Budget Paint Upgrades

'03 P5
Hello people. About two years ago I wanted to upgrade the paint on my '03 P5 and didn't want to break the bank doing it. All paint materials were purchased at Autozone for less the $75.00. The vinyle decals were purchased at "Sign's Now". They were about 5.00 each. So total all in all was $95.00. Here's some pics for you. It was very easy and can be done in a weekend. I've had nothing but compliments. The dark blus P5's just look too plain to me so I had to change it up.

Below is how it was done.

Hood:
Mask off entire hood with butcher's paper and painters tape. Lightly sand to prep for paint. (200 grit) I like the silver aluminum because it goes well with dark colored cars. After applying two or three coats of paint (follow instructions on can), remove all paper and tape and apply two layers of clear.

Side Skirts:
Remove side skirts before trying to paint. It makes life so much easier. Same prep and application as hood. Make sure everything is completely dry before applying any decals. The good thing about vinyl decals is if you don't like it later, they can be removed easily with a hair dryer.

Front and rear bumper:
Same concept as hood a skirts, you just have to be careful and cover as much of the front of the car to avoid overspray.

Upper and lower grills:
Very easy modification. Just remove the grills and Mazda symbol. Prep with a coat of gray primer. Spray, making sure to get inside all the crevices. Multiple light coats works real well in this situation so you don't get runs and build-up. I think this looks better than aftermarket grills because you maintain the mazda emblem in the upper grill.

I hope you guys like the job. I took the pics today and the cars dirty and the paints two years old, but it still looks good. I few imperfections here and there becasue of curbs and garbage cans. I smashed a garbage can about a month ago and scuffed the corner of my front bumper. Good luck and take your time. Patience will always result is a better look.

If you like it, give me a shout.

Paint your spoiler White also man, and a White Pin Stripe along the side than i think it will look even better IMO

I was thinking about doing the spoiler but not really the pinstirpe. that's a good idea. I'll photoshop my pic and see what it'll look like.

Personally I think the paint makes you look like you have an unfinished body kit. I do like how it accents things though. Props to you for just going for it.

im undecided on the final product, but you did good work on the painting.. and nobody can say they got one like urs!

I'm sorry but in my opinion it looks better stock colored. It kinda looks like your side skirts are unpainted...
