P0171 Code Came Back After Clearing

Hey all,

I have a 2024 Mazda CX-5 (leased). Last week I accidentally forgot to put the gas cap back on after fueling. Shortly after, the check engine light came on. I scanned it with an OBD2 scanner, got a code, and cleared it.

Now the light is back again, but this time I'm getting:

P0171: Powertrain control module PCM

No EVAP code showed up, which is what I’d expect from a gas cap issue. I did reset it again, but the P0171 came back. Car runs fine, no noticeable performance issues.

Do you think this is still related to the gas cap or more likely a vacuum leak / MAF sensor problem? Would this be covered under warranty since it’s a lease?

Any help or shared experiences would be appreciated. Thanks!

A 2024 would still be warranty (unless you're over 60,000 miles). Let Mazda figure it out. Doesn't matter if it's a lease or purchase.

You can take a look under the hood to check simple stuff like a noticable loose connector or air filter box lid etc. Have you had any service work recently? I recall a member recently having dealer maintenance and they "forgot" to put an air filter in it 🤷‍♂️.

Yes i did have an oil change... however, i saw the check engine light before the service ... i used obd2 scanner to turn it off ... so the light came on after when i filled the gas last week and closed the cover without closing the gas cap and i saw online it could cause check engine light to pop. However, after clearing it, it came back again in a day... so i am afraid if the issue got bigger ...i talked to the dealer they said come Monday to check.

Are you saying the first CEL code after the loose gas cap is different from the current P0171? IMO the current CEL has nothing to do with the loose gas cap: Something else happened and you should let your Mazda dealer sort it out. And please keep us posted.
