Transmission Problem

:
Mazda P5
Is it my clutch or transmission going out?
It constantly grinds going into second and continuously pops out of third. It gets stuck in reverse and doesn't want to pop out but no issues putting it into first fourth or fifth.
It's irritating, but I don't want to go through the trouble of replacing the clutch if the transmission is the issue. Don't want to have to take it off twice.
Thanks in advance, this is my first mazda always had a Honda so I know the trannys are very different .

Does it go into first and reverse while stopped fine? If so, there's nothing wrong with the clutch.

You symptoms sound like a transmission problem.

So is this going to be a regular thing with mazda? This is why I didn't get a mitsubishi because of bad trannys.
I don't want to have to keep replacing the transmission every 150k miles. I'll just go back to honda.

My trans has 180k and shifts fine.

Their lifespan largely depends on how it was shifted by previous owners. Sounds like yours may not have been treated nicely. Second and third are the most common gears to have synchronizer problems on, which is the source of your problem.

You did good avoiding Mitsubishi. They have a lot more problems than transmissions.

You could try using synchro-mesh oil in you tranny...

It may help and is cheaper than a new transmission.

I too thought my tranny was on its way out, but after swapping to synchromesh and changing my motor mounts, all my problems disappeared. It wasn't popping out though. I just couldn't get into first or reverse easily and had to double clutch everything when cold.

I'll try the synchro oil and see if that'll hold me over til I feel like replacing the tranny. I have a ruckus build I'm working on so all my time and money are being dumped into that. Nice gy6 swap. Almost complete and about $1800 later.
