i decided to make it out of fiber glass just becuase i think it will be easier to shape.

here is my mold will start construction on this soon... i will try it out with carbon fiber also. if your intrested let me know this would be more for you guys who have all the carbon fiber trim. if everything goes right too i will take orders for custom colors. colored vinyle, carpet, etc.

update?

For stereo buffs with subs in the back, my idea was to make one with MDF around the edges covered in vinyl but then use metal mesh in the center covered in grill cloth. Feel free to take my idea an run with it.

ok i laid the fiber glass down it was a pain... i wanted to try and retain the strenth by laying it down as a matt and not in strips welp this wa a bad idea i just flopped it and went back to the way i would do it if i was building a audio box. with grill cloth and fiber glass strip laid on top. much much easier.. i need to let the resin set but looks like its gonna work out.. the carbon fiber is gonna be alot harder than im thinking, since carbon fiber will have to be layed as a complete matt in order for it to look good. on the carbon fiber mold i might just make it flat instead of having the dips in the center. this will mak it alot easier to work with..

i think it would almost look better wiht out the dips.. imo... besides who actually puts stuff in those dips

The CF one wouldn't need dips, but it should have rounded edges.

Another way to simplify the design is to make it all one piece instead of having it fold.

What do you plan on using for hardware?

It has to fold, it attaches to the hatch and lifts up when the hatch is opened.

the brackets that snap into the lock are actually not too expensive so ill be buying it from mazda.. as far as it folding im still not 100% sure how to go about it. it will definatly be a 2 piece design. i was thinking of using a vinyle strip and sow it to make it look nice and use some high grade adhessive to hold it together. carbon fiber is actually kinda hard to get a hold of too. the only place i know is out of stock.

Home Depot has a whole isle full of hinges that you could browse. I was thinking about the vinyl or fabric strip in my head also (something like a backpack strap) but I am not sure how to fasten it to the CF.

Any fabric that comes in contact with the resin is going to absorb some of it and become brittle afterwards. You are better off making the pieces separately and then drilling small holes so you can put bolts every inch or so to secure the piece of fabric. Of course, a hinge from Home Depot will be the same amount of work and prolly be more sturdy.

I deliever Medical Eupiment and can have about 10 Knee CPM's in my car at once. It will take up the entire back of my car.
i've delivered 21 live airbag modules (boxed) in my car once...that's a record i would prefer for D.OT. not find out about...

well the vinyle strip will actually be 2 strips dble stiched in the middle and the 2 piece carbon fiber will go in between the two strips and use some industrial strength adhessive to hold it on.. on the oem tonneau they use adhessive to mount the brackets to it. soo i will most likely do the same. i still havent carpeted the other fiber glass one yet >.>.. this is nothing but a bunch of badd timming taking too long becuase one of my shiftleaders just up and quite with no warnning and now im bussy trying to hunt down his replacememt....

this blows i really wanted to play with this carbon fiber stuff but its never in stock in store or online.. and it jumped from $30 a yard to $40.... i dont know i might scrap this idea if i cant get ahold of any carbon fiber twill cloth.. any one know of any carbon fiber supplier?

alright i finally got a straight answer from someone about the carbon fiber and i found out that there wont be any for sell to the public untill the war in iraq is ssettled...... so thats gonna be a long time...what do you guys think about kevlar? it will be a bullet proof tanneau!!!! haha j/k. it will be a basket weave with black and light gold weave. i might try to dye diffrent colors and see how that goes. soo the time being im gonna make one out of kevlar and see how it goes.

Have you ever worked with it before?

I have a vague recollection of seeing a TV interview with a body armor manufacturer where he said that kevlar is a pain to work with: it's really difficult to cut and the fabric edges can rip up your skin. I think the workers ended up wearing kevlar gloves to protect themselves from the kevlar fabric.

Let him know your not the public, might cost ya 10 bucks

On a side note, if anyone knows, what happens when you drill a hole through carbon fiber? Is there any spider webbing or shattering that might happen or will it drill through nicely without any neggative side affects?

Why would kevlar be available if carbon fiber isn't? I'd think our soldiers in Iraq would be happier to see a shipment of kevlar vests than a lightweight hood for their hummer.

J/K btw.
