what carbon fiber parts would you want for the MSP?

right now im a little confused about the exact area youre referring to, but im sure ill find out exactly when i get to the part.

take a look at pics of the ones being made... the area where the gauge is added is is about 5 different compound curves all within a few square inches.. molding it is going to be a real b****.

there are designs out there other than his... all are about equally complex.. any simplification you could do would result in blocking a lot of the gauge cluster I think, but, regardless I am curious to see what you come out with.

just trying to help you not waste a ton of time and money to come out with crap... not trying to bag on you at all, but theres a reason the hand made part is so damn expensive, and the injection molded GB attempt failed. cost/benefit just isn't there... really though, I'd LOVE to be wrong.

yup im gonna work on them eventually. since its a cover its a much more intensive process, like the rearview cover, so i either have to drive around without my bezel for a week or wait for one to come up in the FS section. i know theres one or two that have been around lately but i only have so much money to deadstock the parts im molding.

OP updated. progress has been going well except for a hiccup in one of the eyelid molds.
a fiberglass mirror cover was made for shape and looks good. the exterior surface needs a thin layer of resin and some serious sanding before more work can be done on it and a mold can be created.
molds for the eyelids were made and look pretty good except for an area less than a square inch on the end of one. im hoping some fill with resin and a good sanding will work it out, if not i have to pitch the mold and try again.
and a CF sheet was made to be cut up for small flat things i might need, like mounting brackets for the sail panels. looks good, few bubbles and surface defects but not bad.

im taking a day or two off since i forgot to put a work sweater on while i was trimming up some of the molds. ive got fiberglass splinters running up and down my arms and my skin feels like its on fire. school is starting too, so... yeah. im hoping to take the time to maybe work on sanding a little and try to fix some issues in the equipment i need for making the CF parts.

OP update in progress.
stuff thats happened:
i attempted to do a quick 1-layer set of CF eyelids, but after 14 hours of curing @60*F they still werent hard enough to pull from the mold, which is pretty strange. similar conditions on the CF sheet i made were fine, this just didnt work for some reason. they came out like crap and will probably get tossed.

ive decided im going to wet sand all my molds down to 2000 grit and rubbing compound to make sure theyre extra smooth. the prototype mirror cover is sanded, trimmed, waxed, and ready to be molded, but using fiberglass mat is on hold at the moment since my cat might have ate some, but in any case he was pretty sick.

eyelid molds are fully sanded and trimmed, i just have to decide what im doing with the CF since i was not happy with how the testers went.

sail panels are on the back burner - i cant imagine theres more people interested in those than the mirror cover or eyelids, so...

and "someone" purchased a fiberglass spoiler lip off ebay and is shipping it here, so molding will get started on that sooner than i thought! some good news for yous guys.

if you're gonna toss em, I'll pay you to ship em to me instead. take a look over the work and see if I have any ideas on how to make it work better by lookin at the product. Also if you're getting close to having some products ready you might want to get on AMM status, as it take a lil while.

I'll also see if I can put some work into salvaging them... but regardless, some pics of how its goin would be awesome.

i can ship them to you but its going to be an uphill battle to produce anything useful. there was not enough resin flow in several spots and theres pretty large gaps. theyre still not dry enough to be trimmed and they definitely should not have been pulled from the mold.
i think theres a lot of issues with the system im running right now. im already planning on how to mitigate them, and will send you a PM later tonight about shipping what i have to you, and some of the solutions i have planned.

[edit: and im planning on applying for AMM tomorrow]

If you don't feel your work is worth posting here yet, I'd at least like to see a couple pics and see if I can have any useful input. It sounds like you know what you need to do to get to a point that your products will be worthy of selling, you might want to seriously consider some type of vac bag (even a half-assed home-grown version) process as it will help impregnate. If I had the space and time I would consider doing something with this kind of process myself, but since I don't I'm more than happy to assist however I can.

ive got a full-assed cheapo vac bagging system. legit ones, even so called "budget systems" are crazy expensive. PM on the way shortly.
[edit: and i didnt see in your PM - do you still want me to ship them to you even if theyre in bad shape?]

A carbon fiber heat shield for the turbo manifold would be great. Not totally sure how you'd do it to prevent browning and what not....but if you pulled it off I'd be the first to buy.
