what carbon fiber parts would you want for the MSP?

well i just ordered everything i need to start making some molds, parts, and hopefully everything in between. it cost me way, way more than i wanted to spend... so long christmas monies!

unfortunately i havent even gotten started on the molds but there was nowhere within a 20 mile radius that carried the wax i need for the original parts. thatll be in the shipment, which hopefully will arrive early next week.

carbon fiber is in, parts are waxed, and ive been playing around with the resin systems and making progress on some of the molds.

heres a teaser: one of a pair of production quality molds finished yesterday, its in its final stages of curing after drying out for 12 hours.

and if you look at the pic you might figure out what the GI thread will be for when i get one finished in a few days...

yeah i lied about doing the discussed part first. i wanted to since it was probably the simplest, but i would have been pissed as hell if it all stuck together and broke.
so i went with something a little sturdier, a little less popular, and a little less expensive so if it didnt work out i could throw it in the trash and not lose sleep over it.

i feel so out in the dark here... what is that pic of exactly?? and what is this dicussed part (if not the same thing as the pic)

looks just like the tweeter cover. if im right do I get a free set? j/k
there is no prize but you are correct.

however there will probably be one or two reduced cost pieces (or sets, for things sold in pairs) released for each part i make... the first parts popped out of the mold will probably be sold for about half price, since they will be used to point out issues in the mold and will probably have a few blemishes that can be sanded out. then ill be looking for a guinea pig to test out a lot of the new parts... for probably about a 20% discount.

sign up now... first parts are going to be rearview mirror cover, eyebrows (already have a guinea pig) and sail panels.

I want the rear view mirror cover and blemishes will not be a big deal since I will want to paint over part of it. Let me know for sure.

rearview covers are spoken for, as well as one of the sets of eyebrows.
still 2 sets of sail panels and a set of eyebrows available.

thanks haha... only wish your rings were going so well. like i said to wagonbacker though - i own everything to work on this whenever i want, but dont own the $80,000 lathe to work on the rings so its a little more complicated.

interested in the mirror cover as well. (production quality at full price is fine with me) lol

still need to get me a gauge surround too. BAH!

remember, i do intend to do a dual surround in CF, aiming for work to start in late feb on that.

and on a side note with the dual surround - i think these would so crazy badass that im considering a numbered, limited run. right now i'm thinking 15 or 20 at most... i guess i want them to be extremely rare even on some show quality cars. youll pay to get in the club but youll know its something youd see only on one in 200 MSPs.
And front fenders if we ever drum up enough interest.
ive been going back and forth on this, find 5 people and we'll talk. hell if you want i would think about a 1-off for you for the right price. i know you want em...

please try not to take this the wrong way... but I think you coming out with a product that complex, that looks half way decent, is going to be nearly impossible. I will be HAPPY to stick my foot in my mouth if/when you prove me wrong....

oh ill prove you wrong alright. im refraining from name calling but i think your new name (or whatever) says it all haha

ill break it down. its not going to be something i tackle right away, but lets look at the facts. DGM makes a surround in CF, almost certainly the same way i plan to. they may own the equipment to do CF in more complicated ways, but i am highly doubtful they use it on their interior stuff.
sure theyve got much more experience than me, but that comes in time and they started somewhere too. and when its all said and done, adding the extra material and two cutouts for the gauges wont take it from "something thats been done" to "impossible"... at least i dont think so.

the complexity that those 2 cutouts adds is pretty significant... Looking at what has to be done to keep the weave at all consistent through such a complex compound curve (redundancy intended there) is going to be difficult. plus cutting carbon fiber when cured SUCKS... and getting all of it clean is going to be even worse.

I really look forward to being proven wrong and wish you the best of luck.
