2.0 conversion to 1.8 Coil Packs

I have OEM 1.8 coil packs and NGK wires that have about 5000 miles on them,

Ill let the set of coils and wires go for $100 shipped.

Hmm... I went out to do this but I'm having trouble figuring out where I want to mount the coil packs. The front location is best I suppose but it is RIGHT above the turbo manifold which is super hot and probably not good. Then the other location I thought of using is where my breather filter is. Grrrrrrr...

^Read this thread and you may hesitate to say that it does nothing.

I unfortunatly did read it all. And a couple "think they felt a difference" and that one guy said he didnt notice any difference, but said others who drove it thought they noticed someting.

The one comment a guy made saying that the stock ones were over heating, so he did this and it helped. How is that? By moving them a few inches from the 1000 degree exhaust they now run cooler?!?

If the coils being on top of the plugs is the inferior setup, why has every vehicle pretty much, and high end cars all went that way? Why would mazda step backwards and put them up on top if its not better? Isnt having the shortest route from coil to plug the best?

I will give it that it looks cooler, but the only thing that interests me is the wires for the 1.8 and then some real coils like MSD or something.

Coil on plug is a better setup.....When decent coils are used!

As for moving them and they run cooler. Ive seen this dont on a top mount turbo setup on a MSP. And moving then to the stock cruise controll location did wonders for the heat issue.

Ok, I'm pretty sure one of my coils is going bad so I'm looking into doing the swap.
Advance Auto and Napa are well in the $200 range for the coils but RockAuto has an Airtex brand for only $35? What's the difference? Is anyone using that brand?
Any long term problems or good points to doing this swap from anyone?

The really crappy part is that I just paid a fellow member for a protege over the plug coil type valve cover :( I was going to prep and paint it in time for my timing belt change.

Used them for about 3 days before they melted... Stock for me! I dunno they mat work for you, but I bumped my dwell time way up for a stronger spark and the stock coils handle it jsut fine, but those ones failed after 3 days. Cheap Ko-le-an s***...

I'm not interested in doing this, I have a Microtech with X4 with 4 Bosch coils, but I noticed on RockAuto that they sell 3 different coil setups for the 1.8. The Standard Motor Products (I assume OEM???), Airtex and ACDelco.

First of all, is there any "real" difference between the 3? Ie is there any benefit, quality mainly (I doubt there is much difference in performance), in spending more than the Airtex setup?

I see that Maxx killed the Airtex setup, but is that because he bumped the dwell right up? (Maxx how much did you bump it by?)

Could it be a case that all 3 are made by the same people??? My initial impression is that the bit extra for the ACDelco setup is the go because of the name mainly...thoughts?

I went up to 8ms if I recall...
