Tri Point Turbo

I was wondering if anyone has installed the tripoint turbo on their MP3's? And do you think that the tripoint kit is a good one to go with or should I wait for the M2? thanks

I would say either go with BEGI or you can try the TriPoint. I feel bad for TriPoint. So many people showed interest and nobody I know of has bought their kit. Everyone says its because of the Aerodyne turbo used (reliability issues). A google groups search on these things seems to reveal reliability issues in the early 90s, but very few complaints lately... Maybe you can be the "first"?

Chris

I was thinking about going with there turbo but then M2 is just as far and I might as well do M2 since M2's is a more complete package and their kit produces more horsepower. Does Aerodyne even make that good of turbos. I'm kinda newI've never heard of them I've heard of all the other big companys though.

If you wanna do it yourself, tripoint would be a good easy way to go.

BEGI is kind of getting screwed, too. They still haven't sold the first ten kits they made I don't think...

All the kits available are complete. BEGI makes a good kit, so does Tripoint.

I don't know about the Aerodyne turbos, but if they have had reliability issues in the past, I can see why they would still have a bad name. Its easy to get a bad name, and hard to erase it.:(

Look at Hyundai...Ever since they stopped using Mitsubishi parts in their cars, the reliability has gone up. Relatively of course, and that is comapring old Hyundais to the new ones.

i would love to buy a turbo for my car. but i dont have the money and i have a warranty i cant get rid of.

I thought they haven't finished the MP3 kit yet. Didn't he realize at the end that the MP3 had advanced timing and had to put more R&D into it? My goal is to save now and get one when my warranty is out.

Chris

The BEGI kit is done and they have sold at least one. PortcityMP3, from Wilmington, NC bought one. I know this because I took my MP3 to the dealer Monday to get a wheel bearing fixed and the service manager said that the guy is taking his car there tomorrow (Thurs) to get the kit put on.

It is strange that the guy hasn't said anything on here about it. He must want to surprise us.

Hasn't said anything??

Actually I've talked about it numerous times...well about 8 post...thats alot from me..and yes it will be the first BEGI kit on an MP3. I got it all Tuesday ...and first impressions were mixed... the manifold is kinda well.... Its cast Iron of course and it will last forever but I kinda wish I would have went with spoolins tubular. maybe down the road...but all in all I couldn't be happier w/ the full kit at a great price....his Instructions are very through and full detailed pics...the info book is 28 pages thick! I sure hope the guys can get it put in for me tomorrow.. Hey nc I saw your ride up there and Your rims are NICE!! and that hood is damn light!!! you got the z828 you ass!! jk I got he z919. that exhaust note DAMN! I bet your boyz here you coming home from college road!! Its just not my bag but I like the total package and damn those rims! maybe i see you up there tomorrow.

hmmm 2 turboed mp3's in the wilmington area, mmmmmm.....(wiggle) NC you'll have to get your car tuned so we dont run all over you :) heh just kidding bro.

If I'm thinking correctly, the BEGI kit is actually the same one that Bell Engineering has produced. Which means if I'm thinking correctly, WShade already has this kit on his P5. BEGI is an abbreviation for Bell Engineering or Experimental Group Inc. Here's the website link

Yes, you are correct. Corky Bell is the man behind the that company.

yes BEGI stands for Bell Engineering Group Inc.

Yeah, the exhaust is loud. I didn't want it that loud hehe. How much did you pay for the kit? I am going to start working on my turbo very soon. Will probably go with spoolin manifold and a Killer 16G. I can't make it up to the dealership until tomorrow or Sat :( Hope it turns out good for you.

PortCity,
Why are you having the dealer put it on? Are they going to do some kind of warranty thing? Just curious. I kind of think if the instructions are thorough enough, might as well do it yourself and learn something in the process! I think the only thing that would worry me about installing a turbo would be the drilling into the oil pan.

I was going to get the tripoint but not any more the AERODYNE turbos a piece of s***. I went by the performance shop today and they have a 600hp + NSX and they've gone threw 10 sets of turbos. The nsx is twin turbo. Finally they put on garrettes he said what ever you do dont buy a aerodyne they blow up after 100 miles.

scuse me if i'm a little sceptical about the last comment. aerodyne turbos can't be that unreliable - maybe early on but now?
how many of those racing pros i've read about are using the tripoint system? most if not all of them if i remember correctly. i bet you they don't rebuild the turbo after every 100k of testing or racing.

hell, if anyone has read corky's book maximum boost, his project car was a nsx which he used two aerodyne turbos. so obviously he thinks they are pretty cool.

i believe they are very expensive tho which could be one of the main reasons that the begi kit doesn't use one. they also tend to be a bit small - i don't think they make one that'll economically flow as much as a 18psi t3 in 60trim but i could be wrong. ;)

PhyschoMP3 - i guarantee that performace shop is completely over-spooling those turbos. i mean seriously - do you or does anyone else believe that a company could actually sell a product that failed at that rate?
i don't.

personally i believe it would be a lot better business for a performance shop to say the equipment was crap than to admit they either don't know what they're doing (ie choosing the wrong type of turbo for their application in the first place) or they just don't care. don't believe everything you hear from people who should know better.

Good points. Plus if CORKY says they're good....they must be.

Another big advantage is that they are SUPER easy to install.
