The new Mazda 3 has zoom-zoomed in and its set to raise the bar in the family hatchback sector next year!

Its off to a good start, too. The car is based on the class-leading Ford Focus, and blends these proven underpinnings with chassis expertise from the MX-5.

Refinement and cabin quality are high on the agenda for Mazda, so expect plenty of soft-touch cabin plastics and a layout inspired by the bigger 6. Launch engines will come from the Ford stable, with petrol units ranging from 1.4 to 2.0 litres and diesels from 1.6 to 2.2 litres.

As engineers made the latest 2 lighter than its predecessor, the new 3 is set to weigh less, too. Add in the liberal use of biodegradable materials, and it will be one of the greenest hatchbacks around.

Performance fans will be pleased to hear that an MPS model will feature the five-cylinder turbo from the Focus ST. In the Mazda, which is due in 2010, this will offer around 250bhp. And the discreet look of the current 3 MPS is set to be axed in favour of a more menacing design.

As our picture shows, even entry-level versions of the new car will look good, though. Teardrop headlamps curve down into a deep front grille and are flanked by wide wheelarches. A sharp crease runs through each door handle, and kinks above the side sills add drama.

a very imprecise article....

the photo it's a bad PS of the official pics of euro-spec Mazda6.

i don't think that we'll see a MPS version of the new 3 with a volvo 5 cylinder engine..that engine it's ABSOLUTELY inferior to the 2.3 mzr disi turbo....(moon)(lol2)

Yeah....I'm having a hard time with everything in this article and the picture just looks like a 6. Too big to be a 3. And no way that motor is coming over here to NA.

Interesting find though.

guys... look at the spy shots... im almost 100% definite thats very very close to what the new 3 will look like.. " atleast the lines, gills, lights, doors, mirrors, and shapes.

It's fairly obvious that they started with a chop of an Atenza, but I still think it's a fairly good estimation of what it'll look like.

The T5 engine couldn't possibly be going in there, making less power with more displacement and an extra cylinder? No way. The rest of the engine info could be accurate for Europe. The US traditionally gets more powerful base engines than the rest of the world, because, unlike Europe and Asia, consumers here won't stand for going 0-60 in over 10 seconds.

wtf a 5 cylinder??? Outside of that i dig the car, prolly looks even better in the hatch back form.

less horsepower!!!!!! sweet!!!!!!!

I hope Mazda doesn't start developing its own USDM model a-la Mazda6. It will be made purely in Japan, right?

BTW, hatchback please :D

Between the new 6 and the new 3, I'm not really crazy about Mazda styling. I prefer the look of the Mazda5 and Protege5...and 1st gen Mazda6 alot better. I hope they take a turn for the better by the time my MS6 gets old and tired.

Here is another tease from Autocar.co.uk

The next generation Mazda 3 is ready to go into production and will be launched before the end of the year, company insiders in Japan have revealed.

Mazda says it has created a more stylish family hatchback (as previewed by our rendered image) and plans to build on the global success of the outgoing car.

Its designers have chosen an imposing, aggressive design for the front end of the 3. The new car also gets more pronounced wheel arches now a Mazda family trait already noticeable on the 6 and the 2. At the rear, funky tail lamps echo those found on the new Mazda 6.

It all means this hatch should have a more distinctive road presence than its predecessor.

A four-door saloon version of the new 3 will make its debut at the Los Angeles motor show in November, while the five-door hatchback 3 launches at the Bologna Show in Italy in December.

As for that 250hp power rating...Isn't that only concerning the UK/Euro market (or did that car mag make a "boo boo")?

Anyone know what the official claimed hp of the Euro MS3?

Damn...too bad this one is a complete photoshop. I see many RX-8 parts in that front.
