Tire Suggestions

Hi,

I have an 06 Mazda 3 with 17" goodyear tires on it. I live in Canada and need to get a good tire that isn't as slippery as the factory ones (I slide on ice and snow pretty bad) and I am wondering what type of tires people are using or can suggest that would be a good replacement.

you want a winter tire and a summer tire or just one set for all year? where in canada?

I wouldn't mind just having a single all season tire but the tires on it now I am sure are fine as a summer tire so suggestions on winter tires or all season tires would be good so I can look at costs and decide which has the lower PITA factor.

I live in Calgary Alberta so we get winter and summer one day after another during the winter months

Actually, the tires that are on it suck in the summer, too.

If you look around in the Tire forum (where I have moved this thread), there are at least a half dozen discussions going on about this very subject.

Whatever you do dont get the bridgestone potenzas, their really nice summer tired but SUCK in the snow. The falken ziex 512s that i have arent TOO bad.

Thanks for moving the thread I was in a rush and partially dumb and was just in the welcome lounge I totally forgot to move up one level before posting. As for the suggestions in the other threads I am getting a quote for Kumho KU21 ECSTA ASX KU21-7418.
They seem to look like a good choice but I will see how the quote comes back as to whether I change them out right away or wait til October when winter starts again.

just get some old protege wheels and slap some winter rubber on em then keep your stockers with some nice (insert summer tire of choice here) on them

I decided I'd had enough of the crappy handling on wet, even just cold, pavement, and especially in snow, and decided my life and my car were worth popping the cash to protect despite having only 11,000 miles on those POS Goodyears the M3s come with.

I put Avon Tech M550 A/S tires on it about a month ago. I didn't get to experience much accumulating snow since then but have noticed a BIG improvment in handling on slushy and wet pavement.

My spouse is a big Michelin fan so I strongly considered the Pilot Sport A/S but eventually went for the more cost effective Avons. (Got 4 for the price of 3 Michelins.)

I bought them through Tire Rack, had them shipped to one of their preferred providers, and had them on the car less than 24 hours after ordering.

You also might enjoy reading all the really bad reviews of the stock Goodyear Eagle RSAs on the Tire Rack website. It's shocking that Goodyear can continue selling a tire that has such poor levels of customer satisfaction. I guess they are just resting on the laurels of name recognition and most people (like myself until this experience) just assume that Goodyear tires are going to be at least safe and adequate. I'll never make that mistake again. And I'll probably never buy a Goodyear product again either.

I run the Pilot A/S's on my 5 and 3. They're expensive but they are great!

I've also got the Falken zx 512's on my MSP. They're all season performance tires that actually do half way decent in the snow. I got them for about 80 bucks a pop from tires.com and free shipping. They're not as grippy on the dry as the OEM potenza's that came with the car, but they're just about as good through the turns. It was like night and day when I replaced the OEM tires with these in the snow. They hold up very well and you won't be disappointed with them especailly for the price.

went PSI are you running on the stock tires (RS-As)...
I'm in toronto right now. I'm running 32 PSI (factory spec) on cold tires.
Its been alot better when the weather is above 2 degrees.
(in dry I find it amazing). its a complete POS in snow though.

If you have 16'' rims, u should look into Fuzion ZRi. 17'' I have no clue sorry.

I'm running them with the 32 PSI as well and yes on the dry roads they are pretty good but with Calgary we still keep gettiung snow and it turns to ice very quickly with the melt and freeze going on so I need something a heck of a lot better for those conditions and yes I have the 17" rims. The Kuhmo's are reasonable priced (900 Canadian, installed and full warranty including road hazard and tire rotation) so I think I will go ahead and throw them on this week sometime if possible.

Well I got my new Kumho KU21 ASX tires today. They were pretty good driving around today but this weekend should be a good test as we are supposed to get some rain (and possibly drop below freezing). Now I just have to sell my barely used RSA's.

I think I will take some pictures this weekend and post them for sale on here (possibly on ebay as well).
