh! Yeah! I'm not the only one that is unhappy with the gas mileage or performance so I guess that we are all whiners!!

anyone can complain, go right ahead. ur prob the only person on this board whining about MPG while getting 19. that is and has been my only point.

we all understand the MPG of the cx7 - if i actually got 19 id have a smile on my face.

I finally got my city driving mileage to 17.8. That is approx. 20 miles a day, going 60/40 city, highway. I was only getting 14+ previously.
Too many factors to know what really had the most impact.
1) changed my gas to Chevron Techron
2) turned off my AC, used to have it on all the time even in the cold weather, like how it keeps humidity down (Portland, Oregon area).
3) Reduced my usage of the remote starter.

Very happy with the increased efficiency

Andy

Well, as of the beginning of April, the winter gas gets purged from the supply system. So, by about now, most gas stations are sporting the summer gas which will net you about 20% for mileage. Up till then, the winter gas, which has more MTBE, and has a lower boiling point, reaks havoc within modern engines. The oxygenate actually dilutes the gasoline so that you get less gas per gallon.

I am watching my mileage now. I have been a little heavy with the gas lately since it is still a new toy with mileage down at about 14 MPG. That's mostly city and trouncing it a little more than I should. But, that's expected. :)
