2001 Mazda Protege
I have a 01 Protege DX and as it stands its auto. I absolutely effin hate this because Im a 5 speed guy through and through. Ive helped switch trannies from auto to manual in RWD cars before, but never seen a FWD done. How hard is the transfer, what kind of parts (other than the tranny) am I looking at, and how long does this normally take to do?

theres a couple guys who have been successful with it
although the work and effort honestly isnt worth it, your better off selling your car, and buying a 5spd protege.

its harder to swap out the trannies on a fwd car because the transmission is in the front and isnt very accessible without the removal of a ton of parts.

on a rwd car all thats in the way is really the exhaust maybe, and driveshaft.

I bought my car for 3000 from my brother...so I dont think I'd want to buy another one looking at price-tags :(
but...
Ive been thinking lately...about a MSP swap...engine and tranny (1.6L isnt hittin me right)...might be losin my license when I get home so I'll have plenty of time...and I'll have to take a s***-ton of stuff off anyway. Worth it?

Well, since you might not be able to drive it, then having it in pieces for awhile might not be such a big deal for you. I say go for it. Search for threads about what parts you need.

what?!@

mang....talk about a negative dude!!

if what you say is true, then changing the clutch falls under the same category...sell your car and buy one with a new clutch.

your post made nos ense, specially in the protege.
it is the EASIEST swap ever!

just get the right parts and you'll be shifting gears in 4 to 5 hours tops!

you need the following:
transmission
right and left axels from manual tranny
shifter
shifter rods
driver side motor mount, the auto is much smaller.
plastic brake fluid reservoir tank
clutch pedal
clutch master cylinder
clutch line to tranny
manual tranny flywheel
brand new clutch and pressure plate
tranny oil
tranny axel seals
misc bolts and nuts

you will learn how to put it back if you remove it yourself from the vehicle.
these trannies will work
93-97 ford probe 2.0
93-2002 mazda 626 2.0 liter
any 3rd gen protege as long as it has a 2.0 liter engine including the protege 5

axels will only work from same car...so you need protege specific axels

you need to splice some cables from the automatic tranny like neutral position sensors and reverse light to make it work with the tranny sensors. i made my car to only start in neutral, while in gear it wouldn't start because i never wired the clutch sensor.

this is so ******* doable...

go for it...

Any idea on the total price tag for assembling all these parts? Guesstimate? Ballpark?

you make this sound so simple just because you did it with older cars and it worked, but it doesn't work that way on these newer cars!!! the wiring HAS to be changed and the ECU HAS to be changed or the s*** will freak out and NEVER run right!

sure maybe i sounded like a dick.

but i can guarantee this isnt a smooth project
doing an auto to manual swap on fwd car isnt easy.

i'm sorry, but the magazines that come on the cereal boxes that you are reading are WRONG

you couldn't nhad FAILED anymore when you posted that even if you wanted to.
i request your post to be deleted because it is so wrong it hurts the internetz.

i did it on a 626 for 200$
i'm ******* serious..

but a more realistic figure would be 400$
just try to get everything from the same donor car and it'll be a smooth swap
i took a bucket with me and i filled it with every single bolt i removed and took pictures along the way while taking it apart
read how-to's online for like 2 weeks until i knew them like the back of my hand
it needs planning, wihtout it, it'll fail on you and you'll end up wihtout a car for a few days

actually the wiring harnesses are different.

when you swap in the manual ecu, the conecctors undoubtedly will differ. the harness itself might not be drastically different. but there will be variations in them enough to at least be addressed as an issue.

when i helped my friend with his mk3 supra, he went from an NA auto, to a 5spd single turbo jdm spec engine. when looking for the ecu in the car, we cound the control unit for the transmission. now im not sure itll be the same way in the protege, because the proteges transmission control could integrated in the ecu...

all i and the man are saying is this will not be easy. you will run into problems. this isnt a simple bolt on project like an intake, which alejo, is what your making it seem.

computers are practically the same, only thing is that you will probably get a check engine light having something to do with the auto tranny.
i never said it was a project comprable to an intake, come on, how stupid would that be?
i did stated is a project that with the right tools and parts can be done in 5 hrs, now...if it takes you 5 hours to install an intake...man..i think you are in the wrong hobby my friend.

don't scare people by saying "oh, buy a new car, your auto is ghey" instead, encourage people....
by doing this the eprson would learn alot
and if they don't want to do it, there are shops that'll do it...but don't say it is cheaper to sell and buy another car....that's just ******* dumb

Soldier9521, Did you ever do this swap?

I've got a 5 speed '00 1.6 DX parts car and am thinking about doing this swap on my '00 1.6 DX automatic. Does the auto car have a auto trans control unit? If so, do I need to swap the trans harness? This would elimintae the auto trans control unit and everything else right? I'm aware that I'll be using the main engine ecu as well.
