Unidentifiable rattle

I am experiencing a rattle when taking off from a standstill in first gear. It seems the rattle is coming from the left side of the engine and I can feel it through the clutch pedal. It only happens from a stop. If the car is moving just a little it never happens. Once the car is moving I don't hear it anymore. I never hear it in any other gear or any other time. A little while ago I installed an intake but I know for a fact the intake is not rubbing against anything.

Has anyone experianced this? For the life of me I cannot figure out where this is coming from. Anybody have any thoughts on this?

Sound like your Clutch Assembley....

You've got the exact same things that i had with my ride....cold mornings first gear was a nightmare...and anytime i'm at a stand still i would question if the car was going to launch smooth or not!

I say prepare to take your car in for a couple of day to the dealer ship

Day 1: (drop it off the night before) they need to assess the problem
Day2: Order you in a new Clutch kit
Day3: Get it put in and drive away with a tottally different feeling car

I'm almost 100% sure is that!

Thanks for the reply guys. I have read up on the clutch chatter but wasn't sure if it is the same problem. Does it make sense that I am hearing the rattle come from the left side of the engine compartment? Also the problem doesn't go away when it warms up. I could be driving for an hour but when I take off in first, after being stopped at a light, I will here the rattle.

The clutch chatter is definitely not a rattle problem. Unless you consider rattling your teeth out...

I suggest taking it to the dealership. It's hard to diagnose something like that.

LOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!....dude I'm about 99.9% sure I have your fix...."BUT" under these conditions:

1. If you installed an Injen intake??
2. If you mounted the sensor off of the OEM intake that is near the throttle body to the top of the engine block as Injen recommends??

ANSWER: if yes to both, here is the problem, because I had the same damn thing happen to me...then I found the answer!!!

What is happening is the motor vibration is vibrating that re-located sensor against your Strut Tower Bar.....that sounds "exactly" what mine was doing. Take your finger and rub on the backside of your bar and feel for scratches. I bet you have them, If you mounted the sensor there!!

SOLUTION: Move the sensor either back further in the other provided hole or to another safe location.

I hope all your crtieria fits mine, because it drove me crazy until I discovered the real problem. I was ready to take it back to the dealer thinking I too had a motor/tranny problem,,,,man, would I have felt so STUPID!!!!

GOOD LUCK!!

No thats not the problem. That sensor, or whatever it is, is nowhere near my strut bar. I thought about that the first time I started hearing the rattle.

Damn!!...I was sure that was the problem.....HMMM,....well, check all vibrations from re-locating OEM parts anyway....sorry, I couldn't help!!..I was sure that was it..just to coincidental...but not the answer uhh??....anyway good luck!!

make sure your intake isn't rubbing on your master cylinder. That happened to me.

I have the same problem as you. I am 100% sure it is the air intake I installed but for the life of me cant find where it is coming from. the rattle started immidiatly after my intake went on and I can feel it in the clutch pedal as well. I just dont have a fix for it yet.

Yeah its really weird! I kept thinking it was my intake as well. But if I physically try to move my intake as much as I can by hand and it doesn't rub or hit against anything.

Just had a thought. I attached my mount for the intake to the place where the original intake was connected to the battery harness. That peice is plastic. I wonder if it is possible that is what is rattling. Maybe it hits against the battery or something else.

I am about to give up and take it to the dealer. I just don't want to bring it in to have them tell me I screwed up with the intake install and have them charge me.
I am almost willing to stake my life that its not the intake.

I am in the same boat. I really dont think it is the clutch. I have to have my third gear and synch replaced so I am going to have them look at the clutch any way. as far as the intake goes, I am getting really frustratted with it. I am thinking it is hitting the battery when I take off in 1st because the engine would move in the mounts, even though it is hard to move the intake by hand you have to take into account the torque moving the engine. I am going to support the intake with some styrofoam and see if it cures the problem. if it does I will relocate the parts that are neccessary.

Well I finally figured out the rattle. And I must say I feel like an idiot now. When I first started getting the rattle was about a week or so after I installed my intake. I made sure my intake wasn't hitting or rubbing anything. Trying to move the intake by hand I could never get it to touch the brake cylinder. Also I inspected the intake while the car was running and revving but still it never got near the cylinder. There is a nice little gap between the two. I started getting really tired of finding where the rattle is coming from so decided, for the hell of it, to stuff styrofoam held by duct tape in between the intake and brake cylinder. This solved the rattle. It seems when launching in first gear the engine must move a good distance and made the intake hit the cylinder. I did notice some scratching on the intake but thought this was when I first did the installation when it was actually touching. I guess I should have tried this out sooner but I could of swore there was noway they were hitting each other.

It's funny how you should mention this rattle. I"ve already had my clutch/flywheel replaced for the cold morning clutch chatter, and only in the last 2 weeks i've started experiencing this problem. I've had my Ractive intake (installed by dealer) for at least 5 months now and my new clutch for about a month. I really don't think it's the intake since it never happened before. Why would replacing the clutch make the intake hit anything. Now whenever i'm taking off from a stop on 1st and sometimes on 2nd if it's a hill, i'll hear a rumbling vibrating sound and feel it on my clutch and it's definately coming from the left side. Any ideas? I"ve made an appointment next Monday to have the dealer look at it.

Look at my post just before yours. I would do like I did and put something between the brake cylinder and intake just to see if thats the problem. It only takes a couple minutes.
