some people are forgetting that it's not about whether or not street racing is right, wrong, or if you don't care at all, but whether or not there should be a section about it on this forum and what having a section like that on this forum says about its members.

i feel that having a section on it wastes space and does nothing positive for this board
I mostly voted no since it's already here. This discussion should have been done at it's inception. I just don't like the idea of deleting hundreds of conversations. It's like deleting a small part of history, no matter how insignificant or full of crap it is.

If you have to get rid of it, just make it so no new threads can be started, or move all old threads to offtopic and then get rid of the section.

Not at all, it's just fun. I don't care if i win a street race. I like sharing my hobby with other folks, its neat.

FWIW.....

daedalus brings a good point, the whole damn forum is about going fast. And even if you say "I don't ever speed more than 5 over the limit, i just get there fast," thats crap... IIRC, there is something called excessive display of speed... essentially, if you were to get a top fuel funny car, put a guvernor on it so it can only go whatever the speedlimit on a givin road is, and floor it to the speed limit, you'd be breaking the law. Why?? Because its not safe. People don't expect you to be accelerating that fast, and when you're accelerating that fast, your reaction times, if you are required to brake for whatever reason, are going to be skewed.

That said, i voted keep it.... taking it away won't change a thing, you'll just have people posting s*** up other places about it. Deleting a sub-forum won't make people grow the **** up.

This might have been mentioned earlier but if someone happens to die racing on a track are we going to get rid of all the racing forums? People who street race on empty roads and are organized about it rarely get hurt. It's the dumbass who tries to race while in traffic that causes most if not all of the problems.

i voted no. everyone has raced that car in the other lane just so u didnt have to be behind the slow ass driver when lanes mirged. yes street racing is illegal but also in some states its illegal to modify ur car. (aftermarkets turbos, fmic, etc) so are u going to mod the california forum n delete any post about people modifying they're car? why not just delete the FI and N/A forums? You dont modify your engine so u can get to 55 mph. people street race. here on long island we dont have any tracks where else should we go?

My idea of "Street Racing" is lining up next to someone and when the light hits green, go! It's usually a race between 2 or more drivers. I don't think speeding in front of a slower car before a merge qualifies as "street racing" per se (at least not what the street battles and kills section refers to).

If it is kept, I do think it should be renamed to get the 'kills' part taken out. Street Battles is fine enough.

but there has been posts about peoples protege(5) being beaten to a mirge by a mini van or truck. thats still racing, if the driver of the protege crashed and died the newspaper would still call it racing

(keeping in mind that every state defines "street racing" differently)

the given definition was "competition AGAINST [someone]." speeding up to merge is not racing. trying to beat the van next you, while he's trying to beat you, is. it takes 2 to compete. driving home fast is speeding, not racing, even if you're trying to set a new personal best time.

regardless, it's irrelevant to this thread. does mazdaforums condone/endorce/accept street racing or not?

lol, my joking reference to the slowness of our cars. Keep in mind, I was not racing the van, it just accellerated past me, not at or over the speed limit...

Street Racing is more like how the guy in LA crashed his Z into a medical clinic the other day, severing legs and killing someone, while literally racing another car. If that did not happen, would prolly see a "I just beat a Lincoln post" type thing. That is the kind of thread i am mentioning.

I voted to get rid of it, but I think the periodic self deleting option sounds like a good compromise. I've done some really stupid things in cars on public roads and some of it was documented here a long time ago , but by other people. I don't find it very respectable to brag about those instances where good judgement was thrown to the wind. I've lost friends due to someone else's poor judgement and that may bias my whole opinion about it. Street racing will always be a part of car culture as illegal drug use will always be a part of popular culture. Removing an outlet to talk about it will not stop it from ever occuring and may not even deter it at all, but that isn't the point. A forum this big can never expect to have a singular view on anything and that is part of what makes the community so great. The differences we all have and share here, more often than not, are beneficial to the community. I just don't believe that the Street Racing forum benefits us at all. Unlike the Off Topic section, which has some really cool and helpful information pop up every now and then, the street racing section is nothing more than a outlet for braggerts and universally childish, dangerous behavior.

I like the Street Racing Forum 'cause it gives me a place to post stories about idiots racing Lincon Town Cars and killing innocent people. Maybe they might learn something. It's better to admit things you don't approve of exist and try to deal with it than to just ignore it. Well, you know what I mean.

Good point. It's better to deal with problems head on instead of:

a 16 year old is not going to see a Mazda thread and decide to street race. period.

Do you think that there are any 16 years olds that have seen "The Fast And The Furious" and "2 Fast 2 Furious"?

Think about it.

according to this site, you do
http://www.vansenusauto.com/Tracks/NY-LongIslandMotorsportsPark.php
there's also lebanon valley (about as far away for you as it is for me and it's my closest track) or even englishtown that aren't too far away, but again, not the point
