DarkAngel's #771 03.5 MSP is going forged......(Build/Log)

Just doing a small build/log thread to show many what my MSP is going through.

The run down:

April: Bought my 2003.5 MSP #771 with the help of my brother. Brought her home and there she has rested for about a month. During the month also detailed her inside and cleaned up a lot of what looked like white dog hair. This was a pita to do! Cleaned the engine bay as well. Looks really clean!

May 15: Long Block donated by a good friend who owns a red P5 (is on this site as well). Gave me his block and same day stripped it down to bare in my garage and got the block prep'd for the machine shop.

May 17: Dropped off block and crank at machine shop to get inspected and worked on.

May 18: Delivered some good/bad news. Crank is not within spec but can still be used. Shop looking if oversize Thrust Bearing is available. If not, will be looking for a new crank. They advised block is good and will be bored .20 over.

Small update.

Went and spoke with the shop. The new crank they had ordered was the wrong one. The place they got it from sent over a cast crank even though the shop verified the crank numbers and that it would be forged. Sucked on my part. Better news though, the shop will be sending out my crank to get redone like new and then having it nitrided. Turn around time, 2 weeks. Because of the down time and not to loose more time I will be sending out my Oil Pump to get inspected and hopefully coated and buying the external by-pass valve ( Doc B ). Almost time to build this puppy up. Going to take off the head and send it in to be checked and re-decked. Want to have all flat surfaces before the build.

for the forged motor he is lookin at probably 500 for machine work, 900 for internals unless he's going pauter, 1200 for misc rebuild items. so he is probably around the 2600 to 3000 mark for the moter. more if he is upgrading tranny stuff and turbo. am i right?

Almost LOL. Your in the ball park.

sounds like its gonna be a nice build how much you gonna spend on it?

So far my tally is $1970, includes the rods and pistons, complete kit, bore/hone, redone crank and Dave B Pump w/ kit. Still have to buy the filter relocation kit but I am pretty sure I can get it for a good price and have the head re-decked and inspected. So I will round up to $2040 for now. The tranny is rebuilt and has new clutch/flywheel. Brakes were redone as well by a shop, flushed as well.

When I bought the Speed, all it had was a blown motor, hole through the block due to a rod. A couple of upgrades as well but nothing major. Spent $1500 straight up on the Speed, guy needed to get rid of it and was firm about the price. I didn't argue with him at all as I agreed. My brother even told me if I don't take it, he would just for the turbo stuff, ecu and misc stuff.

What rod/piston combo you doing?

im also interested

Well for now I am going K1 Rods and Wiseco Pistons. Actually just looking to build back to stock before I upgrade to more. Want to make it more reliable than it was from the factory. Funds are growing really low now due to some unforeseen expenses but my Brother is sort of helping me out a bit. If it was not for him the Speed would probably be sitting in the garage still.

If I was planning balls to the walls HP then yea I would have gone with something better. For now I am happy with this combo.

What helped me on money right now was the spare motor was free, donated by a good friend here locally and is on the forum as well. He is moving away so he gave me all his extra stuff. Gave me two heads, three cams, two throttle bodies, P5 radiator, extra Intake( which I am gonna work on -- VTCS removed already). I am going to take the best head and down the road and have it done right for better performance.

I was contemplating just buying a stock motor and calling it a day but since my friend had a motor for the taking, forged internals were a must. The next big upgrade will be an MFactory LSD. I dont want the LSD to take a dump on me.

Kind of cool that my Brother and I are in Mazda's again. He has his Red 2002 P5, still the original owner. I had to get rid of my 2001 LX 2.0 Protege for a bigger family car but now I am back in a Protege that I wanted when it came out.

Effing you know what!!!!!! I was getting the pump ready for cleaning to ship off this Monday and guess what! The effing pump is bad! Add this to my list now. Man unexpected crap that comes along. Well now I have to fork over for a new pump and send it off. I can sort of see now why the engine seized and went bad. The pump must have seized somehow because the ring gear is stripped and broken. How this could happen I have no clue. But I think I know the main cause of the extra engines demise.

Just Paid and had the brand new pump shipped to Doc B's for coating. Will also be purchasing the kit along with it. Its coming along....... Time to look for a Filter Relocating kit for a good price.

Well I have been searching for a relocation kit and came across these on fleabay. Anyone try these kits out?
OIL FILTER RELOCATION KIT MAZDA PROTEGE MX-3-5-6 RX-7-8
.
Oil Filter Relocation Kit
Trans-Dapt 1150 Oil Filter Relocation Kit 30 in. Length
Oil Filter Relocation Kit

These are just 4 I found which will work for the MSP as they have a M20 x P1.5 thread.

I kick myself fo selling my brand new oilcooler kit 6 months ago by B&M. I did not know I was gonna need it. It came with a relocation adapter as well. (cryhard)

I know for sure a Honda/Acura kit will fit. I used to use the filter from them for my old Protege. Fram 3593A ( believe same as Subaru's ). A lot bigger thats for sure. I only use Bosch now though so I am going to use those for my MSP.

Well I come to find some bad news........ Effing Wiseco and K1 are just not making thier products to customers demand. I have to wait until September to get a set of both when they stated June!. My only options are to go Arias, CP, and Pauter Rods to get this done quicker. This is setting me back a pretty penny now adding to my original total. Trying to sell stuff off now that I really dont want to sell including my HID retro parts for my MSP. Makes me so effing mad and sad at the same time.

Crank is done, Block is almost done. Need the pistons to finish off the final honing of the block to check all clearances and as soon as the bearings come in to the shop check those clearances as well. Waiting on DocB for my pump and PRV to come in. This better be worth it in the end as I am really getting disappointed on Wiseco and K1 and the delayed process I am getting from all this. This should have been a quick in and out. Brother took his 1.6 Toyota Engine in and is done ready for building. Unfortunately he is gonna get his GTS rolling quicker than I am.

Wiseco and K1 long rods you can get. i know theres 2 sets of them left. He only get 10 sets made. Me, DanDan, and J Nato (I think he got themaswell) Got them on this site ass far as I know of haha. Dont know who else got them.

i just got the last set of k1 long rods and the wiseco off of crossover auto performance. i was originally looking at the pauter and arais combo but i wound up having to fork out 637 for a new crank. im also going from a 1.8 to a 2.0 all forged. spent about 4200 so far on parts including a trans. this is quite expensive but im anxious to get it all together. you may want to look into sending your pistons out to swaintech to get coated atleast the skirts.

edit: what bearings are you going with?

$637 for the crank? Dang I have seen them for just under $500 on several sites!

You know its funny but oh well. The vendor I bought them from had them both. I got his last set of stock length K1 Rods though but can order more. I just finished paying for the Rod/Piston combo. At least I can save that cash I was going to spend to go towards all the other things I have to pay for including the machine work. Finally I can finish my build. I should be getting them by Monday/Tuesday and will be taking them to the shop. Then final measurements and honing work will be done and bam! I will start the engine build process. Head will get a refresh or I will see what I can do about that.

Now just waiting for the Oil Pump w/ PRV from DocB to come in. And all my parts will be complete.

For now, I relax with a little bit of Eagles and a nice drink.....

oh cheap good remanufactured cylinder head go to cylinder...heads...intl i got mine for 320 shipped. its an fs9 casting head. also no core charge as long as you send your old head back within a month.

yeah i looked around for some fs cranks online but i couldnt find anything specific to the 01-03 years. i know what im doing but this is the first time that i'm doing this completely alone so I kinda went with whats good and proven but playing it safe at the same time given the fact this is my daily driver and its already been down 2 weeks. i should have my block back next week. then put it all together and drop it back in. cant wait.

i wound up going to the dealer for the crankshaft. bear in mind that I'm going from a 1.8 with the f25m-r to a 2.0 with the g15m-r. the short block i got off another forum member was good minus the crankshaft, it was .030 under so no room to clean the journal's up. rather than deal with custom bearings etc... i just bought a new crank from mazda. i spent alot of money on this forged motor so not cutting any corners.
