Sunglasses

:
2002 Red Protege 5
I want to get a good pair of sunglasses, It will most likely be a nice pair of oakleys, I was wondering if anyone had any recommendations. The one's I like have the ruby lenses, but the prices are so crazy on their website. One pair with ruby lenses is $175, while the other is $400...

I'll probably just have to visit a "dealer" but I had being pressured by sales people. Even if it is just for glasses LOL!!!

They're the number 10 color!!

Here

Oakley's are cool and all that s***. And worth the money for the lenses but for me, I usually lose em or sit on em or break em before 6 months so I just buy a nice set of $20 glasses since I know they'll be gone in a while anyways. But those glass's you have there definately look cool. I think I like the #11 color with the gray on gray. Looks sharp.

If your going to invest in some hi-quality eyewear....I would look at the REVO brand. Their polarized sunglasses are sweet. They make everything so crisp and sharp.

I used to be a huge Oakley fanboy. I had the M-Frames, the Eye Jackets, and then the T-Wires (the titanium E-wires, $220 back in the day). Switching over to REVO was the best thing I did.

I assume since you are thinking about spending a lot of coin on a pair of glasses, that you don't suffer from losing them, scratching them, etc...

Oakley in my opinion is (was) hip. REVO is classy. But straight up, its the lenses and optics that whats its all about. Think about them, or a brand called Maui Jim. Both in my opinion are better than Oakely. But, to be fair, I haven't looked for sunglasses for about 3 years, so maybe Oakley has changed for the better. But that being said, still got my REVOS and they are like the first day I got them.

Yeah, I had a pair of Oakley Razors back in the day... (I think that's what they were called...) I managed to keep them for about a week, when I sat on them and destroyed them in my car.
I just wear my tinted smith and wesson shooting glasses now, there pretty tough...

I used to wear Oakleys sunglasses all the time. I had FrogSkins back in the late 80's, Blades, Razorblades, Mumbos, E-Wires, T-Wires and I currently wear Oakley O5 perscription eye glasses.

I switched to Ray-Bays for sunglasses as I wanted something a little more contemporary that didn't make me look like RoboCop.

I really like my RB Preadator Olympias Link

The frame is resiliant and the optics are great. Too bad Ben Affleck wore them in DareDevil, now everyone's going to have them. Bastards.

I've got a pair of Anarchy Supremes...they're kind of cheap, $40, but they've lasted me almost 6 years, and they still look and work great. Plus, I can't imagine myself in another pair for looks, no matter what the price. .IMO, the whole line is nice and very well priced, functionally they are just as good as any highpriced lens (though I do not claim to be an aficionado(sp?) :)...(ive got gray, not the blue)

Wow I am kinda suprised...well not really. I am I guess an Oakley man. I have worn everything, used to be a ski rep and got lotsa deals, plus I kinda have a sunglass fetish(meaning I have like 6 pair. And yes I wear all of them) This is what I have to say on the subject of sunglasses though. If you are going to pay for them then take care of them. I.E. Don't use your $200 Oakleys to ride a jet ski or mow the grass. I say have sunglasses to suit your needs like shoes. Cheap ones for getting dirty or playing sports, maybe some sport specific. But more than anything make sure the sunglasses fit and are comfortable. I can't stand seeing someone wearing a set of like $400 glasses that look like crap on their head (ie too big or too small or wrong shape) Plus remember you get what you pay for. On that subject I will say tell this story. When I was 18 I was working as a ski rep and beleive it or not Oakley's are expensive even for people who sell them or work for the company. There is a reason for that but anyway I bought a set of oakley Titainium wires. Well I still have them today and they don't even have a scratch on them. I have cleaned them reagularly but have by no means babied them. I have taken them all over the world actually. One piece of advice is spend some money on a case. Oakley makes one called a ballistic case that has yet to fail me. BTW I paid about $300 for them back then and I am 25 now. That's & years boys and girls. Now thats Quality. Oh the only thing to ever happen to them was the ear pieces wore out. All I did was called Oakley and told them what glasses I had and they sent me new ones for free. Anyway I won't dis other brands and actually have a few to recommend. If you want a somewhat cheap but great and almost indestructible set of glasses then check out spy. I have a set of I think they are called flying V or something like that. They are a couple years old. They have features like reverse spring hinges and the lens can just pop back in if they come out. i like Revo as well because they have great optics but am not very hound of their designs. I have also worn Vaurnet & Ray Ban and they are both decent but again not found of the fit on me. I also own 3 sets of smiths. All 3 are different versions of the sliders. I have the small, large and the buzzsaw. I use the large to work on the car or wood work or what ever and the small for riding jetskis and the buzzsaws for skiing. All of those glasses come with interchangable lenses and more lenses are available for purchase. Smiths run around $100, Spy about the same. Anyway you go just make sure they fit you good and you are happy with them.

i got a pair of oakley t-wires as well.. i tried on all kinds of sunglasses and as soon as i tired the t-wires on, they fit my head PERFECTLY, so despite the price tag i bit the bullet and bought it anyways b/c it fit soo well.
btw, as for the ear pieces, are they supposed to be worn with the "fins" pointing up (vertical)? or out to the side (horizontal). I ask b/c when i got the glasses they were in the vertical position, but the surface of the ear pieces seem to imply that they are supposed to be horizontal. Plus when i stick the glasses into the oakley soft case, the fins being horizontal make it be squished back into the vertical position to fit comfortably in it.

I keep mine on the visor of my car with one of those sunglass holder thingies... 4 bucks, never lose or damage your shades, and you always know where they are...

Yeah I have one of those visor clips too but the ballistic case I was referring to has saved my glasses when they were packed or when I was away from my car. I've seen them on Ebay for fairly cheap.

As far as the ear pieces go. Here is a piece of trivia for all of you Oakley owners that didn't have a good salesperson. The ear pieces are adjustable. If you need a snugger fit then the pointed or triangle side goes toward your head or toward the inside and if you don't need them to be tight on your head then the flat side faces in. Oakley designed them this way to accomadate more head shapes. Oh I fogot to add that I also have 3 sets of Oakley EyeJackets. One is broken and is used for spare parts now and the other 2 are worn pretty regularly. I really want a pair of the romeos or some of the new wires they have come out with but when you have 6 pair already it is kind of hard to spend another $300 on a set of glasses. Especially when you have gotten them at discount before and can't now.

I can't imagine spending more than $20 or $30 on sunglasses. I break mine all the time, so it just doesn't make sense to me. I also just don't understand the need to. Its a pair of friggin sunglasses! Do you know how many PS2 games you could buy with a pair of REVOs!?!?!? :D

lol, I was just about to thread jack, DooMer.

I spend my money on the car. :)

I kid. But seriously, man, I guess it's just like any other habit. I dont even own a pair of sunglasses, havent since high school. The closest I've come is a pair of Ray Bans that literally ONLY filter light, not block it, for clarity while on the track. And those arent even mine, I borrow them from an uncle, an SCCA driver when I hit the track.

I cant stand the feeling of having my vision limited, even if by a $250 scientifically engineered pair of superglasses.

There is, of course, no rational basis to what I just said (nor anything else I say). It does look kind of funny to me to see you guys throwing out model names of sunglasses like other folks talk about headers and tires.

hey, Funwagon, is it possible to get replacement lenses and ear jackets for the t-wires although they're not sold anymore?

oh, and thanks for answer to the ear jacket question :)
