What have you done to your P5 today?

I PWWWWWNED a Celica GTS with header, catback, intake, cf hood, stock wheels (the kinda small looking gts ones).. the guy was so shocked that he pulled up beside me at a light a few minutes later and asked me what the hell my car was (maybe he was confused by the "323" badging on the rear).

I wish my car was more sleeper looking though.. the wheels, hood, and especially the HKS SSQV really give me away.

If people didn't try to race me I'd be better able to resist the urge :P

how many lengths

It was a race* to 55 (speed limit) so not many.. I'm a bad judge of these things, but I'd have to say.. 1.5? no clue though really.. he was definitely totally behind me :P

*defined as a "spirited drive"

yeah 180ish hp at like 8 billion rpms.. they make barely more torque than a stock protege5 engine hehe

never understood the major dif btwn torque and hp. :( i know newb question

I washed mine up again tonight. I'm going through more car wash soap than gas. lol

At $ 1.05 per litre ,no wonder.

I don't get it either, I'm totally new to all of this :( . Here's what I've got so far: Torque is the rotational force that is directly produced, while horsepower is calculated from: (Torque x Engine speed) / 5,252 = Horsepower.

So I guess HP is a derivative of torque, where 5252 is the magical number where HP is equal to torque. Anyone have a good explaination of it all for us?

Niiice... I took a RSX a while back just because I didn't want him to cut me off - should have seen the look on his face. It's funny though, I've had at least a few people ask when kind of car I drive. The best was when an older guy in another P5 asked me what kind of car it was - he thought it was some kind of special edition Mazda or something. I guess it was the MSP wheels and the 323F emblem...

Ams, think of it this way and its pretty easy. A Honda motor can be spanked off the line due to the fact that they lack so much torque but if you race one top end....good luck.

But if you have shitloads of torque, it is used more on off the line. Cars that have tons of torque and not a lot of Hp are not good top end.

So basically, HP is used more at the top end, but torque is more useful off the line.

Took off the intake manifold to get better access to the starter and whatnot to hook up some wires and hoses, also working on making the wires not look like complete and utter s*** (see this post: http://www.mazdas247.com/forum/showpost.php?p=3118917&postcount=820 )

Collected a lot of dust and bumper stickers since March 11... :(

dude clean that s***.. buy some "quick and easy wash".. no rinsing needed. I use it in my garage in the winter all the time :P

Well, HP is never equal to torque since they have different units; it's like comparing apples to oranges. I'm not a mechanical engineer, but I could be, so here goes :)

Torque is the amount of force produced at a certain distance from something that rotates, like your axle or crankshaft. It has units of work.

Power is an amount of work done per unit time.

Power=work/time=torque/time. That 5252 is in the forumula to make the units work out right: Power is measured in horsepower, Torque in ft*lb, reciprocal time in RPM. In Europe, where they measure Torque in Newton-Meters and Horsepower in Kilowatts, that number will be different. but the principle is the same.

So torque is more or less the force your car applies to the ground to impart motion; power indicates the rate at which your car performs some task.

That's my shot; InstallShield2 could probably give a beautifully elegant explanation, you may want to post the question in the 2.0 tuning subforum.

First things first... get her running. Once I've got that done and got all the lead out of my right foot (might take a while!), I'll give her a proper bath.

Just polished off the first ful tank of gas since switching from BKR5E-11s to ZFR5F-11s. Keeping octane at 87, mileage went from 24mpg to 26! :)

Filled up with 89 this time to see if there's any difference on the next tank. Maybe my ECU will advance the timing a little.
