Hey Guys,
So I was driving along, and all of a sudden there was a loud rattling sound from under the hood. So I pulled over, and listened to my new mp5's engine have something obviously wrong with it. When I start it now, the rattling is less apparent, but the rpms are oscillating between 1000 and 2000 rpm. If anyone has any idea what this could be, let me know. Thanks.

its more than likely a misfire code. get the code checked, and get back to us. there isnt any way for us to diagnose your problem with the description you gave

go to ur local pep boys or kragen or autozone, ask them to red your CEL and they will bring out an OBD2 reader and do it for free

or you can buy your own OBD2 reader for about 50 bucks. and read it yourself. you plug it in on the male connector underneath the steering wheel

50 bucks for an obdII reader? damn mine cost like 200$...

I had similar symptom and it was one of the coils went bad. You can test them by measuring the coils. If one is bad go buy the OEM and not cheap aftermarket. I had two in a row that broke during removal.

Well i drove to kragens to get the cel checked, they told me that they dont do that service. but anyways, the cel stays lite solid then when I drive, it starts to blink then stops. It doesnt rattle anymore, it just has no power and the idle oscillates and is very weak.

Sounds like it could be two things.... coil packs, wires, or plugs.... more then likely packs or wires. Did you try to clean the engine bay recently? If you may have water where the spark plugs are.

I had similar symptoms and it was the EGR. Just a thought. This will be the more expensive and time consuming of all of the possabilities.

AutoZone will loan you the tool and they'll tell you what the code or codes refers to.

I dunno' - sounds like the VTCS screws got sucked. badbadbad.

Do you know if the recall (red loctite on the VTCS and VICS screws) was on the motor? If not - and you can prove it - you should be able to collect compensation for the motor. Stop driving it. Pull the plugs and borescope the cylinders for damage.

hey all, so it looks like one of my spark plugs got closed somehow. I dunno if it was from compression or a piston hitting it? Well any ideas on how to avoid this same problem next time i rev up?

It sounds like it could fo been a screw from the VTS or VICS (I get them mixed up) went into the engine and hit the spake plug.... Can someone verify this conclusion?

I am 90% sure that is what happened - it matches all the symptoms in the OP. (sorry :( )

Any warranty on the motor?

If not - it needs to be inspected and the intake fixed before driving.

Me? I would first remove and replace with a new VTCS-less intake and red loctite the VICS screws.

You may find one in the classifieds. If not - remove yours and perform the work yourself and re-install.

I would borescope the cylinder with the the closed spark gap. If there is no debris and no scoring/bent valves, just swap the plug and drive on!
