wash/wax kits

cobra microfibers are pretty good, although some people say that they lose their plushness and paint safety after a couple of washes. definelty do some reading on the detailing forums and whatnot before making your purchase.

some other websites to check out is detailersdomain.com, pakshak.com, and chemicalguys.com

a couple pictures that show proof on how well it works. Car was officially five years old in February and still shines like new. pictures taken just this afternoon.

As far as more economical options, Amazon.com has a Meguiar's NXT Wash & Wax Kit that includes:

NXT Tech Wax 2.0 (Liquid)
NXT Car Wash
Insane Shine Tire Dressing
Utltimate Quick Detail
Microfiber Towel
Foam Sponge Applicator

All for $28.45 shipped to your door.

Having personally used the NXT 2.0 wax (paste) and the UQD just yesterday, as well as the car wash, the stuff is absolutely excellent. And a great bargain too. I have not used the tire dressing though. Otherwise, I would echo the sentiments on the Zaino.

I'm a bit of a detail freak and have tried just about everything. I agree that you can't go wrong with Meguiars, even though there are products with superior performance. I'm a great believer in Consumer Reports. They do very sophisticated tests on all products. In July 2006 they tested car waxes. Their top rated product was Black Magic Wet Shine liquid. I've used most of the products they tested in this report and the Black Magic was best. It's a bit more difficult to remove but leaves a superior shine and seems to last longer than any Griots or Meguiars products I've used.

Give it a try - when removing it, do a quick wipe over first, then go back with a microfiber cloth to remove - I've found that works best

that's a great suggestion.

I usually have a couple clothes used for the quick wipe down that removes most of the wax residue, then another couple for the final wipe downs. If you are running the wax so thick that it creates a blob on the cloth, thats simply a waste of your time (in removal) and wax. I wax my car with a couple of nice thin coats before I remove it. Removing wax; you do not have to complete in a circular motion.

your wasting wax....the only layer tahts adhering to the surface is that initial first layer.

unless im misunderstanding you. you dont remove anything until the final layer?
those other coats of wax arent adhering to the paint surface, they are adhering to that initial layer, and it all gets wiped off when you buff it off...

What do you guys use to wash/wax your cars? I was looking in the Detailing section and there were quite a few sites for products. What do you guys recommend? I don't have anything at the moment, so would it be best to just start off with purchasing a kit? Thanks in advance!

What is your goal for you car? Show quality, daily driver cleanup, high level enthusiast, etc...? That would give me a better idea of what to recommend. I don't want to recommend a high end wax for some one that just wants to keep it clean and nice looking. And I sure wouldn't recommend cheap mothers or meg's products to someone looking for concours type results.

Also, search around the detailing section a bit more. There are threads that have answers to your questions.

+1. most people go with synthetics because they're easier but they don't last as long as carnubas in most cases. try some nice nxt or mothers reflections and call it a day. :)

you should also get foam applicators and a polishing cloth. autozone usually carries mothers foam apps and polishing cloths. have fun, it's gonna take a while.

i still haven't waxed my car yet. :(

When it comes to carnauba vs. synthetic I am usually on the side of carnauba. But when it comes to lasting power carnauba isn't the best. Now there are some high quality carnaubas that I have that do last great and I am always ready to debate the greatness of carnauba, but by and large good synthetics last longer than carnauba.

megs 21 outlasts any OTC wax ive ever used so... yeah +1

i haven't found anything OTC that lasted longer than a month, that wasn't easy to use or stained trim.

AS for #21, not my fav. Doesn't have as much durability as a syn should. I have gotten similar durability out of some carnaubas.

i guess it depends on climate, because i layered 21 on my friends altima, and it still beaded pretty damn well 2 and half months later.

im making the move to opti seal however tho. ive read very good things about this product.

edit: the layering was this

1st layer of 21 was cured 12 hours before removal, and the second was cured for 6 hours.

i topped it with gold class just for looks, but thats irrelevant now.

Can't go wrong with opti-seal. Love that stuff.

When you say cured for 12 hours before removal what do you mean? You put the wax on and let it sit for 12 hours before buffing off?

Ok either someone has given you misinformation about "wax cure time" or you have misconstrued it. There is no need or benefit to leaving the product on for 12 hours. In fact many products say to not allow the product to dry before removing. Wax curing occurs after you have applied and buffed the product off. Then allow is to cure/dry for a day or so and then apply and buff another layer. Really you are just making more work for yourself by letting the product harden.

Cure time is very debated about how long is really needed, but apart from that leaving the product on is not part of that process. Don't make it harder on youself than it needs to be...especially when there is no benefit. ;)

i guess i was misinformed then

i use an extremely thin layer applied by a CCS grey pad.

it removed just as easy, and didnt ahve to struggle with it at all.

i was under the impression curing was done when the product is left on the surface along it to cure on the paint...

Nope. Sorry about that man. Well, now your life will be easier. :)

You have it right about the thin part. Thin is all that is needed since the rest is being buffed off. But the curing process happens after the product is buffed off.

yeah i just read through some threads on autopia on it.

oh well no harm no foul.

ive been doing things right for just around a year now. last year i was apply carnuba paste wax super thick to the point where i need several terry cloths (MF only now =) ) to remove it.

so yeah lol ive learned quite alot in the last year
