Corksport lightweight crank pulley: thoughts?

I'm looking at installing the Corksport lightweight crank pulley (and the SURE Torque R2 engine mount) at my next oil change (12k), but I had a few concerns. Is the engine on our cars internally balanced? Also, I've seen reports of turbo Mitsubishis with lightweight pulleys experiencing premature wear on the crank bearings. However, this is a significantly lower-power application. Should I be concerned?

I am not an expert, but I have always heard "the smaller the engine, the less need for harmonic balancer". Since our cars are a tiny 1.5L, I would imagine that they would be just fine with the Corksport pulley. It's my next planned upgrade.

Just FYI: I had a 70a durometer AWR engine mount that I recently had to take off due to AutoX class rules (and it MIGHT be for sale ;) ). While I havent used the R2 mount, the AWR mount is similar. I can possibly answer questions regarding the effectiveness if you have them, just PM me.

I was initially looking at the AWR mount (Xclr8th turned me on to it at the dyno day we were at), but the SURE mount is a solid piece of billet aluminum, and at $135, it's hard to beat the price. Otherwise I'd be hounding you to sell me your AWR mount, LOL. You should PM her, though, because I think she's still interested. ;)

We have been running the aluminum crankshaft pulley on our project car for over a year now with no problems. The Mazda engines are internally balanced.

I appreciate you chiming in to offer your input! It's at the top of my to-do list for sure. Do you ever offer "free shipping on orders over $x" sales?

I can be flexible, send me a PM with what you want to get.

I drove to Corksports today and had it installed there.
A slight increase in pull for the first couple of gears. I dig it.

Over the years and reading many different forums, the problems people seem to have with lightweight crankshaft pulleys is when the motor is also turbo'd.

My personal theory is that these motors have more problems with detonation than relatively stock motors. I'm 'guessing' that the heavier OEM pulley absorbs some of the impact from detonation. Or, at least helps keep the crank off of the bearings.

I love it so far! The engine seems a lot more responsive...rev-matching is effortless now. The "butt dyno" feels a difference between 4k and redline, but I'll have to wait for another "real" dyno day to be sure.

why is this not more listed in the official page? please :(

hey, i got an email from Corksport Customer service saying that they have been having issues with the Mazda2 Crank Shaft Pulley.

In a nutshell they were coming across an 8% failure rate among the people that had them installed. The inside retaining ring would come loose and your car would be stuck and undriveable until it was fixed, in some cases the ring would snap off and damage other engine parts.

They told me they were removing the Pulley on a permanent basis. Think of it like a Perma-Recall on the product and that they would no longer warranty my pulley if i decided to keep it.

Since i bought the pulley about 2 months ago they offered me a refund for sending the pulley back.

Since i haven't installed the pulley yet, I opted to go ahead and return the pulley...

I guess I could post the whole e-mail that i received if you guys really wanted to. I didn't want to make waves if Corksport had not come out publicly to announce their recall.

yeah...i got my RMA and Prepaid UPS Return label today...it's really happeneing...*sad face*
