Finally installed my HiBoost kit

:
2003 Protege ES-T
well i'm sure most of you know they got rid of the IHI and went with a T3/TO4E turbo and didn't tell anyone. so after 4 solids days of hell. i got everything completed. i did all the work myself, except for my brother lending a hand on occasion, and my dad for helping me tap an NPT hole in the manifold after i bugged out when i couldn't get the tap started because i had no idea what size hole to drill and didn't want to go too big. but im proud of myself.

started right up and i didn't really have much trouble with the ES ECU either. i was afraid s*** was gonna go down when i hit boost but i loaded a map with all the values above 0psi at 11 and eased into boost and went from there. and goddamn when i got it in the ballpark the b**** pulled hard as **** that night. then once the ECU adjusted the fuel trims everything went to s***, kept getting fuel cut from maxing out my MAF voltage. so i spent all night tonight getting a rough tune and this is what i ended up with. i got everything just before it maxes the MAF voltage pretty much.

in the 3rd pic you can see how i had to drill holes for the IAT and the valve cover breather hose. for the breather hose i bought these badasse nipples vibrant makes, drill a hole, stuff the grommet in there and then stick the nipple in the grommet. i forget what size hole i drilled tho, but it's money.

did i see it go extremely rich a couple of times? weird...

congrats on the install...you have more pride in things when you do the work yourself...no matter how many times you cuss along the way.

sweet, do you have any engine bay pics? I'm curious to see how the Hiboost kit looks..

thanks... yeah it's not a perfect tune yet, hit fuel cut around 6500rpms in first from maxing the MAF voltage so the AFRS bugged out. it'll do that every now and then. and the BOV is discharging to the atmosphere so it's goin crazy rich. i'll stall if i let off the gas while in boost and disengage the clutch. so i gotta make sure i'm in vaccum when i disengage. i'm also getting some crazy compressor surge... funny synapse engineering markets their BOV as eliminating it. guess i just need to adjust the preload.

also when i had the oil pan off i noticed some engravings on the rods. pretty sure they are stock tho cuz they didn't look machined, but i would like to find out whats on the stock rods. but that would be sick if the previous owner built the motor.. but i won't get my hopes up.

i'll try to get some pics tomorrow. there is a good amount of custom work to be done to the hiboost kit if you wanna keep the car as stock as possible, as theres no provisions on anything on the kit. you will need a slimline fan and move the coolent tank to fit the filter. but thats easy, it's just moveing the brackets bottom hole to the top hole and only using one bolt. fits perfect. i also had to hack the **** out of the bumper. it looks like s*** because i'm a function over form guy. guess it was designed for the MP3/MSP/P5 bumpers. right now the only thing i don't have hooked up is my EGR pipe. i cut it and put a vaccum cap on it. and so far the only time i got a MIl about it was when i got really bad fuel cut, but then again i cleared my ECU of DTC's everytime the MIL came on so non of the monitors have had time to reset. so i'm keeping my fingers crossed.

but i do plan on plumbing it to the intake after the maf, i didn't have time monday cuz i was in a rush to finish up then, drove 100 miles back to ft bragg on a bulls*** tune at 10pm. so if thats not balls and the ultimate test i don't know what is. lol

put other pictures in the main post

you can see how the filter fits and where i had to move the coolant tank using one of the mounting bolts. below the tank you can see the empty hole. theres another one up and to the right hidden by the tank. i put the bolt in that hole using the mounting position for the empty hole. fits great.

haha i love this turbo. it still spools quick and pulls hard with little throttle. i have to work to drive out of boost. ******* north carolina having the highest gas prices in the nation.

yeah i kinda wish i put the IAT after the intercooler because i'm running extremely lean above like 4psi during the day. i didn't want it blowing out or any leaks tho. any advice? once the temps drop below like 75-80 degrees it's good to go tho.

great job on the install. Time for a new frontend. That would make it look so much better

dude your in NC??? wtf man i live in fayetteville and ive never seen your car in my life

u in fort bragg area right now or greensboro?

bragg till tomorrow ( friday ) night. got a goin away party for someone then heading to greensboro for the weekend.

i've only been back in fayetteville this week since tuesday. haven't driven around much, i cut through part of my alt, WP belt so i've been trying to drive as little as i can until i can replace it.

i got pulled over yesterday for baking my tires in 1st and 2nd gears... twice... in front of a cop hiding in a gas station. he let me go. but honestly who gets pulled over in fayetteville unless it's something completely reckless.

i've seen a few P5's with wheels, drop, exhaust. one or two MP3's. before i deployed i used to see a turbo'd sedan rollin around a lot. havn't seen him since i've been back. dunno what trim protege it was tho, wish i had a chance to talk to him.

i've been tryin to "pull" on every mazda i see hoping by some chance i'll meet someone on here. this silver mazda 3 took off at a light. i eased off the light shifted into second and floored it and caught up halfway through 3rd. nothin happened tho.

dude, you better be careful with that FMIC. like, REALLY carefull. Sick setup though.

tell me about it' i'm ****** paranoid. i come to a complete stop for everything. i'm thinkin about trimming the front bumper bar, and grinding down the spacers to raise it up some. maybe line up the charge pipes better.

it does sit low but it looks worse in that pic with the angle, and the curb is kinda tall.

im going to put a stock MSP setup on mine sometime around spring time....still waiting on the thunder mani and some ecu parts and i should be set with the install

nice, let me know if you need help or a place to work with a good amount of tools and you feel like drivin to greensboro.

Nice looking setup! I had a few maf cels usually from cold mornings running a bit rich. It can also happen if you're leaning out too. WB and a better clutch are hopefully on the asap list.

Good luck and be content with low boost or not...$$$$$1

yea man just take that bumper support bar off. You don't need it ;)

i was considering it, but with the amount of cutting i did i left it in there hoping it would help keep it from flexing and getting crushed.

and i have an innovate LC-1 WBO2 and exedy stage 1 clutch
