Hi, my 2006 Mazda 3 S Grand Touring has an issue where the fan control dial (the one on the left) does nothing when it is spun -- however if the fan is turned on via the Auto button (the one on the right) then pressing the fan control dial will shut off the fan. So spinning the dial doesn't work, but pressing the dial does work.

The thing is, I believe this first started when I was working on the car stereo and had removed and reinserted it. The fan control dial started not always responding; spinning it didn't work smoothly but for a short time I could make it work by spinning it really quickly. After a month or two it stopped responding completely. So I always assumed that I had crunched some wires when sliding the head unit back into place, but yesterday I pulled the stereo and examined the wires and they all seem intact.

The other thing that possibly broke around the same time is the backlights for the climate control Mode buttons (the circular array between the left and right dials). I think that those icons used to light up so you could see them at night?

Since these two broken items are on the same panel, it makes me think that this isn't just a failing dial and a failing backlight, but I don't know what to look at to narrow this down.

Any suggestions? Thank you for any advice!!
