First oil change

I usually have the first oil change on a new car done at 1000 miles. Then every 5000 thereafter.
The service manager at my dealer told me that Mazda puts in "special break-in additives" with full synthetic oil in a new motor.
Anyone else ever hear of this?

That's sorta right...

The Full synthetic Mazda Moly oil installed at the factory is top notch and very expensive stuff, but as far as I know there are no special "break-in" additives used.

I would wait a minimum of 5000 miles or 6 months (whichever comes first) before changing the initial factory fill.

I agree with mazdadude. The high Moly factory oil + assembly Lubes, should remain in the engine for the factory recommended mileage. To dump the first fill early is not the prudent thing to do and remember, that you have a factory oil filter to protect the engine. Ed HAyes

You'd be dumping some really great, expensive stuff way before its time...

Making the first oil change at 1,000 miles is a thing of past. Honda has been warning the owners don't change the factory filled oil earlier than normal scheduled OCI in break-in section of the owner's manual. And it's been proven by used oil analysis that the factory filled oil in our Mazda CX-5 has very high molybdenum content like Mazda moly oil. They should stay in there for much longer mileage than 1,000 miles. In fact, you should turn on your oil life monitor to maximize your oil life and reduce the oil waste. Check your owner's manual and use Schedule 1 Flexible Maintenance for Oil Change which will give you a oil life percentage and a "Oil change due" message when the time comes. The Flexible OCI can be up to 10,000 miles or 12 months depending on your driving habit. You can change the oil earlier than the oil life monitor indicated and reset the monitor to have 100% oil life after you have fresh oil in the engine.

I agree with mazdadude and all others have said above. But for first oil change I'd wait until at 5,000 miles or up to 12 months if the mileage driven is minimum, even if your oil life monitor says you have plenty of oil life "%" left!
