I plan on trying my first auto-x race on april 4th. My car (P5, 5spd manual) is bone stock so I'll be racing stock class. Do you guys have any tips or anything that would help me out? I'm really nervous/excited about this.(drive)

Primarily, have fun! Don't worry about modifications. Make sure you have fresh to semi-fresh oil in the car (cheap insurance). Walk the course as many times as possible. If you can't recall the entire course, walk it again (time permitting). I find this is one of the most important tasks. After each run, look back and think about the run. Break it down and try and determine where you might be able to go faster. Also, try your best to look ahead. Don't focus on the gate that is directly in front of you. As a novice, try to focus on the following gate, and with practice, focus on the gate after that. This takes a bit of practice, but once mastered, can yeild beneficial results. Ask around to see if anyone is willing to ride with you to possibly give you pointers. Ask lots of questions, strike up conversations with folks at the event (I find complementing them on their car tends to work well, hehe). Analyze and retain the advice that is given to you and build upon it. Walk As already stated though, just have fun!!

Threadjack: Very interesting and unique Improved Touring car you have there(thumb) , I think if I saw you on the track the shock alone would send me into a spin (shocked) .

Hehe :D . The car tends to amaze many people. How often to you see an Olds on course? lol The car actually belongs to my boss, but I drive it as well. We also have an Olds Achieva SCX that we've built into an IT racer. Surprisingly, these cars do amazingly well for what they are. If only we could keep the axles, bearings, and...oh yeah, the engine together, we'd be in good shape, hehe. When she's in good shape though, she screams. It still impresses me.

Here's a post with pics of both cars.... http://www.msprotege.com/forum/showthread.php?t=52797

well, this is what I can recall from my 1st autox -> try to be 'smooth'.

Don't think you want to floor the car and beat someone at the 1st time. Try to get how your car behave and the track setting. Learn how the other driver takes the line and if you can. get one ride with other driver, that will help me a lot as a novice.

Make sure you add more air pressure into the tire. I think that's all. Have Funs out there. You will do just fine. P5 is a good handling car :)

Just remember that the car will only do one thing at a time. It will either Brake / Go or turn. Never any combination of the two on an auto cross course. Brake before your turn / carry the speed that you entered the turn through the turn and accelerate out. keep a consistant speed in the slaloms and allways look up course.

Hace fun

A couple things to consider while your actually on course. If you hit your turnsignal switch...don't worry about it. If you turn on your windshield wipers...don't worry about it. Push your highbeam selector forward as it may help you to avoid hitting the turnsignals.
